Shawn Layden (President SCEA) wearing Crash Bandicoot t-shirt at PSX...

Whether or not this was intentional, it must be slightly annoying to be working in a high-up position and you have to watch your wardrobe because rabid fanboys will take it as a sign of a returning franchise if you wear the wrong shirt.

Why is everyone so obsessed with Crash? Cartoon characters don't sell these days, any new Crash games would be dead on arrival.

Cartoon characters don't get used outside of Mario, DK, Kirby, Yoshi and Splatoon these days. Mario (3DW, NSMBU, Maker), DK (TF), Kirby (Triple Trouble), Yoshi (New Island) and Splatoon all recently had million selling games...

If Sony releases a new Crash Bandicoot and Microsoft continues refusing to make a new Banjo, only delivering a f***ing MMO game instead, I'll be mad to ever have bought an Xbox One. Though of course, a PS4 is an inevitable purchase should a new (good, platformer) Crash Bandicoot be announced as a PS4 exclusive. Would actually be glad to buy one for that.

You know, going to a presentation wearing a shirt of a franchise you own or is very closely connected to your system is basically the only thing you'd have to have a watch on. Layden knew what he was doing when he dressed in a Crash shirt.

Why would anyone even want Crash back? It was an linear experimental 3D platformer game. For its time it was great, but I think Naughty Dog would be better off making a new IP. I don't think anyone could argue that we need more 3D (not pseudo 3D) platformers in this industry. He also is wearing an old PS1 Crash Bandicoot shirt sooooo

Cause Crash games are still great, PS4 has very limited amount of platformers and probably wouldn't have anything to do with ND.

Also the biggest reason of course is that Crash is a fan favourite. Easily up there with FF7 and MGS when it comes to PS1 nostalgia in peoples minds.

Who would even be making this game?

A number of teams:
-Sanzaru Games - If they are not making a Sly game to tie into the upcoming film, then the upcoming Crash game will likely be made by them with supervision from Naughty Dog
-Big Red Button - Before you start throwing garbage at me, hear me out. Sonic Boom Wii U suffered from troubled developed (down porting a game with little time, not knowing how to make a proper Sonic game, the title being targeted at younger audiences, ect). They are filled with ex-Naughty Dog and Insomniac people, so they are a good fit for Crash if they were the ones to make it
-Insomniac Games - They finished Sunset Overdrive a year ago and while a good deal of NC studio is making Ratchet & Clank, a their other studios are working on things. So, they could be the ones making a new Crash game. They worked right next to Naughty Dog in the same building during the PS1 days and have a great relationship with Naughty Dog; wouldn't be surprised if they picked them to make the Crash game, a studio they have history with and have high respect for
-Sucker Punch - They worked on platformers in the past (Rocket Robot on Wheels, the Sly Cooper Trilogy) and it could be argued that the Infamous series is an natural progression from the Sly series due to the focus on navigation and exploration. They could be the ones making a Crash game, as Sony trusts them and Second Son was a success on PS4. They are in good shape, so Crash being a project of their wouldn't be a massive surprise to me.

The counter-argument here would be that those are all Nintendo IPs and that Nintendo's fanbase is more receptive to the Saturday Morning Cartoon aesthetic than Sony's or Microsoft's.

Do I believe that counter-argument? I don't know. In Sony's case, they probably have enough of a console base out there with PS4 that a new Crash game, well-made and well-marketed, can top a million units sold.

What were LBP's numbers on PS3 and PS4 as a point of comparison? Does anyone know?

Obviously Naughty Dog is well familiar with open-world 360degree 3D platformers as well thanks to the Jak & Daxter trilogy.

I would think that a modern Crash Bandicoot would mix it up plenty across its campaign (as the originals did really: mostly into the screen, racing segments, vertical, sidescrolling) with probably a 360degree open world core.

One thing that makes Crash stand out from typical 3D platformers is that it is actually a bit more witty for grown ups. It has a slight edge to its humor that you don't really have in other big platformers.

Because I like platformers and I don't like hollywood games, so naturally, I want Crash back over any new hollywood game Naughty Dog might make. I like collectathons more than the Crash formula, but that's why I'm clamoring for Banjo even more than Crash. Nevertheless, as I said, Crash certainly is a system seller for me.

That's optimistic.

Activision will have the THPS5 team working on it as their next project.

I'm not sure I'd even want them to go back to Crash, its just...where do you take it? Its been so long and games have changed.

Keep doing what you're doing Naughty Dog

Maybe they could give Travelers Tales a break from the constant Lego games and let them make a proper sequel to Twinsanity that isnt rushed?

Or maybe a Crash Team Racing remake with online would be acceptable too.

Even if it doesn't mean anything I still don't understand why they couldn't buy the rights from Activision. I mean cmon, they have no plans on using Crash in any way shape or form so fucking sell that shit to Sony.

I was at work but had a break and during that I watched some of this, saw him in that shirt and was like "WAIT DID I JUST MISS CRASH BEING ANNOUNCED?!?!!" and then found out that no I didn't....*sigh* I miss Crash.

What if a guy like Neil Druckmann were a big Crash fan. Can he just never wear a Crash shirt in public for fear of fanboys taking it as a sign of ND's return to crash?

Yes, Nintendo is third because they still make platformers
Not to mention platformers like NSMBU and Mario 3DWorld still sold well above 4 million units each.

Given how huge the PS4 still is, it's the perfect time for Sony try and cash in on Nintendo's platformers being stuck on a niche console with the R&C remake and a Crash reboot.

That might just be a bad example, but I would say no. Druckmann has made it clear before that he doesn't want to make Crash games. Why would he hold that opinion if he was a big enough fan to wear the respective merchandise? Unless he's not permitted or otherwise incapable, wouldn't he jump at the chance to create one?

It'd be one thing for some random animator or tester to sport Crash, but not someone in charge of creative and/or business decisions.

higher-ups have to watch their wardrobe anyway

Obviously. I just was thinking it must be hellish having to watch your wardrobe because of fanboys interpreting everything as a tease.

I hope Shawn just starts wearing shirts of dead franchises people keep begging to be resurrected to tease them.

MediEvil would be a good choice in a meta kind of way.
Please bring back MediEvil

Well, with the Vib Ribbon shirt he did say that the huge fan reaction got them to work on the re-release. So maybe, just maybe, he wears these shirts to see the internet reaction to determine whether or not to pursue said games. So, for instance, we have a whole thread on the Crash shirt, maybe it is happening. If he one day wore an Order 1866 shirt no one would give a shit and we would continue to not get a sequel.
