NPD Sales Results for December 2015 [Up1: Super Mario Maker]

When I look at the top 10 games of the year, it makes me depressed. It looks like last year's and the year before. I didn't buy any of those games. It's all sequels, shooters, Minecraft, and reiterations of games that I have played before.

Where's the Witcher 3? Until Dawn? Return Of Tomb Raider? Bloodborne? Mario Maker? Splatoon? Metal Gear?

I would say this list is pointless like the game of the year lists but it is not. This is what is selling. It sends a clear message to game creators.

I dont get it either, or MS is basically lying saying that X1 is the ONLY console you can play those games on which is not true giving they all are available on PS4.

Minecraft and GTA didn't come out in 2015, so the MS statement excludes those titles and includes another 2 that came out in 2015, one of those which must be an XBO exclusive for them to be able to get away with that line.

“Thanks to our fans, continued support for the most critically-acclaimed holiday lineup of exclusives in Xbox history made December 2015 the best month yet for Xbox Live global engagement and Xbox One sales in the U.S. The total number of hours spent gaming on Xbox One worldwide nearly doubled compared to December 2014 and Xbox One exclusive game sales in the U.S. between July and December 2015 were up 61 percent compared to the same period in 2014. Revenue from Xbox Store’s Countdown, the biggest Xbox Store sale ever, broke records with 69 percent growth year-over-year when compared to results from last year’s sale. Xbox One is the best place for gamers and the only console that has all top 10 best-selling titles of this generation that launched in 2015

WTF, MS???

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
Wii buyers are buying tablets, Google cardboard, and the hot toy Johnny and Jane wants. They're not going to buy another console untill said console strikes gold with a gimmick that tickles their fancy.

The Wii wasn't bought because it was a gaming console. The Wii sold because it was a Christmas toy fad that snowballed. Think pogs, power Rangers, tickle me Elmo, or beanie babies.

And the original videogame, from Atari.

You forget that once families used to play the likes of Pong, and it was very much sort of a fad. There's nothing wrong with that, you just have to be consistent and be able to tickle their fancy like a serial killer.

If they're learned their lesson Next Xbox definitely will be at least equal of PS5 in specs, announced totally focused on games and will be launched at a compelling price.

Sony is better at putting hardware together, but let's just assume they are equal, why would people make the jump? Their first party are losing market share fast and Xbox is dead in Japan. I don't see them getting the same level of support they had for the 360 again.

I still cannot fathom how people are still buying Minecraft. It's like there is no ceiling. It just doesn't end

Guess who Shane Stocks is <-----

I've called out the spin on numerous circumstances, certainly on the current sales of Tomb Raider. It'll be interesting to know actual sales figures on the game (I want to franchise to survive).

Since your thread got closed: WTF is a categorical liar? And why do you even care? He's a PR person, it's his job to spin the truth. And 3.9 shipped is actually 3.9 sold. Just not sold through.

Evilr I appreciate you challenging people, but jeez you could be a bit nicer about it.

Nice to see the "Wii was a fad" rhetoric keeping up after all these years, lol.

It is, was, and forever will be, an outlier. Something that performed outside a statistical norm. It's math.

Well but those people get real jobs as politicians or spokespeople for politicians.

So that's how Trump's doing it.

Sure there were some people that wanted it and were disappointed perhaps it caused them some sales I didn't dispute that but even if they misinterpreted its importance, I personally didn't find it that much of an omission really and I know plenty of others that are the same.

There were a sizeable number of people who purchased the game that were pretty peeves about its exclusion. Couple this with the low numbers for this entry and it's easy to see how it might be a bigger deal to a lot more people than you seem I think it is. It might not bother you or a portion of the current game's player base all that much but considering the state that the game is in sales wise that doesn't really tell us much at all about what the wider audience things about its exclusion.

As I said about TO though, that campaign was all there was, no co-op, no multiplayer, you cant skip the cut-scenes (which annoyed people) among other faults, that impression of doing the same thing multiple times over is something that sticks much less in a longer game which also has multiplayer modes and offers you more. Perhaps people thought the recycled content was better in Halo?

Generally speaking Halo just had a lot more gameplay variety even with the Warden fights re-appearing, I would say.

That's fair. I just recently played through the campaign and I found the warden fights to be far more egregious personally. They are still fresh in my mind and it surprised me that they seemed like such a small complaint amongst the fanbase given my experience and the outrage I saw with the order for essentially the same issue. But you're right it is a smaller portion of the game as a while so that makes sense.

It doesn't change the fact that I found the campaign to be an absolute slog though. Or that the squads mate AI was incredibly frustrating and genuinely awful 90% of the time. Considering the degree to which the campaign was built around the idea of having a squad it really made it entirely I enjoyable to me and I doubt I'm the only one who feels that way.

I guess my point is that trying to pawn off the sales off Halo 5 as being strictly due to 4 and MCC is incredibly disingenuous when there are plenty of things Halo 5 drops the ball on. Not just in the campaign but the matchmaking issues for multiplayer in Oceania, South America and Japan are a serious problem. They basically make multiplayer unplayable for anyone with a moderately high rank in these regions thanks to wait times often exceeding 1 hour. Yet again we see very little mention of this anywhere.

TLDR: Halo 5 has plenty of issues that are likely to be just as much a factor in its current sales than past mistakes.

They are saying that there are some games that didn't come out in 2015

GTA
Minecraft
COD AW

Maybe more.

Now from MS's statement , this means that some other games quite high up the chart (but not in the top 10) were Xbox exclusive

Xbox One is the best place for gamers and the only console that has all top 10 best-selling titles of this generation that launched in 2015.

I guess it actually means and Xbox exclusive title that launched in 2015 (Halo 5?) had to be in the top 13 for the year. Those 3 listed above are the 2014 titles.

That is some impressive spin, truly.

I do not want MS to release early again.

In the newest Pachter Factor episode that's available on Youtube, and seems to be before than start of 2016, he is asked the question if this gen will last as long as the 360 / PS3 gen of 7-8 years, and relating to 4K TVs

https://youtu.be/ck897uny1Ow?t=5m46s

Nevermind the stuff about 4K TV prices and uptake, Pachter says he would be surprised if there's a next generation console in 2018, but there might be in 2019, and there will be by 2020. He said this gen will be longer than 5 years, that 6 years is likely and thinks 7 years is "a lot".

360 was launched 1 year sooner and is basically equal to PS3, so Sony isn't that great.

If Sony play their cards right will be difficult to MS, but there's a lot variables. Microsoft will launch earlier, will have price advantage...? Is to soon to predict anything, in PS2 era we all thought that PS3 winning was a given.

Doesn't necessarily mean it's top 13. They're excluding all titles that didn't come out this year. 11, 12, 13 could be titles that came out last year as well. They might not have. Hard to tell at this point.

Same thing happened when Sony took a picture of Forza Motorsport and pretended it was the new GT. They have PR companies for that kind of stuff and both screw up. Websites, blogs and twitter accounts are all outsourced.

Why would the top 10 for the year depress you? A healthy software market drives console sales, expanding the market for more niche titles.

All the games you listed were made, and released to critical and (Tomb Raider aside) commercial success. None of them would ever challenge GTAa or CODs for sales, but Bloodborne, Splatoon and Until Dawn would have been sales sucess stories in their own rights. Supermassive have said that Until Dawn sold way above expectations, and Splatoon and Bloodborne both sold well for new IPs.

Spencer at the helm, Nutella support, new Microsoft attitude, new Microsoft approach towards hardware, desperation to get back that market share, possibly launching one year earlier... should lead to great things for the next Xbox.

wait, this possibility of the next xbox launching one year earlier than competitor's is it based on anything (did i miss a rumor) or are you just saying it?

I wouldn't say they're basically equal. Perhaps they're within the same ball park as Ps4 and Xbone are, but I think it is safe to say Ps3 was more powerful than 360.

This is kinda big news, and encouraging for future development.

We acutally had publisher growth in the Physical space in 2015!

41 publishers put a game into the market in 2015! First time we've had growth there since 2009. That makes me happy.

Not all great news though. The overall number of unique titles released in 2015 fell again. We are now under 200 games released per year. That's a bit of a bummer.
