SEGA 3D Classics Collection hitting retail in North America (April 26th, $29.99)

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
So, out of curiosity, what's so special about Puyo Puyo 2 vs. the trillions of other games in the series? I've never been super deep into the series, so I have no idea.

My only repeat would be galaxy force, but I need Power drift and puyo puyo in my life, thunder blade is great too.

I have most of the ones in this particular volume on my Japanese 3DS, but my US 3DS is the more frequently used of the two, so at least that make repurchasing them more palatable. I'll get them on my main 3DS.

"most" had unrealistic expectations and/or don't know the quality of these works right here...their loss, they'll still be around when folks realize how great this is later

The disappointment was brought by the gaffers onto themselves ... expectations were insane, knowing the market - I am wondering if some people just woke up from the 90s after hibernation...

And you are spot on, the amount of work and quality on those games is beyond belief. Those are not emulated roms we are talking about.

Disappointing honestly to read all those things ... Sega is doomed with being a posthumous publisher.

Sounds like a great little compilation. I honestly don't understand the hate.

Also, why is Zangief driving a race car?

I'm not sure if it's any better than any later games specifically, but it IS a game I can play on my 3DS which is enough for me. The only other version is the GameGear Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine which apparently is based on PuyoPuyo 1 (which doesn't have as much mechanical depth). I just want more puzzle fighter games.

$45 CAD ;_______; that's not a "budget price" sega....

BUT!! That aside, I'm all over this. I was just thinking how I'd like to physically own some of these 3D Classics, so I can't wait. Even if this'll be the tenth time I own Sonic 1.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Why is everyone disappointed?

Does this include everything or just some of them? I was thinking to buy Archives 1+2 in Japan but this might be easier.

i am guessing they only have a playstation and doesn't have a 3DS

Good point, I guess it wouldn't seem compelling at a full retail price and they'd rather release two individual budget titles? It's hard to give away all those games at $30 when they come at $5.99 each on the eshop. I quite want this 1+2 compilation though.

It's a double-pack, not a compilation, and it still costs like 7000 yen or something so it's not like they slashed the price by much.

WOW!!! What a useful and insightful post!

Ditto for your equally useless retort. I hyped myself too high, and am expressing my dissapointment. I know the 3D classics are good, just was expecting something more interesting. I need to play the Sonic 2 at some point, but just am not playing my 3DS of late.

So what does Sega have for digital fans who actually supported the series from the start and own half or more of the titles in this collection?

Power Drift is significant because the only home versions released in the west (EU, NA) were shitty computer ports.

Atari ST - Commodore 64 - Amiga - MS DOS -
ZX Spectrum - MSX - Amstrad CPC

Japan got ports that ranged from decent to good to outstanding.

PC-Engine - Saturn (arcade quality but 30fps) - Dreamcast (60fps)

Not sure if they'll keep this bonus in the American release, but the Japanese cartridge unlocks the Master System version of Fantasy Zone if it detects 3D Fantasy Zone on your system.

I'm pretty sure the unlock is for owning the first compilation, not the individual version of 3DFZ.

Then express it in the announcement thread rather than the one for this game? 50% of this thread is people whining about something they've made up.

I saw nothing wrong with this announcement.
Ya me either. Its a pretty nice move from Segac West since this is the type of really niche product that bigger publishers have greatly shyed away from bringing to retail. I'd dare say this is the Atlus influence/lessons learned.

That's my question.... but honestly it seems like there's no positive answer. I'm really hesitant to buy this in the event that somehow they decide to do Power Drift seperately down the line.

I don't buy download games so its this or nothing for me. Plus I like ta show support for download games coming to retail if possible.

I prefer physical media too but quality content by good people like M2 should be supported no matter the platform. Anyone who has a 3DS and wants to send a clear message to Sega and M2 to keep restoring and preserving their legacy should either get this compilation or buy at least one 3D Classic title on the eShop which isn't covered by the compilation. Plus it also tells Sega loud and clear that these types of releases get money and a lot more respect when they don't go the lazy route by using Backbone or Digital Eclipse.

From a historical point of view, Tsu is the game that put the series on the map and had everyone in the 90s developing competitive puzzle games.

From a gameplay standpoint, it improves on the first Puyo (the one that became Mean Bean Machine/Kirby's Avalanche) without adding a whole bunch of gimmicks like many of the later entries would. The main new mechanic is the ability to remove garbage that is waiting above your field, which sounds minor but changes the gameplay flow quite a bit.

Thankfully, Digital Eclipse/Backbone Entertainment are dead (they're basically the same company).

Edit: I forgot that they're back under a different leader now.

Are people disappointed by this? I know from reading the 3D classics thread there was at least some demand for the physical release to come to the West.

Can't please everyone.

enigmatic_alex44

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
Really disappointing.

Seeing Sonic on the cover, I right away hoped 1, 2 and 3 would all be on there in gorgeous 3D (2 being one of my favorite games) but it's just Sonic 1? The worst Sonic?

I'll pass.

this is the 2nd collection that was released in japan. its not as good as the first one. more interested in the first one, or a combination of the two for a better value proposition.

Wow I just read the first page. Are you guys crazy? Why would you bitch at such an amazing collection of outstanding ports?

They saw a tweet Sega made yesterday, they hyped themselves up and got their expectations out of whack, which led to them being disappointed with what they got. Even if what they got is still pretty cool.

They're not. Digital Eclipse relaunched last year as a subset of Other Ocean and their first release was the Mega Man Legacy Collection for Capcom, which wasn't too bad.

Meh they should have their gamer card revoked

Really wonderful news! Support Sega and buy a copy if you're still missing a bunch of the titles from your digital collection! As was previously mentioned, these games are great ports!!!

With that said, I'll mention that I am also one of those that already own all of the games. I own a digital copy of all of them, plus own Archives 1 and 2 on separate 3DS physical SKUs.

When I was a kid, I got a 'Game Over' in Maze Hunter 3-D, literally on the last jump of the last level.

Shit fucked me up. Game was so hard I never again attempted completion.
