XCOM 2 |OT| Be Aggressive! Be Be Aggressive!

I've almost lost my game because I havn't done a blacksite mission yet :/

Guess I'll have to be faster in my next game.

My Avatar project meter is more than halfway so I thought I'd better try a blacksite mission but some damned mech showed up and kicked my ass. Maybe I need to turn the difficulty down or something (I have it on "Veteran" which it says is for people who played Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within).

Do we know how to modify the op names? Launching a VIP mission called 'Death God' or whatever seems a little tonally inappropriate for a last-gasp resistance force.

I'm about to call shennanigans on the lack of controller support.

This is the first time I've seen the Steam controller in the top ten sales on Steam since it's release.

There is obviously a huge demand by players for controller support in this game.

I'm putting on my tinfoil hat and I'm going to say that Valve may have moneyhatted Firaxis to not include it knowing they could sell a lot of Steam controllers and increase their usage base.

There's even a Steam controller/XCom 2 bundle.

I'm finding it really hard but enjoyable. I do reload when someone I don't want to die bites the dust but I'm leaving the games systems I don't want to be penalised for not know the distance of an enemies close range attack for instance. The game should give you more info on the enemy ranges.

They didn't have time to implement controller support, as they had to spend a good chunk of time really dialing in the performance.

Damn... I wish I knew about the bundle before hand.

Playing right into their hands!

Further to my point- the game's interface is almost exactly the same as EU which had fully integrated controller support.

This isn't an RTS or super complex strategy game like Europa Universalis which have extremely mouse-centered interfaces.

I'd almost go so far to say that there is a lot of legacy stuff in the interface that is hampered by it's controller-centric roots and would have been much better removed for a true mouse-centric UI.

Then again, maybe they just didn't have enough money to put it in.

So is anyone else having the game display "Obtaining world stats from the server, please wait"?

Been like this for a good 10 minutes now.

How to i choose from which direction I use the melee swords on enemies? As far as I can tell, the game just gives me a single choice. And I'm sure that can't be right, because that would be fucking dumb

Hover over the tile you want to end up in, and move the pointer towards the enemy until the attack arrow shows up.

Put your cursor on the enemy like you were moving on top of it. If the cursor changes to a sword, you will do a slash when doing that move. It's a bit finicky, but you can change the square the soldier will attack from.

Before this came out, I assumed that the removal of XInput controllers was because the UI had been heavily redesigned to favor mouse/keyboard. That's obviously not the case.

Now I'm stuck with a UI beholden to nonexistent controller input. The Steam Controller is a nice way to play from a couch or whatever but it feels like a band-aid. Ideally, we'd get a full UI redesign (Larian did this in reverse for Original Sin). If that's not going to happen, XInput support would be welcome.

Why isn't there a Star Wars RPG? And wouldn't James Bond make for a pretty good FPS?
How do I heal a soldier who is shocked/appaled/distressed/war torn (I play in german so don't know how it's exactly called in the english version)?

Take them on more missions and don't let them get their ass kicked.

They'll recover without being wounded on subsequent missions

You know, the weird thing is that my xbox 360 controller actually was making the camera move on the strategic layer when it was laying on the ground upside down. I've been going back and forth between M&K and my steam controller, anyway.

I like my way of selecting the tile then enemy over your way of selecting the enemy then tile, so we must now become bitter rivals, until we find out in the sequel that our methods are similar and become best friends, and then when one of us dies in the third movie, the other will have an emotional moment and go on to win the fight/prize/competition.

Anyone using Psi operatives at all? I haven't even built that training chamber yet but I'm not sure if it's worth it.

Ooh, just noted a small, but probably useful, thing when it comes to missions where you have to eliminate enemy forces. It's not really a spoiler, but I'll tag it anyway just for the benefit of those who want to discover everything themself on their initial playthroughs.
Crept past a turret, keeping a wide berth to stay out of its sight range, thinking I'd handle it at the end of the mission. Killed all the non-turret enemies and the mission completed for me. So, I guess if you find can simply go around a turret, you have the option to skip that enemy entirely.

So early game, I picked a scope from the enemies and its in my engineering inventory but I can't equip it. Do I have to wait to research it?

I'm having a weird bug in the tutorial mission.
It's like the scripting is severely delayed. Once my guy moves to the predetermined position, I have to wait like a minute before the pop-up for the next move appears. I can't do anything in between except scrolling around on the map.
Same thing when my turn ended. Had to wait forever for the cutscene to start.
Already restarted the game once but no dice.

Getting about 70 FPS here and I'm running on an SSD so I don't think it's my hardware.

The tutorial had big pauses for me too. Not nearly as long as a minute but I'd often have to wait 3-5 seconds for something to happen. I have the same issue in regular missions too.

It's not a hardware problem.

I thought the classic Guile hairdo was in, yet I can't find it. What gives?
You have to unlock some customization options. Gotta level your guys.

Nearly all additional utility comes from research, yeah. If you don't mind being told the specific requirement, you need to research
Modular Weapons
in order to equip components to your weapon slot.

EDIT: For what it's worth, and since the Scope item is maybe pretty dope, I think (assume? since every goddam thing in that tutorial is seemingly scripted) that the Scope is a guaranteed drop if you have tutorial checked. I restarted after my Tutorial-enabled test run and I'm a couple months in and I've still yet to get a Scope to drop. Dunno what I think about it though. I forget exactly what the XCOM 2 scope does, is it +5%? And was the EU Scope +10%?

Damn, normal is brutal. Having trouble beating the second mission already.

Hope the rest of game doesn't require me to memorize enemy locations and reload, throwing shit like
mind control and re-animation
on the second mission is pretty harsh.

edit: Fucking hell, failed again. How the crap am I supposed to deal with
losing one guy to mind control and 1-2 zombies
? It seems I have to plan ahead for that one enemy I now know is there :/

So do continent bonuses change every play? First run I had Europe completed and it was something to do with armor research. Current run and mousing over the bonus and it has to do with reusing weapon upgrades and combat stims.

My Mac absolutely destroyed the recommended requirements and the game ran terribly after modifying just about every variable. I guess I'll have to wait for console. :(

Try using the modded BaseEngine.ini. The stock one has pretty shit settings for a lot of the performance altering variables.

Yep - it's called modular weapons, iirc.

Gotcha, just finished that one. Didn't realize it equips in the weapon as opposed to an item slot like in EU. Well. Let's not lose this gun

I'm fumbling my way through my playthroughs, learning as I go, so I can't speak for any sort of established optimal build order, but in my current game I rushed to the Guerilla Tactics School and it feels like it's been a great investment as it very quickly allows you bump your pool of Rookies up to any chosen specific class (5 day process). I went straight for Advanced Warfare Centre also, which I actually regretted upon completion, but I've since noticed that my promoted units are passively getting a ton of additional perks alongside those promotions. This room is possibly a nice thing to get asap just to maximise those free bonuses.

I'm kinda purposely playing very fast and loose with the options at the moment just to get a feel for what's on offer, but I think both rooms might be worthy rushes, at least perhaps on Veteran, where I assume you have more wiggle room to play the Strategic focus game.

edit: apologies, ha, I think I misquoted you there, or at least inserted my own tangent unnecessarily into your question. Cuz I'm an idiot. I've no experience yet with the PSI Room.

that puzzling face
I can't imagine them not making a console port at this point. 100,000 concurrent steam users on day 1, they'd be throwing away money if they didnt.

You might want to sit down for this one...

I'm not so sure it'd be any time soon. The game has serious performance issues that seem to barely be brute-forceable with raw power. Unless a lot of things are pared down (procedural maps going in favor for a finite number of carefully crafted/optimized maps seem to be the easy-way-out solution*), I'm not sure if a console port is feasible before a shit ton of optimizations across the board.

*I realize and freely admit that my presumption that performance tanking is in any way related to this is just that - a presumption.
