Aliens
Terminator 2
Mad Max Fury Road

Can't go wrong with any of them.

I liked Die Hard. But I have no idea why it is being thrown around as the undisputed #1. What was so great about it besides coming before the others?

I think I actually prefer John Wick to the oldschool action films like Die Hard, T2, and Aliens. The action scenes are just more better realized for me.

& Here is where I branch off. I like John Wick, but I find it vast overrated by a lot of people. It shouldn't be even mentioned with such great movies.

That would be Terminator 2.

First post is right on the money, with second post coming in hot.

I'd also put Fury Road up there. Just an incredible film, like a beacon of hope after two decades of fucking Transformers.

Raiders falls more on the "Adventure" side of Action-Adventure for me, but it's also up there. FWIW, it's in my top 10 films of all time.

Hey man i think we can all agree the first transformers was actually really good. Then well i don't like to talk about then.

I don't know what people saw it in to be honest. I thought it was pretty bland. Didn't care about a single thing and the action was well shot enough but not to the point where I was blown away by any of it. Definitely does not belong anywhere near these other movies.

It's probably Die Hard or Raiders of the Lost Ark. Terminator 1 and 2, Aliens, Casino Royale, The Matrix, Fury Road, etc, are all good choices too.

I'll never understand mentions of films like The Raid - the action itself means nothing if you aren't invested in the characters. It's just meaningless choreography.

Same. The world of John Wick is very interesting and my favorite part, but the action wasn't mind blowing. Another one of overrated GAF favorites along with Speed Racer.

For me, it's not character-investment, it's tension that gives life to (most) action scenes. It's the reason why I love The Raid for its intense, gratuitous displays but am bored to tears by something like One Punch Man.

Die Hard, Raiders, Terminator (yes the first one without the huge saggy middle section and tighter pacing and action scenes) and Aliens are impossible for me to separate when it comes to Western films.

Eastern I'm still partial to Hard Boiled myself.

Anyway in honor of the majesty of Alan Rickman who delivered one of the best screen villains ever so effortlessly and was a terrific actor and lovely guy I'll give Die Hard the nudge for my vote.

The Raid 2. Definitely the best action movie.

Followed by Fury Road

How can you you say that about Raid but also mention Fury Road as one of the best?

Predator for me. The testosterone is high, tension is there, great gunplay and seeing those bad asses get shook up was awesome.

My vote goes to Die Hard as well.
Although I would also consider Predator, Commando and Enter the Dragon.

However, I can't really understand the love for Fury Road.
I found it decent, technically impressive but unsurprising and boring towards the end.
I don't think it comes close to Mad max 1 or 2 in terms of tension.
I just think people were so starved for a decent high budget action movie that they are greatly overrating it.

Chamber

love on your sleeve
T2
The Matrix
The Raid
Dredd

Those would be my candidates, I'd probably pick a different one depending on when you asked me.

The Raid made me sick. I couldn't watch the second one. Cool stuff, but fucked me up deep in the end.

Soapbox Killer

Grand Nagus
1980's - John Woo's The Killer, Die Hard

1990's - Hard Boiled, The Matrix

2000's - Kill Bill, Bad Boys 2

2010's John Wick, Fury Road

But if I had to pick one, it's THE KILLER, laid the foundation for both action Movies and HIP HOP (Only Built For Cuban Lynx)

Really tough picking just one, since would you pick one based on a single action sequence, or best story plot, hero, villain, creative weapon use, environment/setting, or tension buildup? How important would rewatchability of movie be?

Obviously you have all the classics mentioned like Die Hard, Matrix, the Arnold list, the Rambos, the sci fi classics like Alien or Robocop, etc.

I'd add some of the crazier movies like Crank or Shoot em Up (Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti) that have insane fight sequences, and of course then there is the entire sub genre of Hong Kong and kung fu movies to consider...

There are lots of great action movies, many of which have been mentioned in this thread. BUT, if I had to pick ONE absolute best, then it would come down to two choices for myself: either Die Hard or Predator. I always go back and forth as to which of the two is my ultimate favorite action movie, but ultimately I can never decide which is the best, but it is definitely between those two.

Around Christmas time I choose Die Hard, but in warm weather I choose Predator.

DeathoftheEndless

Crashing this plane... with no survivors!

I don't understand why you think action scenes only matter if you like the characters.
