NPD Sales Results for January 2016

In the end it was a bit of a damned if you do, damned if you don't for Capcom I suspect in terms of launching early.

They have to have the game ready for both their financials and for the new season of Pro competition, but releasing what some might describe as "half a game" definitely seem to have hurt its reviews (though nowhere near what some suspected, because it -seems- that the core game is simply superb).

So while it is releasing in the mid 80s (MC) score, there will probably always be a nagging suspicion that maybe, possibly, SF V would have been a near 90 if it had been complete and the SP would have been on the level (June hopefully will answer that question)...

But that we will never know, and neither will Capcom ever know whether that would have implied better launch month sales or not...

200k to 300k for street fighter? You are all crazy.

Tp be fair I lean towards the higher end of that. But I find it difficult to see it far exceeding that.

Thats said we are still pre launch and my opinions often change post launch. That said by no means am I staking everything I have on the prediction.

There's no way to show proof but SFV is one of these games fans would like to keep always installed and ready to play for a quick session anytime they feel like it.

I was referencing Demigod's earlier comments regarding tomb raider. A referential joke, to which Demigod replied with great skill.

Man! Anything less than 300K would be hilariously fucking low for SFV, anything close to 200K and Capcom may as well kill the franchise.

SFV is going to be the only SF this gen I think. This is going to stick around for awhile, and they were getting payed by Sony anyway.

Also that reminds of Tomb Raider talk last year.

And you think Tomb Raider is in a good state? Xbox version underperformed big time, PC is looking to have a solid start but I highly it's gonna match TR 2013 numbers, and then you have PS4 verison coming this holiday season which will absolutely do worse than Xbox version.

Xbox family version is over 1 million, depending on how SE handle the PS4 port, it could shoot past the Xbox version just because of the install base difference and the ROTW, and TR 2013 has been on multiple sales and is $20 on Steam right now. ROTTR is $60, hasn't been out for a month, and still sold >460k on Steam.

Once every version is out, I wouldn't doubt that combined, ROTTR actually did good. It won't reach what TR 2013 did because that launched on 5 different platforms that were active, and now TR is only on 3 active platforms and 1 dead one.

Chobel where do you stand on SFV's opening NPD month? We need to know how it will do...

Haha, that's like baiting a recovering addict with "just a little taste, for old time's sake".

Chobel, just a little prediction... On a Sony console exclusive game, for old time's sake?

Eh I'll go with tax season. Don't see sfv pushing consoles that much and amazon while incompetent sometimes usually has good stock

Do you really want his tag to get worse and worse and worse and worse and worse? :p

And how exactly is SE gonna handle the PS4 port in a good way? They're launching in the busiest period of the year, the only way somehow the game will do well if there's gonna buzz around it (not gonna happen in Fall and for a 1 year old port, and I can't see SE putting marketing behind it) and/or SE price it really competitively (LOL!)

And how can ROTTR have good sales when Xbox sales are nothing to write about and PS4 sales are at best gonna match Xbox sales? I can't see it reaching TR sales when you even remove the current gen sales (PS4+XBO versions)

I hardly go digital for games over $20, but SFV is something that’s going to be played for the rest of the gen, no need for a disc. I’m going digital, I’d imagine many fighting game fans are tbh.

Either way, we should hear something about SFV from Capcom in early March if it did well.

I'm expecting the PS4 version to bomb in the US but sell pretty well in Europe. The majority of the fanbase hasn't picked up the game and won't be able to until this holiday. It's basically a new game release. If it's a "GOTY" edition with all the DLC and base game for less than $60, I think it'll do well.

It's not though, no one is gonna be fooled by that. Ok maybe someone with a good logical thinking will believe that, but the majority of mass market won't think the same, it's game which they saw ads about it (or in stores) last year. And when you have the hottest products of the year in front of you, why choose RoTTR? A game from last year? Sure it's a great game, but it's not a must have game.

And good luck having GOTY edition with less than $60.

BTW, what do you mean by "well" here?

The first rumor that revealed its release date and DLC packed in also said it would be $40.

I expect it to sell slightly better than Tomb Raider: DE.

I wish we could get digital numbers. the thing about SFV is this will be the only edition. So it'll have legs and will go down in price as the months go by. It's also on PC which is digital only and there will be a community there.

What sucks about those numbers are, we don't know how many came from Nvidia. Yeah its still sold but Nvidia probably bought it for really cheap.

TR:DE was full price, GOODLUCK on this shit being anything but $60.

Just ordered SF V Collector's Edition from Amazon, couldn't wait for BB, no idea why I can't order it there no more. +1 for NPD!

So then, if we need to get the gap to 100k, the PS4/XB1 either did 234/134 or 235/135

Simply using a base 235k for the PS4 and the pie brings the gap to slightly above 100k and 234k is just slightly below 100k but above 99.5k

Which would you use if the gap is 100k?

Oh, good point! We can use it to range down the PS4/XB1 monthly total, which would make the WIU LTD offset less. (^_^) From those two, I like the 234K/134K, and then for predictions, we'd make it an even 5K at 235K/135K. WIU would be 41K in that scenario, but again to nearest 5K would be 40K still for predictions.

Anything on 3DS? 60K? 65K? 70K?

Well it is the 1st real reason for the Street Fighter fan base to buy a current generation console.

These people pay $300 for Joysticks I don't see why they wouldn't buy a $350 console.

I see we are already back to dismissing sales concerns with "the digital sales are gonna be high." Didn't we just deal with this for Halo 5? How about we learn from that and not retread the same old song AGAIN.

But digital sales for Halo 5 were higher than normal for an AAA title. :p

But seriously, SFV will be fine. The worry does give us something to discuss at least.

They were higher than normal yes but still not nearly as much as people were claiming. We are looking a theoreticall range of 15% (minimum) to 30% (absolute maximum) for digital sales. Anyone expecting more than 30% for any game that is not getting a limited physical release of some kind is sorely mistaken. I could see SFV being on the higher end here but I would be shocked if it is more than 25% digital.

Also LMFAO at people still referencing "the know" as a reliable source of any kind. Need I remind you all that these are the same guys that tripled down on MS buying out the rights for Silent HIlls and that it was somehow magically well into development and close to release? First it was totally gonna be revealed at E3. Then it was totally gonna be revealed at Gamescom. Then it was totally gonna be revealed the MS event. Yea they have zero credibility. Can we just never reference these clowns again please? Cheers.

I thought Halo digital sales were good though? lol..

anyway, it does make sense that many fighting game fans will be going digital here. SF is not looking to sell 3-5 million in a month like other blockbusters, I think it’s reasonable to assume it’ll debut 300-600K NPD and should hit it’s 2 million mark (shipped) by March.

I know I’m going digital after the whole roadmap, update system was announced, just throwing it out there.

What are the LTD for the last two SF games?

Street Fighter IV has sold 3.4 million units.[15] Super Street Fighter IV has sold 1.9 million units,[15] in addition to 1.1 million of the Arcade Edition (full game only).[15] Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition sold an additional 1.2 million copies.[15] Ultra Street Fighter IV has sold 500,000 copies (full game only, without counting PS4 version) by September 30, 2014. This adds up to sales of more than 8.1 million copies in total. Upon its release, the game received universal critical acclaim; receiving universally high scores from many gaming websites and magazines. It has also been listed among the greatest games of its generation.
