LTTP: Marvel's Jessica Jones or when a show is longer than it should be

OP, please. Suddenly it is at the level of Dexter and Twilight? Way above, way above. Even with the show obviously becoming tired.

A few points, though.
Jessica is not trained. She is not strong because of her muscles. She is not a fighter. She has superhuman strength. Not superhuman muscle size.

I think that the fighting shown being lacking was absolutely deliberate. And her character showed traits that is very natural and normal for a quite large margin of alcoholics. The attitude, the shouting, the "fuck it all" manners...it is a good portrayal of a semi-broken character. Whether you like that character type or not is a different topic of conversation, but that does not disqualify her acting.

At the end of the day, I agree that this could have been condensed to 10 episodes, and work even better. But it is close to being a classic already. Much more so than Daredevil, imho. (And I loved Daredevil, until it got tired at the end of the run).

The moment Jessica jones shitty neighbor knocks her out for literally hours, conveniently so purple man could disappear, when just before an entire elite squad with tazers couldn't bring her down was when it cemented for me that the writing just was not good in this series. You want to like it because some of the acting is good and it's fun to see an r rated comic story that is kinda taken seriously, but when you really think about it your brain has to shut off to understand some of the events. Including why no one thought of wearing earplugs when approaching helgrave before the headphone scene at the end (that worked like a charm)

Actually, nope, not at all. She is becoming more and more tired as the show goes on. She foregoes sleep, she gets hit by trucks, gets shot, and even that one tiny bit of sleep she gets after getting hit by a truck is interrupted. And then comes the insane duel in the apartment. She is weakening, it is very obvious.

Yeah, agree with everything in the OP. I also found several characters to be not only extremely unlikeable (twin sister, carrie-ann moss, junkie dude who magically kicks drug addiction in like a week), but also fairly irrelevant to the core plot. They existed to pad things out unnecessarily.

David Tennant is the best part of this show,
and he's not even going to be in Season 2. I don't know where they can go with the show that would actually interest me.

Like everyone else has said, if they were dead-set on 13 episodes they needed to slot in smaller cases. Way too much focus on Jessica vs Kilgrave, they should have each done their own thing in between.

Show falls apart after Nuke, and doesn't really put itself back together

I thought it was better than DareDevil also. The actors for Kingpin and Foggy really turned me off.

How can you hate on those 2 yet tolerate the black ops guy in JJ? The guy is the worse actor in the show and made worse by a piece of shit character he's playing.

I actually can't even get through the second episode, I feel it's that bad. Daredevil was leagues better in everything from the get go, Jessica Jones however feels like C grade TV ala Bold and the Beautiful.

I wanted to like it after Daredevil but that first episode was rough and the second doesn't help. I'm not gonna waste my time watching TV shows in hopes they get better later on, just like I won't play a game for 10 hours because "it'll get better after 20."

The show gets better after Kilgrave made appearances which happen in episode
3
.

Killgrave really bothered me as a villain, his power is so oppressive, so abhorrent that I couldn't enjoy episodes with him much and wished someone else would have been the main villain.

Also Killgrave pretty much won and it's JJ's indecisiveness that cost so many lives.

I take back what I said before about the season ending at episode 10. I was being rather specific. I change my mind, this season would have had an acceptable ending around episodes 8-10.

Episode 11 (Nuke episode) is just BLECH and the story just takes a dive.

Show ran out of ideas very quickly, should have been like 6-8 episodes. I thought it was such a mess that it shouldn't get a second season.

Her alcoholism seemed like a running gag, along with her broken door.

It's like how Goku is incapacitated at inconvenient times.

I also didn't like it from the start, and even though more Killgrave makes the later episodes a bit better, the show still nosedives again from the midway point. After watching the entire season, I'd say there's no point to keep watching if you're not enjoying it now.

It was a bit too long and Jessica felt weak for a girl with super strength, why does Luke even beat her he's supposed to be super resistant not super strong

Just because Jessica has super strength it doesn't mean she was trained to fight. Cage, on the other hand, knew how to fight to an extent, so he had the advantage. Also add in the fact that Jessica was reluctant to fight Cage in the first place.
Unlike Daredevil, she basically knew how to toss fools around like ragdolls with her strength and that's it .

Nah. Some of the fight choreography was just bad.

I ended up sleeping through a few episodes and my wife kept watching. When I woke up, she had like one critical plot point to catch me up on, so yeah. Feeling the one or two eps long piece for sure.

i thought jessica jones was ok, but I don't get the love for daredevil. i thought that show was poorly shot, had horrible art direction and amateur level action.

I apologize in advance for the language and tone of the following post. I won't read any of the posts before or after this one until I finish the show. Which is hopefully fucking soon jesus christ.

Just have to get this out of my system because I just watched one of the last episodes (I fucking hope), where
Hope got released from jail and Killgrave took her to the restaurant to be exchanged with his dad.

THIS IS THE DUMBEST FUCKING SHOW EVER.

I'm really livid right now at how this show is turning out. It had so much potential.

EVERY. SINGLE. FUCKING. CHARACTER in this show is fucking dumb. Like they're all fucking idiots. All of them. There's not a single redeemable character that's remotely smart or takes the correct action. Jessica herself is stupid as FUCK. UGGGH.

The only character that had a sliver of promise and had the good judgement to
try and kill Killgrave before he inflicts any more damage on the world -- Simpson -- is now some weird secret agent on drugs psycho who just killed an innocent cop.
Whatttt theee fuck. UGGGHAGaadjkafhk.

ALSO, NOTE TO JESSICA: HE MAGICALLY CAN'T CONTROL YOU ANYMORE. SINCE APPARENTLY EPISODE ONE. Which, again, means all of this was pointless.
And yet SOMEHOW you continue to fail, harder than ever. Why?

HERE'S ANOTHER HINT, DUMBASS: KILL KILLGRAVE. WTF. FUCK YOUR EVIDENCE. How many people have to die before you stop trying to save Hope? By my count, at least 7 so far. How fucking dumb are you? Extremely, apparently.

OH, YOU FINALLY GOT VIDEO EVIDENCE OF HIM AFTER 10 EPISODES? How about you fucking secure that footage. Like TAKE the camera with you and put it somewhere safe? Nah, let's just leave it here unattended. Oh now psycho cop burned everything down. Great payoff for 3 episodes of nothing. Don't get me started on Trish. Or Malcolm.

Or the stupid ass
lawyer. HEY, this mind controlling psycho made my client murder both her parents and raped my friend and murdered a bunch of other people. On the other hand, he can make my ex sign my divorce papers. K I'm gonna take a chance on you. Don't let me down!!!!

Basically, they spend a couple of episodes building up towards something and taking action, and then every action they take is immediately negated or rendered useless when they inevitably fail their goal because every character participating is fucking stupid. Even when they ACTUALLY succeed, they fail.
This is the only show I've seen that's been able to pull off this fucking amazing feat.

How atrocious is the writing in this show. Good god. I'm praying to every deity that the next episode is the last. Please tell me they haven't renewed this show.

I jumped the show around episode 8 and judging from what I've read, that was a good call.

Show seems to be bad at the beginning and at the end with only the middle being good fun. Oh well, at least I got to see more of David Tennant. Doubt I'll be back for the second season.

Luke Cage has super strength in addition to bulletproof skin. Jessica Jones is super strong, but mostly a glass cannon.

Now this is a rant I can get behind.

I have to add my 2 pence and say I wasn't convinced by the villain either, despite David Tenant's valiant effort. Thematically you have one of Marvel's best villains, in the worst possible sense, but to me the writing had fleeting moments of romcom territory. It was really weird considering the rape subtext. Was
Kilgrave
really so sincerely oblivious to how much his attempts at romanticizing sucked? It's sort of understandable that his social skills would suck due to the nature of his superpower, but in the end he too came off as a complete idiot.

Can't really argue with.

The more I think about this show, the less I like it.

It definitely needed one less twist, maybe two.

Initially it was actually really great how Jones and Kilgrave kept making moves and countering each other. But it was just way too much by the end.

David Tennant tried to carry the show. But for me, there was just too much bad for even him to propel up. He ran circles around everyone else's acting though, except maybe a couple of the supporting characters (Trish, Trinity).

REALLY wanted to like it more than I did... but the writing, acting, action... it was, I finally accept, a letdown.

It dragged on too long. Everyone on the show is incredibly stupid. 80% of the show is a waste of time with build-up that leads to absolutely zero payoff. The tone is incredible inconsistent, the pacing is all wrong, and the finale was a completely disaster.

Even that final confrontation made NO sense.
So Trish is a distraction so that when they dramatically reveal she's not Jessica... Jessica just, er, stands up and announces her presence anyway?

Also, turns out headphones and loud music can stop his mind control and they never thought to do that? That's, like, a super-easy, inexpensive way to rush in and defeat him, you morons...

I really wanted to like the show more, because I'm a huge fan of Jessica Jones and the Alias storylines, but the show was missed potential throughout.

I agree with what many have said; they should have had her solve more cases before STARTING with Killgrave. Hint at him. Reference him. Make him this haunting ghost in her mind and then, at the halfway mark, bring him in. Making his case the main case since Episode 1 was a huge mistake.

That bugged the SHIT out of me. The goal was to distract Kilgrave and get his goons all in one spot...then reveal yourself, even FARTHER AWAY from Kilgrave than your distraction, and...that's the extent of your plan?

I by and large liked the show and what it did well, it did great but fuck me they had no idea what they were doing with the Simpson super cop and the Lawyer subplot in episodes 11 and 12.

My only real beef is with Episodes 11 and 12. Right up until
Kilgrave was in the solitary sealed room and then escaped
I was buying it. Then it just felt like pure filler. The stuff with the neighbour and the support group, whilst initially serving a purpose, just fell apart in those episodes also.

The Finale...was serviceable. Im kinda apprehensive about Series 2 since im down for more Jessica and Luke, but I'm not down for more Trish, the Simpson cop, the neighbour or more Carrie Anne Moss. Since I don't think they're going to axe all the supporting team, theyve got a mountain to climb.

I never saw the criticism about the action to be very relevant. Outside of Simpson and Trish nobody is exactly a trained combatant. Super powers don't just give you that expertise. The scenes with Trish are probably the best in the series and she also does the most training we see. For me it simply added to the idea that they were regular people who happened to have powers instead of traditional superheroes.

I just finished the show tonight. I enjoyed it overall but not nearly as much as Daredevil. It felt sloppier like it didn't always know where it was going and it felt slow a few times. The writing was clunky at times and didn't always feel natural or logical.
That whole super-Simpson plot really came out of left field and felt out of place in the series.

Kilgrave was super awesome, possibly my favorite MCU villain so far. Just so so good, I loved it.
Was really disappointed when they killed him, but then again I don't know how much longer they could milk the same gimmick anyway. Id rather they not close that door, though.

At this point I feel the show has said everything it has to say so I'm not all that excited about a season 2, but I'm not against it. I'd be more excited to see her in that future The Defenders show Ive heard about, where she can be a solid asset but not have to carry the whole show herself. Because really,
with Kilgrave gone
, I don't give a shit. He stole the spotlight, it was all worth it for him.

The showrunner previously worked on Dexter, and you get a bunch of the same flaws here that you had there. Your opinion's in line with the mainstream.

Apparently the episodes cut together at like 30 minutes, so they had to go back and add more stuff in, especially talk-y scenes that were previously shortened because they weren't great. Hence.

It definitely dragged too long for me, which made Jessica an infinitely less likable character because it gave her more and more opportunities to act like a dumbass. By the end I just wanted Kilgrave to kill her and end it.

Exactly. Jessica is honestly the real villain. Because she's a moron.

I wonder how many fucking people died because she wouldn't kill Kilgrave, including the person she was trying to save. Someone should go back and count. Although I wouldn't wish rewatching this show on anyone.

Good to see i came to say this and its already done

We call this the "on/off super strenght". They turn it on or off according to what the script needs

Also: i didnt checked the whole thread, but does people complain about the number of sex scenes? They were too much, too slow, too boring, pointless. It felt like they were saying "look how edgy our show is!" But it was more like "here another pointless slow boring scene that just make this season longer"

When will Netflix learn that shorter running lengths are better*?

Bless Master of None and Love for being half hours, even if they're comedies. So much easier to digest. 10 episode seasons too.

*Do they have to make 42 minute to sell internationally?

I agree with everything in the OP... but it touched on some stuff that still made it my #1 MCU thing.

It was like someone took the smarter superhero thing ever made but stretched it out too long and let a dumb 13 year old do a final pass on the script.

The subtext and themes were fucking cool. Just wish the actual focus elements could carry their weight. It was kind of like a reverse Dardevil which I found to be 100% sizzle with no steak. If you could mix the two you'd have a stew baby.

At 8-10 episodes, with one or two fewer "Oops we had Kilgrave but he somehow slipped away!" moments, I think the show would have been much better. At one point he escapes their clutches because that redheaded girl somehow knocks out the superpowered Jessica by bonking her on the head with a 2x4.

It's weird that your opinion is a lot more common now on GAF yet when it was released all those months ago all you heard was praise and speaking out was sacrilege against such a bold and empowering show tackling a hot button real world issue. I thought the show was boring and poorly written, failing to take advantage of its premise and central character at the time of release. I stand by those statements now.

I liked the premise but disliked the execution.

As others mentioned, this show suffers from severe *characters making dumb descision to prolong the arc another episode or two/introduce new drama*- syndrome. It affects the whole cast and it brings the show down because it's super obvious when it happens.

If it had to be 13 episodes long they should have just done a second super villain arc. or more cases before introducing killgrave.

This is the key takeaway.

The hate for it coming in the last few pages is sad to see. Its positives I feel far outweighed the bad, but it really did feel like some tightening overall to the structure was needed.

Kilgrave nigh on plain disappearing for a few episodes near the end was very misguided. Whoever thought the neighbours subplot and the divorce subplot needed that much time and placement in the last two episodes needs schooling on narrative pacing.
