The game looks outstanding, but they stole that art straight up. Still expecting this to be one of my games of the year, though.

That's a picture in a frame within the game trailer.

...
If people think that ND -intentionally- stole the artwork for that kind of insignificant usage ... I don't even...

Imo, it's either an honest mistake with a bunch of art shuffled and the wrong picture making it through the cracks of licencing

Or

More likely that was contractual art that Ubi did not have the exclusive rights to, and ND purchased from the creator/ owner in all good faith without being told/ realizing it had been used for AC IV beforehand.

I was also thinking it could have been done with Ubi's permission as a tribute of some sort, but given the reaction on twitter, I guess not.

Has no one from Naughty Dog said anything? We know they're up and reading all this.

Get out ahead of this shit, man. Silence just makes you look guilty as shit.

Surely it makes a difference that the art is literally in a picture frame in a character's apartment. It's not like they're plagiarising it in an environment.

I'm not familiar with the laws and whatnot, but do film/TV producers need to get licensing for pieces of art hung up on walls too?

At the very least they would probably need permission for using someone else's copyrighted work in their game.

I'm sorry, but this is the dumbest, most petty thing I have ever read/seen. Next thing we know Naughty Dog will be charged with using characters that resemble "humans."

And even if it were a copy, at least it'll be in a game I intend on purchasing.

If? That's obviously Ubisoft's concept art in the trailer, no ifs about it. A painting hanging on a wall isn't much in the grand scheme of game development (which likely is the reason no one at ND caught this sooner / forgot to replace the picture) but using other people's work without permission is still a big no-no.

But, yeah, it's likely just an oversight.

It's funny, the first thing I thought of when I saw that island was Black Flag. Not a whole lot they can do now that they've actually modeled that environment based off the AC artwork.

edit: And the notion that ND higher-ups would actually consent to stealing artwork from another game is embarrassing. This is a licensing issue or some artist's fuckup. Don't be silly.

Do we think it was the Ex-Ubisoft/Current Naughty Dog employee who was like "fuck those guys" and put it into the game? Like without anyone else knowing.

Like he could have easily photoshopped it and been like "how does this look team?" and granted that nobody on the team studied assassins creed 4's concept art book, they were like "yeah, looks good to me!"

People love to find problems where there are none, huh? No one has any idea at all about anything and then everyone's first instinct is to think of the worst case scenario.

It does, and I would be surprised if ND have fucked up and used the image without permission - especially seeing as they had a similar issue with using a copyrighted map in The Last of Us.

Perhaps someone at ND needs a refresher in copyright law. Or perhaps they just use random images off Google as placeholders and forget to change some of them later on... which would still be a somewhat poor workflow IMO, if you don't at least make a list of the stuff you used so you can be sure that you don't miss anything later on.

Ellen Page and the art piece I can understand.

But I'm convinced the black actress stuff is a joke. There's no way you can think they look the same. Aside from being black. And looking like people.

In my educated opinion, I would estimate this to be a minute or two's work to copy/paste someone elses work into Photoshop, crop it and then post it into my videogame trailer.

Reposting from the other thread.

Jonathan Cooper is an ex-ubisoft animator. He joined Naughty Dog and said some stuff about his previous employer when the female assassins thingy came to light.

Now with this news, an Ubisoft Montreal dev (creative director) tweeted this to him

He waited two years... all for revenge.

I like it.

My goodness you guys. Way to sensationalize a non issue. I guess this is the next "internet gamer rage" topic this week. Maybe this is the one that rallies the little sheep after the Street Fighter V release "fiasco".

Ouch. Not a good look. That's pretty undeniable.

This thing will hurts Naughty Dog's image for ever

It won't ruin anything, but anyone who hears this (and this is a headline that writes itself, nice and sensational) will have it somewhere in the back of their head. It's an easy bullshit insult to throw at ND when people want to shit on them. THIEVES HAHAHA.

It's petty but I betcha it sticks around.

unless of course it is revealed that Uncharted and Assassin's Creed share the same universe. BOOM.

lol yea.

Edit: they should replace it with a Crash Bandicoot picture.

Edit 2: Vivendi knew about this! They want to sue Sony. lol yea.

Edit 3: it's a very easy fix but yea someone should get at least a warning at ND.
