Sonic the Hedgehog 25th Anniversary - Retrospective

Good job OP!

I've been a Sonic fan for as long as I've been gaming. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the first video game I ever played. I begged for a Dreamcast for Christmas because of Sonic Adventure. I actually enjoyed Sonic 2006! Genuinely enjoyed it! I used to be an absurd fanboy for this franchise. Sonic is just one of those things from my childhood that I won't let die. Really curious about the 25th anniversary game. Been wanting something on the level of Generations, since well Generations lol. God, that game on PC really did meet my expectations. If the Classic Sonic physics were just a bit tighter, that game would have been near perfection. Love Generations, love Modern Sonic. Boost baby boost!

Thank you :).

06 had its moments, so I enjoyed it at some parts XD.

Generations is a great game and while I have some issues with it, its more from personal preference on some of the stages selection & lack of story then anything else :).

Happy you enjoy my threads and hope you look forward to the Sonic Adventure one! That's coming after my mega-blowout Sonic Jam thread :).

Op this is a tremendous effort you have put into this work! Super!

Keep it up!

Thanks :D. I love the series and its honestly nice seeing people enjoy talking about the Sonic series :). These 20+ threads I have made in the past month showed me people still love the Sonic series; I couldn't be happier realizing this.

Just a small update.

There has been talks of the possibility of the anniversary game being Nintendo-only this year and considering I plan on getting a PS4 this year, I might not be able to play the anniversary game at all this year in that case.

So unlike Boom and Lost World, which I can play the 3DS versions and compare that to what I seen from the console versions via YouTube and comments, I will have no access to the anniversary game if that is the case.

I will not cover the anniversary game when it launches and I will not talk about it in this thread outside of a long post when its announced if it is Nintendo only.

Just a heads up, as the anniversary game is the reason I started this series of threads in the first place. If the anniversary game is on a platform I cannot access, I might be bitter about the news and I don't want to bring that into this retrospective; Sonic deals with enough toxicity to begin with.

So, again, just a heads up in case you were all wondering if I was covering the anniversary game or not this year. If I can access it though (PS4), then I will make a very long thread covering the game for sure then :).

Will post the Tail's Adventure thread latter this weekend (college work kinda sneaked up on me XD) and the Sonic Jam thread will be up by Wednesday next week.

That damn anniversary game better not be a Wii-U exclusive. I own a Wii-U, but I don't want the game limited by that hardware. I want to see Sonic with current gen fidelity.

Rk128, do you want some support with the threads to Boom and Lost World U? Both of these games are vastly different to their 3DS counter parts. I would help you with any questions that may arise, I have also played all Sonic games available on any console, so I would be able to answer questions regarding comparisons to any other Sonic game you need.

Also, even if the next Sonic game was exclusive to any system (which I seriously doubt, there is absolutely no indication of that), you would probably not know before E3, i.e. not before this series of threads is done ^^.

That would be most appreciated :).

I am getting Boom 3DS and Lost World 3DS next week, so when I am done with both games will send you a PM with any questions I may have on the Wii U versions.

Thank you for the help buddy :D!

Gave that heads up as......well, don't want to sound bitter man :(. Sonic has enough toxicity, so I don't want to be a part of that. And you bring up a good point about the game not being announced by April XD! Who knows man :'). But if I can play it, will put it as part of the retrospective in some fashion.

Wait , what? Anniversary Nintendo only? where did that come from?

I reeeeeeaaaally doubt it, honestly.

Many, many NX threads tend to have people bring up the possibility of the next major Sonic game being Nintendo only again.

And as someone not planing on getting a NX this year (WILL get the handheld, but not this year; waiting at least 2 years), this bothers me as I won't be playing this hypothetical game for a good 2 years.

That's just people wishing. There's nothing that shows the new Sonic game will be exclusive.

They're gonna want to get the most of sales of the 25th Anniversary game, they're just not gonna put it in a console that just released.

I hope you are right....but not expecting anything. My excitement for the anniversary game will be tampered until its officially announced and I know if I can play it or not.

Just a heads up that the Tails Adventure's topic (Adventure's and Sky Patrol) is up: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=197680555#post197680555

It was nice playing these two; they really surprised me honestly :D.

Now we will be celebrating the Classic Era with a BANG through my Sonic Jam thread coming this week.

Like I said a few times, this will be a mega-thread covering everything classic Sonic, so I hope you all look forward to it :).

I hope they can do Generations 2 or fuck, just remake Sonic 1-3/Knuckles HD

We know nothing about the anniversary game yet, so I guess we just have to wait and see what happens.

But I am willing to bet we will be getting a Classic Sonic Compilation and a remaster of Generations/Colors on current gen systems for the anniversary at the very least.

"Classic Series:
Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sonic Spinball
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
Sonic CD
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles
Knuckles Chaotix

Sonic R

These were the only Sonic games I ever played/beat. They were all solid experiences(except Spinball! what a fuck up). I have a weird soft spot for Sonic R ever since first playing it in my youth. Even back then I knew it was trash but it had the same effect Shaq Fu did on me where I didn't want to stop until I had mastered this broken ass game.

You felt the sunshine, lived in the city, worked it out and going back in time buddy, that's why you kept pushing onwards in Sonic R ;)

Its soundtrack takes a mixed game and makes it a utter classic :').

Just a heads up, I got this idea from a poster commenting on me not talking about Sonic into Dreams, a part of Nights' Christmas Extra Disk......and I thought "Why not cover other Sonic Team titles?"

I think this is a good idea for a few reasons; I covered a few of the Dreamcast Era games already and it will be odd having another round of 2D Sonic's having the spotlight after Sonic Adventure is covered, I cannot comment fairly on a few latter games (like Pinball Party and the All Stars Series) due to various Sonic Team IP appearing in those games.....and I want a little longer before I can talk about Shadow the Edgehog & Sonic Genesis. Both will be really negative send-offs for this era of Sonic, so want to cover positive games before I get to that (or end on Billy Hatcher or something).

So, the following will be covered once I get through with the Adventure and Advance threads:
-Ristar
-Pyuo Pop
-Nights into Dreams
-Burning Rangers
-Chu Chu Rocket
-Phantasy Star Online
-Samba De Amigo
-Billy Hatchet & The Giant Egg

In that order, will be covering games within each game/series and how it links up to Sonic. Going to edit the OP now to find nice spots for these games and I hope you look forward to me talking about these hidden games :D.

Also a quick update - got Boom 3DS for my 2DS (its 20 bucks on the NA E-Shop), so I can cover that game in great detail now :D.

Will be getting Lost World 3DS and Generations 3DS in the near future as well :).

I liked the Boom 3DS demo and will be posting a quick impressions post in the OP within the next day or so :). While its on sale for 20 bucks, might was well tell you all about the game XD!

The sale ends on 3/21, so hopefully by then I will get to talking about Boom 3DS via thread (though not expecting that, considering I just added a lot of games to the Dreamcast era for me to cover :l).

Will post about the game before tomorrow ends, so hope that helps :D.

Hello everyone :). Due to the games being part of the retrospective, decided to get Boom 3DS today and it was on sale for 20 bucks on the NA E-Shop!

After playing the game for an hour or so, going to comment on it and will post another 'Quick Look' on the game (as there is a lot to it). Going to go in depth on the game with its own thread but we are not their yet :).

Gameplay:
Classic 2D Sonic fun, but with a twist. Sonic and company are fast like they should be but each character has a unique ability. Sonic can air-dash twice and spindash, Tails can use his Sea Fox (ah ;))/hover/throw bombs, Knuckles can dig into the ground ala Drill Wisp and Sticks can throw her boomerang. This sounds like how Sonic 3&K works, and that is great. It allows the level design to play with everyone's abilities in fun ways.

Level Design:
This is both a good and bad thing so far; its very open and you have a lot of paths to do through depending on which character you use. But, you need to go down every path to collect Crystals and Blue Prints in order to get Emblems. You need X amount of them to unlock new levels and when you only have 34 in the entire game.......you need to look EVERYWHERE just to proceed in the game. I honestly don't mind this, so far. I could easily see myself get annoyed with this but for now, its manageable. I am the exploritive gamer that looks everywhere when playing levels, so I guess that is why I am still enjoying the game despite that odd design choice.

Races and Tunnel Sections:
The former is Sonic Rivals done right while the latter is the Sonic 2 Special Stages but done a bit differently. Races put you in a course against one of four characters, with you collecting rings and swinging around with your enerbeam (alongside using Sonic's air dash in fun ways to get short-cuts). I liked these parts of the game a lot and the race with Sticks was a lot of fun :D.

The tunnel sections is....well, the Sonic 2 Special Stages but track focused. You go through lanes (left/right) with the ability to boost and use the enerbeam to attach on zip-lines in the sky. Like the races, they are very fun.

Presentation:
Music is great with the Sonic R, 3D Blast Saturn and Racing Transformed composer Richard coming back to make this games score. The presentation does do a good job using the 3DS tech; everyone is nicely animated and everything matches the 'Sonic' look.

Story:
Meh.....lets move on :l. Ironic considering the show is great with this but the game....is more annoying then funny. You can skip them by mashing A at the very least.

Overall, I like this so far and it feels like one of the better handheld Sonic's (though considering the Sonic's on 3DS, that is not saying much sadly. Generations 3DS reportedly is decent though and Lost World 3DS starts out strong I think). Looking forward to playing more of this and I hope you give it a shot at 20 bucks :).

Hello!

Made my final post in the Sonic Jam thread, covering the various remixes the community has produced.....and now the classic era is finished.

Going to cover fan games in there own threads as 'extra' stuff (open to new games you guys send me via PM too :)) and I will be covering Generations latter in April to cap-off this retrospective :).

But now I'm am strictly covering Dreamcast and Modern Eras. I covered some of those games already, but I know many have strong feelings toward the Dreamcast/Modern Era games, so I hope you all don't mind my focus shifting to the rest of the series.

Sonic Adventure is up next and its going to be a massive thread. The OP is going to be huge, as its a landmark game for everything, not just Sonic. It was Sega's big launch game on the Dreamcast, it was Sonic's first jump into 3D (a platforming game in 3D ala Mario 64) and a lot was riding on this.

Very excited to be covering this and I hope you all enjoy that thread! Its coming no latter then Sunday :).

I've read this post several times because I'm in awe at just how much you're the opposite of me.

Sonic 1 is my "damn this is next gen" moment.

Mega Drive was my first console and Sonic 1 was bundled with it.

I was like "damn things can't get better than this"

It's a testament to how good the Mega Drive Sonic the Hedgehogs (& Knuckles) were that they are still so playable and loved.

I will be honest after Sonic 3D and Sonic R I stopped getting Sonic games really.

I had one for PS2, I can't remember the name but you had Sonic, knuckles, tails in one team, Metal Sonic and some strange characters, and lastly Amy Rose, a big fishing cat and someone else in the other team. I actually enjoyed it but too much emphasis was on speed instead of platforming.

It's where the series has declined. They focus on speed too much, Mario was always the faster game I felt but 3D games are nailed by Mario, Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 and 3D world shows how to do it.

I love Sonic Mwgadrive/Mwgadrive CD era and always will, but too many games have been awful and tarnished the series for me.

Also Sonic 4 was awful. There was a level km Part 2 that I scrapped through just. It was no fun at all.

I've read this post several times because I'm in awe at just how much you're the opposite of me.

I am being more kinder to the game because I expected a lot worse (based on reviews and media coverage of the game), so count my impressions as "Wow, its not 06 bad.....good".

Sorry you didn't enjoy the game but I understand the issues you bring up. The lack of a spin jump is a real problem at points (as you have to use the homing attack to kill foes, otherwise you get cheap pot-shots) and the level design when you go fast is a bit to automated.

Will be covering the game in excessive detail in the future but for now, I will just say I have a number of issues with the game but was surprised by its quality. Its a fun game that is one of the better 3DS sonic's, but it has a few issues holding it back from being a great game.

Keep at it man! I actually did something similar a while back (though I actually still have a few holes to fill in there actually, so I probably will have a minor revival when I can get around to it), but fortunately you seem to be getting more of a response (probably helps that you're way better at making OPs). So like I said, hopefully you can make it through!

I never saw this on Gaf before (and I was a lurker back in 2013!). Just quickly looking through your posts, you did a great job covering each game :).

Thank you for the feedback :D! Do you want me to include your retrospective in the OP? That way people can see your hard work and get a different perspective on the games :).

I got a lot more to cover (and I am lumping various Sega games into the mix now to pad-out the Dreamcast Era), but I look forward to it! Been a blast covering these games so far :).
