[Destructoid] Leaked photo of NX controller?

Damn already?! LOL.

I'm all for innovation, but I don't think I like physical joysticks that cover part of the screen.

Haptic feedback?

Still crap.
I was a skeptic of haptic feedback until I tried it on the Steam Controller. It does take getting used to, but I love the trackpads on the controller and the customizations they offer to the player. I have no problem using them as a dpad, mouse or buttons. Now I am not sure how it would be on a glass surface, but on the trackpads it feels and responds wonderfully.

Would be very strange if NX used, if going for mobile chips, something older than a Snapdragon 820 that has just launched and is fabbed at the more efficient 14nm process. Well, but this is Nintendo after all, who knows.

What was the frame rate of that UE 4 demo on a Snapdragon 800/810?.

Just a reminder...

That's incredibly vague and does not actually mean anything.

It could be a scrapped prototype. Which is definitely something that Nintendo would not want exposed.

e: I would not take this comment at face value because it is intentionally cryptic and seems designed to make people freak out. It reminds me of when lupinko was talking in riddles leading up to the reveal of UMvC3 and everyone was making wild assumptions and losing their shit.

Not sure if this has been posted yet but the image on the screen is from about 6 seconds into this tech demo.

Great spot whoever it was. So either this fake is god tier when it comes to detail or NX is nicely powerful and has some sexy tech going on wit the controller.

Colour me cautiously-hyped.

If this also doubles as the controller for playing the system on your TV, can you imagine not being able to feel any face buttons? Fuck that.

Well I'm IN for the most innovative controller ever.

Imagine a game of Find Mii where you have to tilt the controllers gyroscope to reveal the Mii hidden underneath one of the sticks.

My only question would be why use UE Mobile to demo a console for what appears to be an ovalized Vita. Even if the console has a more robust ARM I feel like Nintendo/UE would want a more grown-up demo for that.
Well, if we look at it from a business perspective, Epic's growth path for UE4 is convincing Japanese handheld developers to jump on board, so presumably their primary interest would be in making their engine work well on the handheld.

If they put their efforts into that, and this is a console that they have low expectations for, it would be simplest to just port the same demo over to show that UE4 works on the system.

You instantly sell the idea of "You can make handheld games that scale up to the console if you want." while also having to spend less resources working over two demos this early in the game. It's at 60 FPS as well so anyone who wants to target that framerate can see it runs sufficiently.

Or maybe the console is based on mobile parts and thus isn't especially powerful, and the mobile demo was more suited. There are a lot of potential scenarios.

And yeah, it could just be a handheld.

Still, not better than proper buttons. haptic is rumble 2.0.

So can the screen not show the whole picture or what?

There's something way off with the lighting and shadows as well. It looks like it was an offscreen picture taken from another device and pasted onto the supposed NX device.

Another thing that bothers me about the NX Photo is that the picture gives no indication via reflections that the free form display is covered in glass, which to my knowledge is a requirement of Sharp's FFD tech. There would be at least some reflection evident in the photo if that was what we were looking at.

Jesus. The cropping!

e3Hnygp.png

Considering that 1/3rd of the screen is going to be covered by thumbs, the usable field of view is pitifully tiny. I can't see this being real. One you think that a tech demo would use a wider fov to emphasise the benefits of the ultra wide screen, not give us postage-stamp-o-vision that's cropped not only vertically and but also horizontally.

It's not real. There is absolutely no way anybody would think this would be a good idea.
At least with WiiU there was some method to the madness (tablets are the future? We'll just stick one onto the controller!).

This though? Nahhh fam, not a chance.

Seeing that Unreal tech demo video, it is concerning that the image in the NX photo seems to be stretched out, rather then the 'middle area' being the full screen with the rest being a bigger fov. Like this:

URNMiYk.jpg

I doubt a dev would waste their time configuring what is likely just a hardware showcase to take advantage of the system's features. Save that work for their own games.

I also think the "leaker" just used the video as their image source, and that's why it's simply stretched out with no real effort, so there's that.

Iwata talked about using an iOS and Android approach, meaning a single architecture/os that can be used on multiple form factors a la iPhone/iPad/Air/Pro/Watch never mind the myriad of Android form factors (S7/Edge/Note from Samsung alone) so we could in theory see many different approaches from Nintendo. The main problem being, they probably couldn't just drop and use free form displays on a whim as I'm sure it isn't free to use resource wise in regards to the extra screen estate and could cause fragmentation funnily enough not unlike Android.

Actually considering the nature of the demo and how expensive the chip is, I'd say this is a handheld, unless you're in to $250 controllers.

Is that image not moving though? Could be a few seconds out if it's zooming through that landscape or something?

Edit: Or its just a tech demo slapped on the devkit. So isn't necessarily tweaked to take advantage of the extra screen space perhaps?

I knew those were some UE4-ass rocks, lol.
Was looking at the UE4 tech demo and I skipped over that one because everyone kept saying it was the controller and the thumbnail is a house.

Since AMD is said to be making the processor for the console, the fact this is (supposedly) running Qualcomm's demo for SD800 and up could give some SLIGHT indication the pictured device is the handheld, powered by an ARM chip.

Mhhh, I'm not sure, do you think thic can be real? I think it's strange they are uscing a tech demo that you can find on youtube. For Wii U they made a new tech demo if I remember well.

But... Why?! Why? Why?

Nintendo, just... I don't get it. I was fully on board with the Wii and Wii U concepts, but this?

Fantastic gameplay opportunities such as:
-"Shit, I didn't see that from off-screen projectile because my thumb/palm was covering it!"
-"Damn, I didn't see that enemy sniper in the top right because I was pressing the top right on-screen button!"
-"Where the fuck do we put the minimap now?!"

Nevermind this would make for the worst display method for Nintendo's legacy library ever conceived. You either play with half resolution in a rectangle in the center, or enjoy having all the corners cut off in zoom mode.

Oh and game journoz, you can have a headstart on "Nintendo is cutting corners" headlines in 3,2,1...go!

This seems more like really bad game design ideas :) You really should let the developers just surprise you instead of thinking about bad game design options .

If this is handheld then a lot of the complaints about wasted screen space are much more valid. If it was a secondary screen it wouldn't matter as much. Not to mention the battery life for this has to be atrocious.

what type of analog sticks are those? They look odd.

Good post from FourthStorm 10 pages back (or so) about potential candidate for the nubs

This thread is huge and it has probably been brought up, but the sticks look like they could use the Touchence tech.

And yes, the bezel is quite nice. While many posters here seem to fear the lack of buttons, I think once it is fully explained, it is something that many people would be compelled to try. Especially if haptics are a go.
