NX Controller Rumor [Up5: Original was fake, and thus this is too]

Maybe they'll make attachment cradles with button pads on them. Still, seems like an odd shape that's probably too small for meaningful touch input.

You mean, I'll have to play Monster Hunter on this? Without buttons?...

This could be great as a handheld if they use haptic a to let you locate buttons as well as sensing a press and providing force feedback.

How I imagine Nintendo's engineers discussed this:

Engineer 1: "Hey the Wii U flopped. I wonder why?"
Engineer 2: "It must be the buttons! It's obviously not the touchscreen"
Engineer 1: "Brilliant! Let's just make a touchscreen controller instead!"

This thing will probably focus on being as energy efficient as possible. Expect a weaker console than PS4 and XONE.

I have to say, all the negativity about the touch controls really does sound like an old person yelling at the damn kids to get off their lawn.

While, generally speaking, I do prefer physical buttons, if a game plays well with touch controls, I see no reason we shouldn't be willing to give it a go. I hear the same bitching about Valve's controller when honestly the thing is pretty damn amazing (Not for all things, but it does so much more than any standard controller for PC gaming), but people won't give it the time of day because of the touch controls. It's all pretty unfair without actually trying it.

I think the same here. I too am skeptical, but we shouldn't be decrying it just yet.

No 3rd party game is going to be designed with this in mind. That's a whole segment of games, gone.

Yes yes... Pissing off the majority of the consumer base that gives a shit about your brand is 'yelling at the clouds'.

Yeah, some games might play very well with the touch controls. But like their last two ill-conceived gimmicks, I have little faith that this is going to end well for them. Their track record is not very good at this point.

The unveiling will be interesting. I don't know what to think right now. Let's see how Nintendo presents it all, top to bottom.

Miyamoto must really have had no input on this thing, unless he changed his opinions on buttons being necessary.I can't imagine Nintendo releasing a controller like this and still expecting to get great third party support, but we'll see. We don't have all the details or any confirmation.

Would that really reflect from all the way over from the street?

Also the username of the poster is finnish (which the keyboard layout also matches).

Unless the nx is literally running android it's a fight they lost about five years ago (wiiu did wonders) People already have devices and ecosystems they are content with. Adding a more complicated than touch screen device input isn't going to help them at all.

This and alieanating the rest of the "old" gamers with this supposed controller doesn't seem smart.

And you don't trust Nintendo to fine tune controls and cameras for their games they design specifically for that controller? I mean that's like the one thing they are good at, perfecting the feel of controls.

If a developer wants to use physical buttons I'm sure they can opt for a Pro controller. Zelda NX will probably allow a Pro controller considering it's releasing on the Wii U too...

All that tells me is that this is a weak idea, and one that will be as poorly supported as the Wii U was in terms of actual execution of the core concept.

I hope Nintendo found a way to recreate substantial tactile feedback on that screen to simulate button presses, or this controller is officially worthless for me for 99% of the genres I play. There has yet to ever be a device for which touch was a suitable replacement for a button press.

The HDMI cable in the first picture looks positioned as if it's just been disconnected from an HDMI out on the device. If it has that, and no buttons, then I'm guessing this (if real) is the handheld, rather than the home console pad.
Nope, the plug that goes into the top is much wider than a typical HDMI port (as shown by the white controller leak). The HDMI cable was likely for the laptop.

How can anyone think this when Sony is clearly showing that a market for a traditional game console is alive just as much as it ever was

If premium consoles are a waste of money how on earth is Nintendo going to convince kids who already have an iPhone and iPad that can get games for free or 2 bucks each, to buy a several hundred dollar console that controls like an iPhone with games that cost 60$ each

Thank you, was about to post the same thing.

My nieces and nephews love their Ipad games but they also have PS4's & Wii U's for big games.

As a console controller it just looks like a newer version of the gamepad. Unless it does something extraordinary, I still don't get why Nintendo wants us looking at a small controller screen instead of at a large hd tv.

IMAGES THAT PURPORT to show at least one piece of Nintendo’s forthcoming “NX” game machine appeared on Reddit Wednesday morning, closely matching a game system design shown in a patent filed by Nintendo in December.

The patent described a quite unique vision of a game machine: An elliptical display showed an oval-shaped game image, with two analog joysticks protruding up through the display. In 2014, it was reported that Nintendo had teamed up with Sharp, its longtime game hardware partner, to use the company’s new “free-form” LCD display technology that could create screens in a variety of different shapes; the report suggested that Nintendo would create “a doughnut-shaped screen with a hole in the middle.”

Too much uncertainty coming from the very person posting the images. How am I to trust this when he doesn't trust himself?
