Rumor: Mass Effect Andromeda is about Colonialism

Considering Bioware's attitude towards colonialism in SW:tOR is usually to have the player slaughter hordes of enemies some of whom are explicitly named as "savages", I wouldn't really have much faith in them handing the theme well.

That's pretty badass.

They will probably drive this into two directions.

The first one where you are Jesus and came to make seemingly endless compromise for the sake of peace.

The second one where you are some Space Marine that fights for the glory of mankind and views foreign life fundamentally beneath your existense.

Both of these will contain high-school levels of logic accompanied by red herrings and strawmans.

IE: Mass Effect

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
What if I dont give a shit about humanity but all the other aliens?

.

I mean if it's helping the Korgans out: Cool. If it's just them doing more politics where the council trollfaces you and ignores your "grave threat": No thanks.

"the relays were destroyed effectively keeping all aliens around Earth"

*patch*

"The relays were destroyed effectively keeping all aliens around Earth, but then somebody plugged them back in so it was ok actually they can get back home"

They weren't destroyed, they were simply damaged/deactivated. It's not nearly the same as them blowing up like in the non-extended cut endings.

It looks like the story is going for a Battlestar galactica route.

Edit:

This is my concern as well.

The people who made The Old Republic are not the same people who make Mass Effect.

Some interesting posibilities here. Hopefully there will be several separate native species where each one needs to be handled differently. This way there can be several different dilemmas with colonization that have to be adressed.

I really hope they can avoid the low hanging fruits though, like taking the stance that colonialism always is bad because it has historically negative connotations, or going for moral relativism in relation to the new species and their existance. Id be fine with those virws being represented by individuals in the game, but I would be dissapointed if the game was trying to preach a shallow moral viewpoint about something like imperialism, cultural or otherwise, as the lesson to take away with you.

I'm all down for space Heart of Darkness. Whether or not Bioware can accurately reflect that through writing is another thing entirely.

While that would be an interesting concept to explore in a space setting, don't count on the Bioware writers to deliver beyond the 'humans are special snowflakes' theme.
Plus, people are going to be too busy arguing who's the best alien waifu.

Given their recent track record, I have no faith in Bioware being able to tackle a topic like this with anything approaching the finesse required.

Then again, given the amount of people responding positively to this image, it might not even matter if they did do a good job, as any even halfway subtle reproach of colonialism will probably be lost on the wider audience.

Then I hope there's an ending that allows me to let the indigenous race(s) win.

Agreed. It'd be hilariously tone-deaf to let the white guy protagonist be the colonialist then the saviour of conquered people's, if this is the route they're going with.

Bold move on the plot. I like.

Omg this could be super interesting politically

I'm not convinced that Bioware has the chops to pull this off from an intelligent and interesting perspective. In fact; I think it will only be slightly more elegant than this.

Andromeda Sheppard meets the "aliens". Andromeda Sheppard has a decision to make!

a) Give aliens galactic small pox

b) Help aliens build a space barn

I can't wait to experience Bioware tackling the complexities of colonialism!

Splitting this out to its own thread.

Also here's the ZBrush model of the Pathfinder people may have missed:

Those shoulder pads kinda ruin the design.

I wouldn't worry about anything bad happening, it's a Bioware game so every quest will just have some "hidden" (i.e. super obvious) way to please all parties and be everyone's hero.

I honestly couldn't care less for the human politics in these games. I dunno why but it just bores me silly when we have better routes we could be exploring. One of my biggest gripes with original trilogy was how after ME1 instead of humans being the underdog all of a sudden practically everything is on us. I liked being a smaller part in a bigger universe.

Ugh.

That helmet render feels like even more of a 'throwback' than the ME3 stuff with a full EVA aspect to it.

I miss the hardsuits from ME1, even if they were kind of bland in terms of 'uniqueness'.

Yeah, exactly. The armor design is basically just American football player design these days. In terms of uniqueness, it just mimics the exact same trends we see in other sci-fi games and their armor designs. You could've told me that the armor render was from Battlefield, Call of Duty, or whatever near-future sci-fi setting, and I would've believed you.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Like others, I'm not sure Bioware has the writing and presentation to pull this off based on their last few games they've made. Not saying its a given but I've been less than enthused about their scifi stuff after the ME games. So many things in there seemed like they were designed by a 12 year old for other 12 year olds. A race of all blue women who happen to look 95% like human super models and can somehow have sex with species from entirely different planets and produce offspring.

I mean, this definitely says something, but not about Mass Effect.

For reference, Battlefield armor:

In a game about choices, I'm surprised they're still going the full cartoony evil vs full cartoony good route.

Unless you're an old British imperialist and think colonialism is still good.

Iirc the armor design in Andromeda is based on what people could realistically actually wear.

I'm going to reserve judgement on this until I have played through the game but boy do I hope they've done their research and know what they're doing.

Chuckled at the fact that it's explicitly referred to as a third person shooter right there in their description. RPG? What's an RPG?

Well, sure hope this is only a rumor then.

Are we sure that other MW Aliens are coming along for the trip? Because you wouldn't know that with the constant focus on Humans.

In what world is Avatar subtle? It's Dances with Wolves with blue people.
