It was born of the PS+, made men by the PS+, undone by the PS+.
Sony does not pay server costs? Why the fuck am i paying for online multiplayer.
LmaoSee, Sony IS a legit threat to PC gaming
Lol. While the hype from the PS+ release certainly helped a lot, it wouldn't have "come and gone" in the "sea of titles". Game would still be pretty sucessful either way.
Eh, even the devs say RL was special
Again, they knew it'd be big enough that ps+ was backed out of almost, and sony wanted it badly enough they upped their offer.
This game would have been successful anyways.

.If it wasn't free on PS+, the game would not be as popular as it is today.
Maybe, but look at Stardew Valley and Undertale. If it wasn't free on PS+, the game would not be as popular as it is today.

No where near this successful. Sure, people can think they'd sniff out a good game, but I doubt the word would have gotten out quick enough to be successful out of the gate.
I mean, look at these threads. Alpha open to everyone: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=846242
The beta that went as good as open to everyone: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1035475
None of that screamed a game that was in high demand. Maybe if some big streamers picked it up and talked about it, it could do well. But the buzz it got from people playing the game on Plus did wonders.
Because MS didn't on 360 and got people to pay, so Sony thought they were being silly turning down free money.
did you even read the article?
My heart breaks for some of the incredible titles that have bombed on Steam.
Truth to be told, PS+ success was the best marketing for this game. Basically:
"Marketing cost can kill your game if it doesn't sell".
Basically, it's a virtuous circle. PS+ raised awarness which led to strong sales on PC, which led to even more sale on PS4.
I wonder how much sony paid them to put it on PS+ if it didnt even cover the server costs for it. Is it a fixed amount or an amount per download?
You know, PC games can still sell well through word-of-mouth. In fact, it's the best system for that. Look at Stardew Valley, look at Undertale etc.
Obviously the game wouldn't have sold as much if it wasn't on PS+, but people acting like it would have sold like shit if it wasn't for it are sticking their heads in the sand.
I'm not sure it's people sticking their heads in the sand, or if it's just that they're remembering that Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars had nowhere near the same reception as Rocket League. Hell, a ton of people didn't even know Rocket League was a sequel to something.
Yeah, it's this thread title/OP that is kind of misrepresenting the story, really.
