The High-end VR Discussion Thread (HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Playstation VR)

I love how Valve provides a sdk that is only usable for their store, Steam (kind of like the sdk of Oculus is only for the Rift), which provokes conflicts with other versions of the game sold in other stores (and that way promote only using their own store for distribution), and the blame is in the other stores. And I thought the Apple fans were brainwashed...

That is completely false. OpenVR is not tied to Steam.

EDIT: I didn't realize you were talking about SteamWorks.

SteamWorks is obviously only intended to work with Steam services, but can interoperate with other networks, we have already seen that with Rocket League.

Space Pirate Trainer -Early release trailer.

This is one of my most anticipated games for next week. VR arcade and looks like a lot of fun.

Space Pirate is going to be huge. It's a ton of fun and the perfect game for VR at this point in time. Uses everything the Vive has to its advantage which no other game platform can do, encourages competition yet is very simple which allowed the dev to get it out with very limited time. Exactly like Geometry Wars or Devil Daggers.

Wait how does that work? I realise you need the oculus ask to get the headset working, but underneath it's still a PC game. Surely icons aren't forcing their own XBL style MP walled garden??

If you play the version bought on Oculus Home it's going to be running on Oculus' network with their friend's list and such.

We will hopefully be able to run the 1.3 SDK version of PCars from Steam on Oculus soon and then we will be able to play with Steam peeps.

It uses steamworks and Oculus won't support anything Steam related so its a crappy situation. Hopefully they come around and change their stance on things like this. I wonder how games from companies like Ubisoft will be handled.

Just got updated to 1.3 on steam. Hopefully a Vive/SteamVR update isn't too far down the road.

Well I've decided to cancel my Rift pre-order and join the Vive train.

As a DK1 and DK2 owner, I'm really disappointed. I originally was going to order the Vive but backed off after the December delay. I just didn't have confidence in HTC even being a company in a few years.

I'd rather wait a month more than deal with the Rift drama now.

So I put up my old gfx card up for sale and it sold. I can get a 970 for like 100 ish bucks now with the difference. Would a 3570k be an ok processor for running the games? The oculus says it's not good enough but the steam test said my old GPU was the bottleneck and the processor is fine. Or should I get a different card? I know EVGA does the trade up program if they release a new card within 90 days. I didn't think it'd sell but now I have options.

If only I hadn't thought I needed to save $200 and that when the Rift came on time it would satisfy me enough to not be too jealous of the Vive. Now I just got paid and am willing to pay the extra money with how bad this Oculus launch is going.

Will be fine. Get a 970 that'll overclock well if you can.

If a driver were released in the next few days that let the Vive work with all the oculus rift software, I wonder what that would do to the preorder situation.

Oh, I even haven't thought about the competitive part of it.

I, for one, would actually switch to the Vive.

I kinda think Oculus will do everything to update their SDK to 1.3.1 to block that driver, even though Palmer said "people can do that".

I've got a 970 and 3570k, gets a 7 on the Steam VR test with the latest drivers on Windows 10.

This is one of the main thoughts I had yesterday before deciding to put in a backup Vive pre-order. If someone figured it out next week or any time before my Rift ships, I'd probably cancel it.

It really doesn't matter, Valve will still be a company and the lighthouse tech is not owned by HTC. I wouldn't be surprised for LG or someone to make Vive hardware as well.

Ocean Rift is out for the Oculus Rift for 9,99$.

As well as Apollo 11VR on Steam and Oculus, 14,99$:

Werent these free on DK2 or you also had to pay?

I am not quite sure how I feel about paying for "Techdemos".

Apollo was just that on DK2, a demo. It only showed a couple scenes. The final version has a lot more content as is obvious from the trailer. I can't wait to support them with my cash because the demo was incredible and VR education is going to be huge.

EDIT: purchased!

I think a 3570k with a 970 should be fine.

I'm using my Rift CV1 with an FX-8350, which is below the recommended spec and weaker than a 3570k, and an R9 390 and I haven't had any trouble maintaining 90fps in the stuff I've tried so far.

I think the Firestrike score of 9000+ is a better indicator.

Yes it was. And no, both had demos but neither were free in their full versions. I have the full version of Ocean Rift on Gear VR and I love it.

It was made by LemonGremlin.

It has about ten different environments that have varying amounts of wildlife and places to explore with some fun easter eggs. It's more of an experience than a game, but it's an experience I use to demo the Gear VR to most people I show it to. Usually the manatees or if they're feeling more adventurous the shark cage.

I haven't seen the full version of Apollo 11 but I've been waiting for it. Now if only I had monies (or if only they'd sort out cross buy which is apparently happening at some point).

How come in all the trailers for VR I've seen when you look down you don't see your body? And you usually just have hands and not full arms? Just curious.

Seeing a body that isn't your own is really weird so sometimes seeing nothing is better. Also, that avoids the weird headless body thing that can happen if you drift away from where the in game body is.

Ok thanks. I haven't gotten to try it yet but I always thought the floating hands thing was weird.

There's only three points to track. Inverse kinematics do a pretty good job at filling in the rest, but if you aren't doing what the game shows your body doing, it breaks immersion.

Here's a really cool IK demonstration video from the Hover Junkers devblog. That's just what the other players see though.

yeah, problem is if you move your hand there's different ways you can move your arm to get your hand in some position, so unless you can track your elbow you're going to feel a disconnect as your vr arm may not be moving the same way you're actually moving it.

I couldnt wait a month and just got a vive pre, will get here on Monday! I guess i'll get to compare the pre to the retail vive model, can't believe I'll be using a vive before the rift, oculus has to get it together, this is heartbreaking to watch.

Project CARS - PC Patch 10.1 - Oculus Rift VR support on the Steam platform

So with the freebies on Oculus store and Ethan Carter and pCARS on Steam, I literally have no game that I need to buy from Oculus when my headset arrives sometime this month.

If my headset arrives sometime this month...

Why not make the Oculus store your primary storefront? Just like alll PC enthusiasts with $2000 VR-ready machines, I install everything to the default C: path.

Exactly like back in 1990. Wait, no, I had discrete drive letter partitions for my 286's 40MB HDD so that I could fit more things on it and use partial doublespace compression to extend what could be installed at any given time. But that's just recently when I was five years old, so it's not like software development has had time to catch up to typical PC enthusiast use cases yet.

Oculus store is real cute but as someone who is planning on getting a Rift soon I see no reason to not buy off Steam. Well, except for those few Oculus exclusives. There is nothing too intriguing on that front outside of the freebies and Chronos.

I think I will stick with Steam.

The Vive is so freaking amazing. I'm in love with it. I was in Altspace VR when I started getting nervous from people surrounding me. It really felt like I was there. That's when I realized how truly immersive room scale is. It's really freaking amazing. You're all gonna love it! The wait was more than worth it. I didn't feel motion sick at all. If you have VR legs at all you're good! Brookhaven was too scary for me. I love zombie games but it was way too much for me in VR. I loved every moment of my time with it.

That's good to hear. Since I kind of just decided to jump on the VR train over the past couple says it's weird thinking about buying something so expensive without ever trying it. Putting a lot of faith in it. Plus I kinda want to be one of the first people around to have it.

Brookhaven? Is this an Altspace VR thing?
