Genuinely enjoying the show (for the most part) while I'm watching it, but it also doesn't really stick in terms of holding my interest once the credits roll if you know what I mean. Like, once an episode is over that's it. Not particularly interested in next week's preview or what the various reviewers have to say and I don't really spend any time considering the show until the next episode airs. But while it's happening I like it, so there's that.

Now that I am considering it, I think the performances are good pretty much across the board and the show can actually be quite funny, but the stakes seem off and maybe that mucks up the balance a bit. Like, it's ostensibly about the workings of a record label, and that aspect of the show works and is interesting on its own, but then they also have this underlying murder thing going on and the tone and rhythm is like something out of the back half of Goodfellas, which then bleeds over into the more mundane stuff and it seems a little out of whack.

I dunno.

It was an improvement on last week, mostly down to Romanek's flair, the scene with Devon and Warhol was superbly staged as was Lester's dream sequence. But the writing, man the fucking writing. The argument in the bedroom getting interrupted by a kid is pretty inexcusable for a daytime soap much less a prestige HBO show. This is so disappointing.

I watched all four episodes over the last week or so and yeah the Devon / Warhol scene really stood out. The way it was shot with her black and white image in the foreground was really striking. Olivia Wilde also did really well with the scene.

Also thought the way they shot Richie at the New York Dolls concert was really well done. How the camera focused on him and everyone else blended together. Beyond those two scenes and the awesome intro, there isn't too much to be excited about out of five hours of TV.

New episode tonight:
He In Racist Fire

Richie visits a relative; Devon plays the vixen at dinner with Richie, Hannibal and Cece; Kip faces a dilemma; Clark gets a new job; Richie is inspired to name his new label.

Holy shit that Hannibal/Dev scene. My girlfriend stopped the ep and asked if I was okay while we were watching it because apparently I had the face of cold rage lol.

This show is getting better as it goes. I think the two hour premiere really hurt a lot of people's opinions on it, it was way too sparse and drawn out for a good first impression.

ALSO HOLY SHIT
BOWIE IS IN THE NEXT EPISODE. I was just thinking how much I wanted to see him in this.

Had the same feeling and fuck Hannibal for being petty about it. That's the dudes wife. The whole scene was a mans worse nightmware along with the fallout

Did anyone else laugh uncontrollably when Buck attacks Richie from behind after they think he's already dead in episode 1? That fucking music...

New episode tonight:
Cyclone

Devon seeks refuge with old friends at the Chelsea Hotel; Richie falls into a deeper well of drugs and depravity; Kip tries to recruit a new lead guitarist for the Nasty Bits; Zak allows his emotions to surface.

Decided to watch tonight since Bobs Burgers and Last Man on Earth wasnt on.. could only make it 20 minutes in before I had to turn it off. This show is derivative garbage and giving it a second season is criminal

Man, yesterday's episode was not great. Just a bit of a slog to get through... Richie trying to track down his wife is not particularly interesting or exciting. And was that reveal at the end supposed to be a twist or something? Because I felt like it was pretty obvious from the very beginning. Only stuff I really kind of liked were the scenes with Jagger.
I was willing to give this show the benefit of the doubt after its somewhat uneven start considering the folks involved with it, but I have to say it hasn't exactly gotten much better since then. I'm going to stick with it at least for the rest of the season because I'm a bit of a completionist, but it's not easy for me to recommend this to people.
At this point I kind of just wish they kept going with Boardwalk Empire because I enjoyed that show a lot more, and I feel like it was better in almost every department.

Yeah, I'm not really feeling this show. The music and the visuals are great, but it's kind of a drag to sit through. It's so boring.

I'm especially annoyed that Winter rushed the final season of Boardwalk Empire to get to this series. I don't think it was worth it at all.

Is there a more punchable lead on any show airing right now than Richie Finestra?

I'd watch an entire episode that was just a line of people kicking the shit out of him one-by-one. And hey, that would be the first good episode of the show.

I can't decide how I feel about this show but I know one thing for sure...Richie's life stresses me the fuck out haha. I also hate the music interludes. So unnecessary and good lawd Olivia Wilde

i was a huge fan of the actor in Boardwalk but he's pretty much unbearable here. i know a lot of it is how the character's written but he dials it up to 11 in every scene... feel like i need a bottle of excedrin to make it through an episode

(the show should be about Andy Warhol because the actor is much more entertaining to watch than Bobby Cannavale and I feel like the avant garde art scene of the 70s would make for a more interesting primary setting over the music industry)

Boardwalk Empire really needed at least one more season, with the last two each being the full 12 episodes that we'd come to expect from a season of Boardwalk Empire. It was a far better show than Vinyl, even just 6 episodes in, and I agree that it wasn't worth the trade.

Damn their Bowie was good.

He really did look a whole lot like Bowie, I'll give them that!

This week's ep was absolutely terrible. Cant believe they ham fisted all the Bowie stuff and had the balls to dedicate the episode to him.

I really like this show. Not sure why it's getting so much hate. I just want to see more of the Nasty Bits though, I'd like them to spend more time in NY venues finding good bands too.

I imagine once the record label starts picking up the series will get a lot more interesting.

Exactly my sentiment. Really weird episode.

Back when it was announced that that Boardwalk Empire was ending and with a shortened season at that, I was sad, but I thought that Vinyl could interesting, considering the talent involved and the time period. Now, not so much. I'll probably stick with it until the end of the season as well, but unless it picks up, I'm unlikely to watch season 2.

Completely agree with this. The time jump left so much story untold or dropped altogether. I know that Boardwalk Empire was never the hit HBO hoped it would be, but I absolutely loved it. The time period, the music, the characters, the attention to detail. It's one of my favourite TV shows of all time.

I got tired watching cokehead Richie doing stuff in this episode. I hope he at least lowers his consumption so he can talk and act like a sane person. One episode of Richie craziness was enough for me.

I like the show just fine, though I'm two episodes behind.

Nitpick, but I think one of the dumb things that irks me most about the show is the ridiculous "character does line of coke, whips head backward, wide-eyed staring and moaning at the ceiling" cliche. It's like when someone is badly pretending that they're drinking, and it happens several times per episode.

This weeks episode it happens like 500 times.

That definitely started getting on my nerves lol

For a show about music, you would think HBO would fork over the cash to get original versions of songs.

FX does it for the People Vs. OJ Simpson. I wonder if it's just cost prohibitive. It's not like they are buying the rights to use original Beatles studio recordings.

How has this progreessed?

Watched the first 3 episodes but found it uninteresting and dropped it.

I might pick it up if it gets better but it seems so boring, the first 3 episodes were that way at the very least.

It hasn't gotten any better than the first 3 episodes.

It hasn't really improved. Actually I think it's gotten worse.

I'm always surprised when a show uses an original Beatles song in an episode, considering how expensive they are.

I haven't seen the latest episode yet but if they did pay money for using an original Beatles song that's baffling considering the amount of shitty cover songs they've used so far.

Yep, the show opens up with one of their more famous songs. Maybe they blew the whole music budget on this seemingly unimportant scene.
