Final Fantasy IX PC/Mobile |OT| How did the source code survive?

Personally this is pretty important to me, so I'm considering a refund until they fix this. What a bummer

Same here. I'll give it the 90 min I can still play before I can't refund anymore, try if it's playable with just the mouse or possibly a m+kb combo, but if not, I'll refund for now.

Just ridiculous. I really don't think I'm even expecting much at all from the port with this, d-pad and stick movement should always be two separate things.

FF8 had analog support.

Ahh, well I didn't at the time.

Thinking about it, I can't even remember when I switched to a DualShock, or where I even got one from. Did it come with a game? I doubt I'd have got one seperately..

First time I'm playing the game without PS1 polygon jitter (emulation can't fix that). That already makes it so much more nicer looking.

I really hope we can get a mod now to restore the original background art. For the ones that are lost for good, maybe a team of artist can work on recreating them.

I'm worried this will be complicated by this being a mobile port, though. I remember reading that FF4 on PC (the DS version) isn't easily modable (to replace textures) because it's just a port of the mobile game.

There's just a handful there and they're not even animated or layered. I can say it's simply impossible.

At least cheatengine's speed hack seems to work with the game.

Which really doesn't matter cause holy shit, how is it even possible for the mouse controls to be so unresponsive? Have to click twice or thrice all the time for it to register

So it's either get used to d-pad controls or go back to original now

Can't believe the day is finally here.

Was hoping the game stayed at least in the slightly positive range on Steam ratings but it's doing way better than I thought. 89% positive.

I've played 2 hours already, no issues so far. The game surprisingly supports d-input controller, I don't have to use additional 3rd party program for my controller.

Still waiting for that Waifu2xFilter mod, I hope they can release it.

This is a pretty good filter! It reconstructs details without adding annoying fake sharpness and contrast.

Game looks awesome in 4k DSR. Text boxes are super clear and nice. Backgrounds can be ugly but the character models are great. Not a bad deal on GMG + 20 Percent off coupon.

It runs well on my Surface Pro 3. Throttled i5 at 1.9 GHz and an integrated Intel 4400 GPU. So I can't imagine it having performance issues on too many systems.

Can someone confirm that using the touch screen works on a Surface Pro 3? I want to play the entire game in tablet mode.

Anyone tried to play this with an XBone controller? The slightest press of a button registers it as a double input.

Thinking I might have to play this on the keyboard:(

Oh why did they use the mobile UI? So they ported the game for iOS and Android and then spent 2 months getting that version to work on PC.

Might just hold off until I see mods people come out with...

edit: And no option to just increase battle speed a little bit more? No intro is nice, but having to turn the boost on/off all the time... eh.

I thought the Cloud Data option was to sync with Square Enix servers, but it looks like that's just how you activate Steam Cloud, which is dumb.

Do I really have to go there and "upload" my saved data every time (which is just copying the file to the appropriate folder) in order to have Steam Cloud sync it?

Every other FF does it automatically. I've reinstalled a few and my saves were there.

Is there any indication as to when it auto-saves, or is it literally just between screen changes in the strictest sense possible? Doesn't auto-save, say, between fights or anything like that?

Are there too many overt issues?

Depends on the player, really. It's not a terrible port - seems to run fine, controllers work to some extent etc. It's just the smaller things. Ugly and bloated mobile UI, unresponsive mouse controls, controller analog stick acts as another d-pad rather than an actual analog stick, seen some reports with people having problems with their controller's triggers cause the game doesn't realize they aren't digital on/off inputs. Stuff like that. Might turn you off, might not.

Personally I think I'll just try and get used to playing with a keyboard. Fuck you Silicon whatever Thailand etc, but IX is so good I'm willing to overlook this stuff, at least for now.

I can confirm that it doesn't work well--at least not natively. Right-click is your cancel button, which is cumbersome to perform on a Surface. There is no way to open the menu or press any other buttons. However, you can pair AutoHotkey with something like Artdock to create button overlays that execute keystrokes. Moving about, interacting with NPCs, and selecting things in combat (and the menu, if you can open it) works well, though.

Less of a hassle to just plug in a controller, though.

This needs to be a thing :/ .

I can't let people say "it looks awesome" when it literally looks like vomit currently.

Do we have any proof at all that the source code DID survive? I mean, even if it did... how useable would it really be? We're talking code that was built for a PS1 dev kit and may have even been written in pure machine code... It would undoubtedly have to be completely rewritten anyways.

In fact, design documents would likely have been much more useful for 'porting' than the actual original source in this case (unless the source code was heavily annotated)... And judging by the higher rendered cutscenes, it's likely that a lot of this stuff was properly archived unlike older games.

This is incorrect (as someone who works in dev). Design docs are rarely up to date and there's a ton of Devils in the details.

I'm wondering if they messed with some stuff (didn't pay attention to details), or maybe I'm imagining but I feel like my steal rate is a bit too good :p

Took me 15-20 tries to get Mage Masher, so it's not THAT much better at least lol

What's the best way to play this? Controller or K+M?

My xbox one controller seems to be too sensitive for this game. I slightly press A and it registers twice the input.

I think, and I am assuming here, that you are on Windows 10 and are experiencing the Win 10 XB1 controller bug.
