40 million PS4 shipped; PSN generates more revenue than all of Nintendo

Sony should really rethink forced subscription for online play, PSN is obviously big enough to generate profit without it now and as much as it increase their profit, it's also driving some users away on the long run, the same goes for MS.
Some is the keyword there. There are clearly enough people happy to pay for the sub...if I was running a sub system and generating this amount of revenue, I don't think I'd be in a hurry to drop it. Most of the sales probably come from digital sales, but the subs no doubt help.

Edit: well done, Sony.

Wow gratz Sony I guess.

Jesus, Sony is on a roll. Also, lol Nintendo. After the announcement of Zelda being delayed to 2017 and no NX at E3 to be stomped like this in the sales department is doing wonders for their image right now.

LMAO, Sony fans argued about that for well over 10 years, it's not going to happen especially with Sony now charging for online multiplayer.

There's too much money on the taple and it costs alot of money to run the service.

Sony really needs to chop or fix that damn mobile division. I swear it's the new TV division. Nothing but bleeding.

Yeah so Sony did over 4.5 Billion USD in digital revenue last year.

If that's not a MASSIVE eye opener for where the industry is headed I'm not sure what is

Excellent numbers. Their management of the PS4 has been remarkable. As long as they market the Neo correctly, they will have the potential of hitting 100m consoles this gen.

It comes down to two things:

1) How many people are driven away. If the number is < 10,000,000 then there's no chance of them dropping it. If the number is >10,000,000 then there's a real chance of them dropping it. I highly doubt there are over 10 million people who choose to avoid the PS4 specifically due to PS+.

2) What their competition is doing. If Microsoft drops the Xbox Live Gold requirement then Sony will absolutely have to rethink the PS+ requirement.

I remember when people thought the WiiU's tepid launch signaled the beginning of the end of the console industry, and the PS4/X1 were going to crater accordingly.

lol

The PS4 and XBO appear to be pretty front-loaded. Their start was impressive, but everything after that hasn't been particularly impressive. The PS4 is no PS2 and it will only match or beat the Wii by having a longer life.

Kinda a disappointing q4 when it comes to PS4 HW shipments tbh. Sell through of the PS4 is up in both US and Japan YoY, so i wonder why the shipment drop. Did they overship in Q3? Weak RotW/ Euro sales? PS4 slim replacement coming out soon?

The real question is tho, PSN > Steam? And a quick google search says yes! (Steam 2015 revenue was $3.5 billion)

It'll match the Wii with a standard 6 year life span.

Eh what now? Q3 was the holidays, of course they'd ship more then.

Somewhat hilarious reading this post right below that graph. Ps4 still tracking ahead of Ps2...

So Sony corp made $2.7B profit this year? How does that compare to the last few years?

So has Kaz really turned them around? I don't really follow this stuff.

EU and other regions - be it the Middle East, Asia, South America, etc..., are the key reasons the PS4 is outpacing the PS2 at this point. US sales are steady but far from amazing. Japan sales are what they are. PS4 really performed well in Europe and other areas. It's just a question of how long the pace will last.

Um, I think you're out of touch with what's what, here. Never mind that it, in no way, disproves the post you quoted.

They need to fix it, but exiting mobile isn't a super smart decision given the direction of consumer electronics (i.e. we're not moving back to stationary devices). Didn't Sony just open a new mobile gaming company, ForwardWorks?

2.3 million hardware over the last 3 months doesn't actually seem crazy high. How does this quarter compare to the same quarter in previous years?
