The Last of Us Sequel: Joel & Ellie again or NO Joel & Ellie again? | What about MP?

tl;dr at the bottom

Okay the first thing I want to say is: I don't want two threads of related topics floating around so this thread is going to serve to kill two birds with one stone, as in I want to cover two different topics about a hypothetical tlou sequel.

1. Story

First things first: I see people very divided about whether or not the sequel should pick up from Joel & Ellie's story. So that's what I want to get out of the way first. I might even ask a mod to attach a poll to really gauge what GAF thinks.

Do you want the story to pick up with where Joel & Ellie? If yes, where do you want it to take place? Perhaps right where they left off and then there's a time skip? Or should it already begin with a time skip? And...where should they go with it? I see people arguing that their story is wrapped up and simultaneously I see people saying that there's sooo much left to tell about these two characters since...
it is kinda sorta implied by the look on Ellie's face, particularly her eyes, that she knew Joel was lying.

Or, do you NOT want the sequel to have anything to do with Joel & Ellie and have it follow a narrative of completely different characters? If this is what you want, then you open up a lot of other possibilities. The direction I would take with it; if they do, is waaaay back in the beginning, that family that Tommy & co drove by on the road, I think it'd be interesting to see where they would end up. I've always actually wondered where these bystander characters go sometimes.

Or in that tunnel passage or whatever when they were with Sam & Henry. There were a group of survivors there with one who escaped right? They could follow that character too. Or it could take place somewhere away from where they are or in a completely different country, having absolutely nothing to do with Joel & Ellie location wise.

Do you also possibly want...well...they could pull a GTA5/Yakuza on us and have it start with Joel & Ellie or different characters, and then pick up later with the other respective characters coming and crossing paths with one another. I don't know about that but the story would have to really feel organic and sensible for that to happen. Often times imo shit like that feels forced.

2. Multiplayer

Now, on to the other topic. Multiplayer. Although most of tlou's acclaim and legacy comes with its fucking masterpiece of a campaign, I think most people underestimate how much of a dent it made regarding multiplayer as well. As I said in an LTTP thread, I know a guy who never ever eva eva eva fucks with single player in games. and tlou is his favorite game, ever. He LOVES the multiplayer, he tells me he's never played anything like that. That should be very telling to y'all, GAF.

You might as well call him a casual, I guess. But anyways, other than adding more than just 4 players per team, there's a few things I want out of a MP mode in tlou2. The first and most important thing is:

-a hardcore mode, with clickers right on the maps. For all game types. This is pretty much the only thing imo that made the mp in the original game feel a little disconnected with its single player mode. I got this idea from the walking dead season 4 midseason finale; the battle at the the prison. Once both sides started shooting at each other, a few minutes later it wasn't just each other they had to worry about, it was zombies. And the same should be said in tlou's universe's mp modes. There should be a hardcore mode where each team not only has to strategize about how to outdo the other time but how to keep each other safe from clickers. And it would still be fair game literally since the clickers would be a threat to both teams.

-POSSIBLY a coop mode, both campaign, and missions, and hell...maybe even splitscreen campaign. I know the last thing is least likely but I never hide from the fact that I'm a sucker for local mp. If tlour included a splitscreen campaign mode, I probably would've bought it day 1. but it was gifted to me. as it is, tlour is the best game I ever played but I'm probably never gonna play it again.

tl;dr

this statement is still relevant here: I don't want two threads of related topics floating around so this thread is going to serve to kill two birds with one stone, as in I want to cover two different topics about a hypothetical tlou sequel. First is:

-Do you or do not want Joel & Ellie to be a part of the sequel? If you do, should it be all about them, or should there be another set of protagonists/deuteragonists in the mix that catches up with them? If you don't, then go ahead and explain in full detail how you think it's best for them to do a story for tlou2.

-Did you hate or love the mp in tlou? If you loved it to the max do you think there should be anything added in the sequel's mp or do you think there's still room for shit to add? All I'll say is, if for nothing else, I need them to include a hardcore mode for all game types that puts clickers right on the maps for players to deal with along with their opponents. If you hated it, would you start from scratch from the ground up or what would you do? Or would you just say fuck an mp mode for this game?

What do you think?

I don't want to see any of the main characters from TLOU1. They suffered enough and earned their respite, I don't need to see them being all miserable and shit again for 15 hours.

No Joel or Ellie.

Same MP with typical improvements. Absolutely no "Clickers attack you suddenly!" bullshit nonsense. I want my game to remain totally tactical and competitive, meaning PvP only. Add in a co-op mode for those wanting a PvE.

Damn Artisan, I just saw you want Clickers in MP :p

It'd totally ruin the game for me. It'd be the worst thing to have a tactical game where you're the last man standing, trying to survive, only to have A.I come up and mix things up for everyone. I enjoy LoU MP for being reserved and predictable.

I also would keep it 4v4

if they return, i want ellie playable only as i feel that fits into the narrative as well.
by the end of tlou we saw joel in a different light as did ellie.

Just as we saw in metal gear solid 2 to fully witness a characters strengths and flaws you need to view them from the outside.

Mainly an Ellie story, possible cameos/mentions of Joel. There is nothing wrong with continuing the story of previous characters as long as the writing and plot is well done.

Ellie travels to not-Spain to rescue the President's Daughter.

Ellie with new characters or new characters completely. They could try asymmetric co-op, ala Revelations 2. I think that could be an interesting idea.

TLOU is compelling because of Joel and Ellie, not because it is some massively original take on the post apocalypse, so a sequel without them (or at least Ellie) would be pointless.

If they make a sequel, I think it should be you playing as a grown up Ellie.

Can't believe the no Ellie replies, unless it just so happens that lots of people are suddenly miraculously immune, she's key to the larger story. Not to mention she's one of the strongest female characters in the medium's history, that's not something you just want to throw away.

I definitely want them to explore Ellie'e character more. Maybe do a time skip where Ellie is now in her early 20s and living with her girlfriend/partner away from Joel, and there is a lot of friction between them, which is explored through flashbacks, and how Ellie found out Joel lied to her and they drifted apart. Maybe Ellie is one of the Fireflies now, and on a new mission, and throughout the course of the game, you see Ellie and Joel mending their relationship, and maybe Joel even dying or something. The game could have Ellie's partner as one of the NPC team members, or even three NPCs like in Uncharted 4.

I'm not a storyteller, so that idea probably sucks, but yeah, I'd love for Naughty Dog to explore Joel and Ellie's relationship and the repercussions of that big lie. There's more to be told.

I don't care for TLOU multiplayer or most multiplayer modes.

I'd much prefer they focus on new characters. If they don't go that route, then I'd hope to play as older Ellie with Joel as a minor cameo.

To be honest though Straley and Druckmann could probably do whatever they want and make it really good.

To be fair, new compelling characters can be created. The side story of Ish was pretty compelling to me already.

Edit: OP, I don't really care. I would be fine with either, because I have trust in Druckmann/Straley.

I'm dissapointed that a new TLOU is going to happen to begin with, but for fucks sake please atleast give a new setting and characters

The character arc and ending of TLOU was so perfect, I don't want to know what happens to them post ending

It's like people are so simple minded and have no imagination, everything needs to be explained and presented to them

And before you ask, TLOU is absolutely in my top 5 GOAT games, probably a contender for the number 1 spot. But not every goddamn property needs a sequel

I think it could pick up with Joel a few months after, trying to come to terms with some of his decisions, and Ellie gradually clocking on to the truth. It could be a 50/50 split control wise, and see the same story from a different perspective, similar to The Affair. Joel could move on And leave Ellie behind, and we then take control of a Firefly member tracking Ellie down for a cure.

Either that, or Joel as a Teenager before any of this happen, and call it The First of Us :p

I don't know how they would continue Joel and Ellie's story without underminining the ending of TLOU.

Hypothetically, right?

Imo I would want for them to do what they feel most strongly and theamtically passionate about. At the end of the day, after beating the game and thinking about there preferably being no sequel at all, then maybe one with Joel and Ellie, or finally just a separate story without them, I decided that all I wanted was to be swept up in a good story-driven game, and for that, the most important element is the pen behind it and not the ink.

That said, this is probably also due to a bit of uncertainty on how they could approach it without botching several things that may or may not matter...but that's a different story for another day.

As for MP, keep it as simple, balanced, and group-oriented as it was and you got a good sell. Re-work technicalities and intelligently expand and you got an even better one. "Over-accessorize" (a la UC3) and play the appeasement game and you probably won't have something quite as sharp.

Just Ellie or someone new

MP in TLOU was rad, I'd like a create-a-player this time though and more modes

Fuck co-op campaign. Don't fuck with the campaign by making it co-op.
Too many games got fucked up last gen because everyone wanted to make their single player games co-op.
Make a separate mode like Portal 2 or just play MP with your friends.

10 years later.

Grown up Ellie.

Little or No Joel. Maybe flashbacks that fill in some of the gap between the 2 games?

Ellie isnt immune to the virus. Her immune system just slows it down a whole lot but after 10 years the effects are starting to show. Mark on her forearm has grown much large etc.... Maybe she has super sensitive clicker hearing and that can be a story justification for that hearing mode? Maybe she is MGS4 Solid Snake and a biological ticking timebomb that could dumb the human race...

The actual Infection elsewhere has also evolved a bunch resulting in new enamies and gameplay ideas.

But I am not sure what the actual carrot on the stick for the story would be though. "looking for the cure" seems rote. Maybe Ellie is just a wanderer and happens to get involved in a random conflict.

Or maybe new characters but a older Ellie and Joel play a part in the story.

Story

I would like the story to be Ellie when she is grown up, Joel is dead or dies early on in the game. Or to be revolved around a new set of characters in the same universe with references to the original, for example You might meet Bill.
Would like more variety of enemies, maybe they can add some animals into it, like attack dogs or a wild bear. Also more types of infected obviously.
Remove Listen mode, honestly doesn't make sense since characters are meant to be human and not have super hearing.

Multilayer

I like the small player count so hopefully they keep it the same, also like the fact they added a no party playlist in the original so keep that.
They need more modes, the original only had 3, I want at least 5 in the next one.
Remove listen mode form multiplayer.
More weapons, new crafting items and new perks.
Map DLC should be free and no weapons and perks locked behind a pay wall. They can add all the cosmetic items they want
Keep PvP pure so no zombies mixed in.
Better character creation option.

Would like a co-op horde mode. They can do endless horde mode or a one you can beat setup similarly to the Ellie and David team up.

Sequel should involve both. I love these characters.

It doesn't necessary have to start directly from where it cut off (could be days, months, years later).

No Joel, or if he is involved, it's briefly. His story is done. Playing as him again would just undercut the first game.

I'd like a different set of characters in general but I can see Ellie coming back, there's more stories for her I'd wager.

I'd kind of like no sequel in general. Or maybe go the anthology route where certain themes are present but not neccessarily a direct sequel.

I'm on #teamnosequel.

I feel it can stand alone as a one-and-done thing and that there's no need for a sequel. And I say that knowing it is my favourite game.

That being said, I'm not blind to the fact The Last of Us was one of the most critically acclaimed games of all time, won a dozen GOTY awards, sold incredibly well and made a gazillion dollars for Sony that not doing a sequel will make little-to-no business sense.

That also being said, I feel Naughty Dog has earned carte blanche and is one of the few studios out there - certainly on a first-party level - that can do whatever the hell it wants. Whether it wants to do a new IP, whether it wants to do TLOU2, whether it wants to return to Uncharted, Jak & Daxter etc etc etc (it won't). I will go where they go. And if they go with a TLOU2, so be it because I know it will be nothing short of brilliant, knowing the quality of Naughty Dog's games. Even if I am of the belief there shouldn't be a TLOU2.

A sequel set in the same universe with different characters, the Joel and Ellie story is finished and doesn't need revisited. Maybe set it 10 years after in a different part of the world, that would be good for me.

I think it's worth doing an Ellie story. A sequel to The Last of Us is something I have trouble conceptualizing, and it seems hard to do with or without her, so I'd go with. Just to have that connection to the prior game and move forward with the world.

I really don't know what character archetype they could tackle next and make interesting, otherwise. You could maybe do two younger (18-22) characters, but you could also do that with Ellie. I don't think there's a lot of room to replicate the experience of TLOU.

MP

Keep doing what they're doing.
I'd like to see a competitive mode with infected, and the ability to use bricks/bottles in the environment to manipulate them.
I'd also like some kind of co-op mode.

I'd rather not have either of them return in any significant way if they can't make the story compelling enough. I'd like to see how the rest of the world is coping with it. Maybe they could do a cameo. As for MP, all I need is a horde mode. Everything else is fine.

I have no interest in a Last of Us game unless it's picking up where it left off so Joel & Ellie.

The world of Last of Us isn't particularly interesting but Joel & Ellie are and i want to see where that arc ends, people can say Joel's story ended but it didn't, there is absolutely more to that story.

If a sequel HAS to be done, ditch Joel and Ellie because that story is done.

They could have small cameos were we run into an adult Ellie and a grey haired Joel.

I'm really conflicted with this. For me TLOU's ending is perfect and closes their arcs in a great way. However, i really loved those characters, so playing now with an older Ellie would be amazing...

i really don't know, but whatever they decide to do, i hope it delivers. And if we don't play as Ellie or Joel, maybe a cameo or a picture or something somewhere would be sweet.

New characters, different part of the world. They could tell so many stories set in the universe, simply using different characters, cities, etc

Would love to see an adult Ellie as main character a few years after the 1st game. Joel could appear too, hes one of my fav charaters of all time, but i feel the story of TLOU2 would be better if Ellie takes the lead.

I love Joel and Ellie, but I feel there story has been told and is complete. Let's have some new characters, and if they must, maybe cross paths briefly with Joel and Ellie.

MP was fantastic, and I really don't want to see any changes. Give me new maps and modes, no dlc weapons, and I'm good to go!

If you ditch Ellie what do you do instead?

You can't just do another parent and child. You can't do a lone character. You might be able to do a couple, and you can still leverage Ellie in that set-up.

It's a tough one.

If they have a story to tell with Joel and Ellie, go for it. I don't have a problem with Joel in a TLOU2, but I don't see him being in TLOU2 from beginning to end, and I'd be against that. I'm fine if they want to cap off his story, I don't think he needs a complete game. Ellie on the other hand, I could see TLOU2 mainly being about her. But if they want new characters, it'd be a nice change of pace.

Multiplayer, as long as you keep the core formula, add what it needs. Just keep that slow, team oriented fighting, TLOU MP works so well because of how much it takes from the single player and makes it work in multiplayer. As long as I get to keep my Molotov I'm happy, I love burning people. It could probably use a few new modes. Maybe a co-op horde mode type thing, or a co-op campaign that is it's own separate thing, like Uncharted has. Maybe taking inspiration from L4D in terms of progression.
