This turns my stomach. Just flat out the most offensive game I've ever seen.

I can name family members that died in this conflict, wept at the pictures and accounts of the dead and maimed that experienced this hell, was taught all the horrors of it from primary school, through my whole life, it's only ever been a symbol of the folly of war, the worst, most black and shameful era of British and European history. I've been to the actual battlefields and mass graves across Europe, held the minutes silence without fail every rememberence day my entire life, for as long as I could understand the meaning of it.

There was no glory in this war. No thrilling action or daring do, no heroes and villains, this was mass murder, a scar on the history of our species, and every single person involved in it was a victim.

This trailer, the entire concept of this game, makes me feel physically sick, and just so fucking angry.

How fucking dare anyone make a game like this about the First World War.

I don't know what's worse, the sick fucking emotionless, greedy cunts that would seriously exploit this horror of an industrialised massacre, or the ignorant, soulless bastards that will give them money and enjoy it.

Anyone involved in this, or seriously think of buying this, should be ashamed of themselves.

I dont wanna sound insensitive, but.... It was more than 100 years ago....

Of course, then I read that last line and lost all shits given. What the hell?

I am sorry but I don't see how drawing a line in the sand with this game works. It was an atrocious war, but they all are. If you have an issue with violence in video games, that's one issue, but to take up the banner against this one conflict doesn't make sense. Do you think the Vietnamese or Americans shouldn't have been upset about BF Vietnam? Is WWII not in a way shameful for the Germans? Yet we played the crap out of that. If you are taking a moral stand against war games in general, I understand, but taking up the rallying charge against only this is selfish and completely degrades your argument.

"There was no glory in this war. No thrilling action or daring do, no heroes". Your ancestors should slap the shit out of you for saying that. They answered their nations call no matter how wrong it may have been in hindsight. I don't agree with the war I fought in but I'd never degrade the sacrifices I made or that my brothers did. We volunteered to fight for our nation, no matter the cause. There may not have been glory as a nation, but there was glory and heroes among the men that fought it. Wars have not changed at all since this moment and never will. We bombed mercilessly in WWII, Vietnam, and present day. Do you think the people that we bombed in Iraq and AFG felt different than those men in the trenches? They had nothing to defend themselves against our technology and weaponry.

How fucking dare anyone make a game like this about the First World War. How dare you act like your sacrifice is different than any other generation or any other nation. You put your foot down when it comes to this, but not when it effects others? What kind of coward are you? This is where you draw the line? If you have a principle, stand up for it in full, no when it casts an ugly light on the actions of your ancestors.

I'm not sure what I think of their handling of this yet. As I posted earlier...

But if you are going to cry foul to this, cry foul to the whole industry, for everyone that would be effected, not just your own. This war is unique in scale only. Time will tell if they've handled this properly. It's clear from this thread that there's plenty of misinformation about this war, and the game has probably already resulted in more people going out to learn about i than anything else. Wouldn't reminding the public of the atrocities do more good than harm? Besides reminding you how shameful it makes you of your countries history?

This.

OMG! Another SJW "offended", just don't look at the game, don't buy the game, jesus fucking christ on a chicken basket! when will your kind go away? It's a game, dammit, shut the fuck up. I'm buying it, and playing the crap out of it.

Yeah, you know what? Calm yourself. Would you kindly specify this particular "kind" for me, please? Dude is upset is all. If you have an opinion be constructive 'bout it.

EDIT:

Oh, he's banned. Nevermind then.

Social Justice Nu-Males is the big one.
Not sure why you need to protect him. He was a capable soldier in WWI, won some medals IIRC.
It was just an idea to see the outrage social media would have if you did have Hitler in the game in a neutral state. Having to protect hitler, imagine the fallout.

You've just described every war, ever...

I hope, for the sake of consistency, that you feel this way about every game/movie/tv show/ novel/play that has every used a nonfictional conflict as a backdrop.

This is a great post, kudos to you.

So if a film studio makes a movie based on the events that happened in WW1 its fine. Or an author writes a book on the subject thats considered fine too. But now a video game is being made and it's not ok? Pull your head out of your ass mate. It's part of world history. Past world events like these need to be told and remembered so future generations don't repeat such atrocities. It's up to the creative designers on how they decide to portray events.

Those are two completely different things though. No film maker or author would ever portray World War I in a positive light and going by the trailer (and the dev comments about how awesome it feels to kill people with a bayonet) this game kinda does. It's just another power fantasy and I highly doubt Battlefield of all things will put some sort of message about the atrocities of war in the game. But as the post I've quoted above already says, this isn't a problem that's unique to Battlefield 1.

Wonder what EA's roadmap for "Battlefield 2" looks like? Surely they mapped out a high-level sequel strategy, so I wonder if they're thinking of staying in the WW1 time frame or transitioning to another era.

The fact that they're being liberal with the game's adherence to the realities of WW1 tells me they could probably stay in the WW1 - WWII time frame and get some new mileage. The previous glut of WWII games seemed obsessed with realism, so some revisionist history from devs could breathe new life into the this second round of 20th century FPS games.

I can't believe EA allowed DICE to do this, I'm still in shock from that trailer.

I'll admit I thought WW1 would be boring, but now I see that was just me being ignorant to how much actually went on in that war.

I'm definitely getting this day -3.

I'm assuming the next one is a modern warfare or sci-fi game helmed by DICE LA.

EA treats their FPS releases as three year long platforms now, so putting them in different settings makes sense.

People are so easily pleased. We saw... 1 minute worth of "footage" and everyone is inexplicably hype. It's going to be hilarious when the final product is grossly underwhelming.

You've just described every war, ever...

Actually, now that I think about it, this is not limited to wars either.

I guess that given that I have a relative that was apparently a collateral victim of a mafia conflict I should find every buyer of GTA/Yakuza/Mafia ashamed?

Like this one?

Yup just like that. Beautiful, mind if I use it soon? I really like how DICE gave these African-American soldiers actual African-American features.

You do realize that DICE is a game developer that has made previous games and people with accounts on NeoGAF can have played said games and determined them to be good?

You got some nerve labeling people like that. So you feel this way about every single game based off of a war? This war was 100 years ago. It was a brutal and disgusting episode in human history. So was the Vietnam war, so was World War II, so were all the Middle Eastern wars. I have family that died in some of the conflicts in the Middle East.

It's a fucking game. There is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. I doubt anyone is looking at World War I with rosy eyes now that this game is being developed. It doesn't take away from human history. Maybe take a step back before calling me an ignorant, soulless bastard.

Edit: I see the post was addressed a whole bunch. Sorry for bringing it up again.

Woah.

I don't know how appropriate a dubstep remix of Seven Nation Army is for a WW1 game promo...

...But that trailer is hype as fuck.

I think it's a great idea to put Hitler in a WWI game. The guy was not born as a monster. His experience in WWI certainly played a part in what he became. To explore that experience can make a memorable singleplayer campaign.

Didn't realize they landed on that 3-year cycle...this is good news. Publishers are going back to the "future warfare" well so much now I'm just waiting for Battlefield or Call of Duty to take the fantasy/alternate universe route.

People are excited over a franchise they love. No need to be a buzz killington over it.

- Earth-shattering Intuitive Destruction - With intuitive destruction no battle is ever the same. Destroy vehicles big and small, and demolish entire buildings. From tiny wooden houses to massive stone forts, even the grounds on which you're fighting can be blasted apart.

Hell yeah more destruction is always a plus in my book.

Looking forward to seeing more.

Having not played the game, how can you assume the war itself will apply a "positive light" to the war.

For all we know, it will be simply be showing a POV of soldiers around the world performing the horrible, life or death tasks their governments assigned them to.

It's doesn't HAVE to be a tale of good and evil. It could be about fighting for the man standing next to you... Which is often what actually motivated the soldiers who are thrust into these situations.

Originally they were rotating Battlefield Mainline, Battlefield Hardline, and Battlefront, but I suspect they'll just have Visceral's remaining Battlefield staff work with DICE LA on something in a more popular setting than Hardline was.

Feasibly Battlefield Mainline and Battlefield Alternate could change settings each game, but the development timeline of an annual FPS release with a three year development cycle seems to be in place at this point.

I don't know what kind of shitshow is going on in here but Hardcore History did a lengthy series on World War I recently and regardless what side of the debate you're on you should do yourself a favor and go listen to it. It's very long but a very detailed and well researched look at a conflict which, at least in my own mind, always seemed to get the short shrift from the perspective of historical importance.

Part of it is because I learned about the war from an American perspective, and part of it is also the distance in time that I am now from high school which is the last time I had any sort of formal history education, but for me that series really laid bare the sheer magnitude of the horror of World War I.

You do realize this game aren't those games...right?
Yeah. All development history and staff in this iterative industry is lost between the last game and the next game by the same team.

Yup that's exactly how this industry works.
