DOOM – Launch Trailer

To be honest whilst I disliked Doom 3's big focus on narrative, I was always fascinated with Doom's story as a kid. I was actually really looking forward to the movie until they turned it into Resident Evil!

Same here actually. I loved the demon designs so I'd wonder what they really were or at least where the fuck that Cyberdemon came from because of boss looking he was. lol

Still though gameplay and shooting demons in the face first, story second which is what made Doom a lot of fun and Doom 3 not so much.

The Doom movie was great, when it was called Event Horizon

No lies here. I've actually spent the weekend watching the Indiana Jones movies because of my excitement for Uncharted 4 and then trying to go through some "Space/Horror/Action" stuff for my Doom hype. So I watched the Doom movie...honestly wasn't as bad as I remembered but still a letdown for the games. I watched Pandorum last night and going for Event Horizon tonight, would of been nice if they released that director's cut though.

Is this correct, that the retail version lacks the actual game data?

That's how Bethesda rolls these days. I'll be getting the retail version anyway, cause it's around $10 cheaper for me than the $60 Steam price. Pretty messed up that a physical version that costs a lot more to manufacture and distribute ends up costing less than just buying it directly online.

Well, the included disc has some data, but there'd need to be five or six more for retail copies to have all of it (depending on the degree to which Steam can compress the data depots). I'd expect this to become increasingly common among particularly large (40GB+) games.

Found these on reddit:

I wish this was the box art

Very annoying. What would the reason be? Not wanting to pay for more discs? It would put it at about 6 discs.

I'm not sure which would be quicker, a 10GB DVD install and a 45GB download or a 55GB DVD install.

Yep, on PC it does.

Unbelievable. What a complete sham. Already was enough with MGSV physical not being anything but a Steam code. This trend is bullshit.

So why on earth don't they use a Blu-Ray disc which can easily store as much? Let those who own a drive install it like any other sane physical install, and those without a drive download it online. It's literally what the format was intended for.

Gamespot have some SP footage :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i92rgRDT0lI

This game looks atrocious with a controller, I mean this is so slow....

The PC version demoed impressed me greatly with its speed and focus on precision, it's actually amazing to see such a difference between PC and consoles level of playability.

looks fun as hell honestly, love the executions
I think I'll like this
although I also liked doom 3

i don't expect doom 2016 to feel as incredibly good as brutal doom, but it definitely looks decent

I'm so torn on this game. On one hand that trailer looked awesome, on the other hand the MP and SP footage I have seen looks kind of uninspired.

These are my exact thoughts. I want it to be good, I really do, but I just don't believe it. When does the review embargo lift?

PCs equipped with BD drives are rather uncommon, especially with regard to custom systems (both user-built and store-built), which these days often don't have an optical drive at all. I myself have a BD drive but didn't bother installing it when I bought a new case ~16 months ago as I figured I'd do so only when I actually need it... and that day has yet to come.

Won't they have a steam sale for the entire doom franchise to celebrate this game's release? I was hoping for a sale to buy doom 3.

The game's still a few days away, so there's time yet for a sale that overlaps launch day.

Edit: The Doom 3 and Doom Pack subs were modified in some way a few weeks ago. Expect a sale.

If the publisher believed reviewers would score it 10/10, they'd send out review copies as early as possible, to start word of mouth to back the marketing campaign. If the publisher had reason to believe the game would review very badly, then they'd hold back review copies to get as many early sales as possible before word of mouth killed it. You don't hold back reviews if you're confident in your product.

Given the fallout from the nearly unanimously canned multiplayer beta, the over-priced and under-whelming season pass, and the utter lack of excitement that an hour long stream with the developers seems to have generated, I suspect Bethesda are thinking they have a stinker on their hands.
All my friends loved it and a lot of gaffers seemed to like it too. Mixed maybe but I haven't seen anything unanimous.

Actual media on a physical release shouldn't honestly even be up for debate, but here we are where consumers are literally paying full price for a disc with a 'The princess is in another castle' like experience.

There are those who want their physical purchase to go towards something other than yet another online-only download, and at the very least for options to exist: those with the hardware install via the disc and those without use the included digital code. What downside is there? External BR drives also are available, I bought an inexpensive one in 2011.

The point is it's a format designed for large capacity, unlike ageing DVDs, and if there's going to be a physical release pressing a Blu-Ray disc isn't going to add much to the cost yet provide an option to the consumer.

Damn it, steam key is a lot cheaper but I love the reversible hard cover. Wat do

But this is ID we're talking about. They released Doom3 on CD and DVD. Don't understand why couldn't they do a bluray version, especially considering the 10 gig install from disc is rather pointless when you have to download 45 anyway.

I'm aware of your point. The cost of 50GB BDs can still be measured in dollars*, though, and when a publisher is manufacturing hundreds of thousands if not millions of retail copies of a given title, that small expense adds up to a pretty penny very quickly, so naturally they're going to be wary of pressing BDs for PC games while the odds of a customer being able to actually use one are comparatively tiny. Such is the consequence of PC gaming moving from physical distribution to digital distribution while Blu-ray was gaining traction as a mainstream product, unfortunately.

* Well, publishers hardly need to go out and buy spindles of 50GB discs from stores, but said discs would nonetheless still be exponentially more expensive than DVD-R9s.

I wonder what's going to happen in 5 years when physical media is nothing more than a novelty. It sucks for collectors who still want something tangible for a license they paid for or those with crappy internet in their countries. Hopefully connections improve world wide in the next few years.

They should just slap it on a USB stick (which would turn out to be more expensive actually). My huge laptop doesn't even have a disc drive and my next PC won't have one either. Installing a game from a disc just sounds so archaic to me. The last time I did that was in 2008.

Also, using DVD's is more logical than using BDs when distributing on the PC platform. I don't know a single person here that has in their rig aside from maybe having it on their laptops. And even then most people with laptops I know of don't even have a disc drive.

I have a buddy at work who is hoping this will be some kind of creepy atmospheric experience like Doom 3. I keep telling him it's closer to the original Doom games where it's all about gore, speed, and metal but he doesn't seem to get it. He's self proclaimed huge Doom fan, but hasn't played Doom 1 or 2 at all.

I was on the fence after the MP beta and some of the early footage, but I'm on board now. Can't wait!

Not sure why some are being told there will be no review copies. That's completely opposite of what I was told.

"As you know, DOOM is comprised of a single-player campaign, online multiplayer, and SnapMap. After discussing, we believe all three elements are important parts of the complete DOOM experience, and are meant to be experienced as part of a complete package. As DOOM’s SnapMap and multiplayer modes both require access to a server that won’t be live prior to launch, review copies will arrive on launch day. "

Hm that's a little better, it does seem hard to review it in total if a big part of the game is missing.

Haha well shame for him then. Guess he'll get a rude awakening. He can go play Alien Isolation instead?

Shane Satterfield said on his podcast that Beth said it had something to do with network functionality not being turned on for SnapMap.

What a stupid excuse. They either think way too highly of their lame looking level editor or don't realize that other games get reviewed with parts of their online functionality missing all the time or are just bad liars. I choose option C.

They must've blown insane amounts of money on his title and its marketing, if the product were to reap high scores in their opinion that shit would be everywhere to further market it.

500k views on a trailer, damn.

I would imagine that there will certainly be creepy and atmospheric parts of the new DOOM. It won't be as extensive as DOOM 3 but it'll probably be there. Remember, the original DOOM games had some creepy and atmospheric parts to them.

I mean their "lame looking level editor" was Carmack's last contribution before he left. It's not unreasonable to think that they'd want it included in reviews.

There are a few clips on Live from Playstation and someone is streaming it on there right now. Seems to be late in the game though showing off some beautiful Mars vistas and other environment stuff but I won't spoil it. I did just hear the "You've returned.." dialog from the launch trailer. Dude playing isn't too good though. lol Keeps taking pot shots and running behind cover.

Looks like you get a results screen after each Mission completed too?

It's infuriating. There was a guy who literally stood still and fired his pistol at the wall for 2 minutes. And if it's the same guy I'm thinking of, he runs away from the demons for like 5 minutes before trying to take them down.

Coward. NO HONOUR.

Well I stopped watching because I didn't want the game spoiled but I checked back and saw he was unloading the AR at two armored Pinky demons to their fronts until he was dry and then he ran away. lol

There's also a past broadcast on there of someone playing on Nightmare difficulty. He died a lot in the opening area. lol Looks like a fireball from a Imp will take you from full health to 20%. He died a lot from those and one hit just set him on fire for a death animation. lol

It's $45 on GMG and it'll be like $30 on the steam sale

He loved Alien Isolation, and he's played all the others like PT and Outlast, he's hoping for the same kind of experience. I told him he needs to watch some of the newer footage, but I doubt he will. Pretty sure in a couple weeks I'll be hearing about how it wasn't what he was expecting.

I loved Doom 3 but man it had identity crisis. Like it wanted to be this intense, story led survival horror, but the actual story was pretty weak, and it still had "Monsters spawn, defeat them all" gameplay, and all these big beefy guns.

And the final boss. Yikes. That was so not what DooM was ever, or should ever be about. Hopefully the Spider-Mastermind can be defeated by conventional fire and not a damn soul cube.

This is a few months old, but I've never seen these screens before. Gives a better look at the BFG, and an untextured model of
a very large Spiderdemon

Wasn't doom 3 horror? This doesn't look like horror.

That 3 at the end of the title doesn't mean cubed y'know

As someone who's only seen the Doom games from videos and hasn't actually played them, I don't think Doom should really be classified as a horror franchise. The whole point of the series is that you're a badass space marine who can singlehandedly take out swarms of the most vile demons of Hell with nothing but your bare hands and some guns. It's the ultimate power trip fantasy which goes against what most conventional horror is about which is taking power away from you.

This guy gets it

Please just take half an hour to play Doom 2, PM me later with thanks.
