NPD Sales Results for April 2016 [Sony, MS, & Nintendo refuse to comment on hardware]

Mr Reasonable

Completely Unreasonable
Minecraft, I believe.

Read the PR again:

The "Xbox Store" didn't exist on the 360.

So you think they should say "Halo 5 is the biggest selling title on our consolidated digital storefront. We would like to underline that other storefronts have existed and that those stores may have hosted better selling titles".

Not direct, but implicit lies.

Basically spin.

Also, words like "opening week" is telling.

"Halo5 is the biggest selling title on our consolidated digital storefront. We would like to underline that other storefronts have existed and that those stores may have hosted better selling titles. We say opening week as we are comparing like-for-like sale periods, not all time figures."

Does that work now? Or if the statement does do we still have to take the stance that everything they said is a lie anyway?

What are you on about exactly? They used the wording they did for a reason just like every single other PR they've released this gen. Have you somehow missed all the other deceptive/misleading spin they've laid out before this?

This isn't a situation of "oh people are being so unreasonable with MS expecting them to be specific in their PR" this is a situation of "oh it's yet another MS PR that is specifically worded in order to mislead here's what it actually means." Soooo how about showing some self awareness and old fashioned humility instead of attacking people explaining how you were duped as if they're being unreasonable. They're not the ones in the wrong here you are.

Umm, what? You started this conversation by saying "It is the best selling digital game ever for Microsoft" and using that PR as your proof. But it's not the best selling digital game ever for Microsoft, and I explained to you why.

You were tricked by their PR.

Yeah it's still a lie from liers.

Your clarifications that directly contradict within the paragraphs are as insane as prefixing a cigarette warning label with " This packet may not inflict you with cancer. But smoking is known to cause cancer."

Or in reply to a question of infidelity: "I've not cheated on you, today."

PR works by tricking you like it just did. They didn't tell a lie, but you read it the way they intended to make you think something is more of an achievement than it was.

Welcome to the spin zone. Sit down when you get dizzy.

I swear it almost seems as if every NPD thread, there's someone who comes in here to try and proof everyone else wrong but instead make a fool of themselves.

No, that is not how MS should say it, but that is how you should read it. When deciphering the texts that are MS PR, you have to pay particular attention to details. Details, that may not look consequential, but that conceal great truths.

Quantum Break price reductions are no sign of weakness, but of attractivity. It's the title retailers try to pull in customers with, like supermarkets do with heavy discounts on fresh milk, beer or pasta.
Stop seeing problems when there are none.

QB is the new FIFA confirmed.

Jack is the new... Who's a big "futbol" star these days? I don't know, Pele?

You haven't been watching futebol for a long time, eh? ;P
Was going to say Messy or somebody but all I read about it lately is corruption charges and match fixing and dudes running offshore accounts.

And Pele had that painful E3 interview during the conference last year so thought he may still be a thing.

Best selling digital game with also $400 mil. revenue. Sorry, i didn't swallowed their PR bullshit.

Halo 5 underperformed massively! Especially when you compare it vs. Halo 3. Halo 3 was the first ( like Halo 5 ) on new consoles, X360 then. And X360 userbase during Halo 3 launch were smaller vs. Xbone userbase during Halo 5 launch.

There is no point in comparing it to Halo 3. Completely different markets. The 360 had a ton of momentum and hype. Halo 3 was the most in demand FPS game at the time, keep in mind it came out before COD4. Halo today, at best is the third most popular FPS franchise on consoles after COD and BF. Although I would argue it is also behind Destiny and maybe Titanfall.

Actually, MCC was the first XB1 Halo game, and that game had insanely terrible word of mouth. Halo 3 was coming off the success and momentum of Halo 2.

It was ~28% digital if you include bundle.

And all considdring, this was only first week, we all know digital sales ratio always decrease after launch. Honestly, when all is well and done, Halo 5 probabily won't have much more than the ~20% avg of last year....

So Halo 5 sold ~1.3m in 5 days.

Will be interesting to compare with Uncharted 4, despite the diff. in days tracked.

Isn't the copy of Halo 5 from the LE bundle digital? If I remember correctly, the game sold 842K physical copies along with 93K LE bundles. So shouldn't the total physical + digital sales be 1.17m?

Sorry, but that's a bad excuse. What different martkets? It is the same market : console market. Halo 3 was the first MAINLINE Halo on X360. Halo 5 was the first MAINLINE Halo on Xbone. Keep in mind that Halo 5 came out before COD : BO3. Hype or not, Halo 3 and Halo 5 are the first mainline Halos previous Xbox and current Xbox, so, comparison is legit.

Uncharted never charted anywhere near Halo numbers, I don't see why that should change now. We're talking 537,000 for U2 on launch month in the US and 700,000 for U3 compared to, say, 3.3 million for Halo 3 and 3.2 million for Halo 4. Not comparable.

The big story when looking at the Halo 5 number you shared is how far the Halo series has fallen - from a 3.2 million launch to a 1.3 million launch (including digital and bundle) is pretty horrendous.

Halo 5 had the best digital attach of any game MS launched at retail and digital simultaneously that is a true statement.

Minecraft at launch was digital only. Halo 5 had the best digital attach of a 1st party retail title.

No doubt. Halo 5 sales are really bad considering previous performances.

Read the rest of my post. It was not an excuse as that was not my point. I explained how the FPS market is different today than it was 8 years ago. Halo 5 unquestionably under performed but there was no way it was going to perform the same as Halo 3. Halo simply is not as a big a title as COD or BF today.

Still though - that digital number is amazing. I mean, the main game without bundles sold around 850,000-ish copies so to round out to 1.3 from 850k due to bundles and digital sales is impressive.

Not just that, but for many I think Halo 4, followed by the Master Chief Collection left a bad taste in many people's mouths, alongside the continuous rise of Call of Duty as *the* FPS to play. Many people enjoyed 5 a lot though since Bungie left Halo was not the same force it used to be.

Stop comparing FIFA with Microsoft. That's unfair. They are bending the truth where they can, force subcontractors into harsh conditions, replace old guys with other old guys and call it change and don't care about the game.

I don't know if ~1.3m is indeed accurate, now I'm in doubt of what 28% means.

But in any case is a good digital rate.

Companies are moving away from disclose actual sales. No surprises if Sony didn't say how much Uncharted 4 sold.

There's no benefit at all in announcing sales figures. And with how important and close to the vest digital sales figures are, we're going to see less and less and less.

Exception will be franchises that have an established history of releasing some kind of stat like COD. But the numbers released will become more and more indecipherable.

According to Ryng the 28% included the digital codes in the bundles.
