Neo Geo Pocket Color Appreciation Thread: Way Ahead of the Game (Boy)

I was looking for one of these at Hard Off last time I was in Japan, but I couldn't find one in decent condition. Is there a definitive model? Also what games should i look out for?

There was a Japan-only 2nd revision, the NGPC "slim." It's not much smaller, really.

You can tell it's different because the word COLOR is written in a cursive font and the watch battery and regular battery covers are different.

Had some tiny speakers delivered today from eBay, nothing I could find locally was small enough to fit inside the console, and soldered one onto the NGPC board. Crystal clear sound now. Another classic console escapes the rubbish bin.

Soldering God, etc.

I just ordered a silver NGPC with Sonic, Puzzle Bobble, KOF R2, Metal Slug 1st Mission and Pac-Man to go along with my new CMVS. I missed this the first time around, but I cannot wait to jump in.

I think it was an interesting system, but it's kinda terrible, too. All of the fighters feel the same and over time I stopped finding the stick to be that novel.

I still want the Ogre Battle and Wrestling game that came out in Japan.

I think the two Metal Slug games (of course) are pretty different than the various games in the series you can find elsewhere. All I own for the system atm are: Sonic Pocket, MS 1st and 2nd mission, Dark Arms, Bio Motor Unitron, and SNK vs Capcom.

Covers a good spectrum, but I really do wish more games came out that took advantage of the system's strengths. Its got a unique sound, and was powerful enough to have some pretty clear sounding voice samples. Surprised there arent many shooters.

EDIT: Kinda sucks that no one has translated Ogre Battle for the system either.

How durable is the NGPC? I've never played one. Is there anything on the system (like the directional stick) that ages poorly with extended use?

I'm thinking about acquiring one of these little guys as a companion to my new CMVS, but I don't know if I should grab a good looking used one or save up for a brand new NGPC for $100. If there's no real durability issues (ie like N64's analogue stick which gets loose over time) then I think I'll just try and nab a cheap one.

I'm loving SNK more and more these days and I look forward to checking out their library on this little gem.

I don't know if I've ever held a more solid and well-built-feeling handheld than the NGPC. The A and B buttons feel sturdy in ways handheld buttons almost never do (easily among the best-feeling handheld buttons ever!), it doesn't feel at all cheap, that stick is great... do watch out for scratched screens, of course, but otherwise I see no reason to avoid used.

Loved my NGPC's.

Match of the Millennium, the Metal Slugs and Last Blade in particular were amazing at the time.

Still own really nice Japanese transparent yellow lite and a pile of games. Just a shame this system failed and we never got a backlit version.

I spent way too much on Faselei! in college, but what a fun game. Love that simultaneous turn based strat, yo.

My local retro game store is closing down at the moment so I went to buy some random games to help out. I don't have a Neo Geo pocket Color, N-gage or Atari Lynx but I now have a game for each of those platforms in addition to about a dozen Gamegear/Game Boy games. Turns out this goes for over £50 on UK Ebay...I paid 50p. According to this thread its alright too. Might have to get myself a Neo Geo Pocket Color.

The only way MotM goes for £50 is if it is a complete copy, not just a the cart.

My mistake, no loose carts on Ebay. Very happy getting it for 50p regardless
Absolutely, it was a good deal.
MotM is definitely one of the better game on the system.

If you ever buy a NGPC, I also suggest you to get Sonic PA, Metal Slug 1&2, Dark Arms and Neo Turf Masters.

What's Biomotor Unitron worth? Struggling to find somewhere that imports to the UK and there's only one English copy on Ebay at £35 (fully boxed too)

Edit: Ordered the Japanese version as I hear it has dual Language support. I love the Neo Geo Pocket Color so much, just reviewed Sonic Pocket Adventure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QO8nNO8M3i4

Am I going to missing out on much if I go with this bundle instead of the one from the same seller listed in the OP?

Don't know a lick of Japanese so are the import games listed in the bigger lot worth it?

When I bought my Gameboy Color back in the day, the guy at EB was pushing this machine on me so aggressively. I ended up with the Gameboy, to play it safe (was an awesome console, so no regrets) but I was always curious to try it, ever since. I've never known anyone who bought one, though.

Some of those imports look like RPGs so you probably should go with the smaller one imo.

I'm hoping they put a few of these on the Nintendo 3DS eshop, I'd love to give a few of 'em a go legally. Especially the Metal Slug, Sonic, and fighting games :)

My favorite handheld of all time right here.

I have an original non-color model, 3 launch models and 3 slim models. I could never go back to the launch after going slim.

I play through CFC every few years, and have done so traditionally since 1999.

Fantastic little system that was ahead of its time.

I also have Gals Fighters, Rockman Battle, Sonic, Evolution, Metal Slug 1&2, Samurai Showdown, Last Blade, Fatal Fury, KoF, and Biomotor Unitron.

I'm tempted to play a few rounds of CFC now, haha.

I hadn't used my NGPC for a long time, but when I went to play it the other day, the second my thumb brushed against the joystick it split exactly in half and fell off in two pieces. RIP best handheld joystick. Dunno how/why it happened.

Got my system yesterday and while it feels fantastic it's very hard to go back to an unlit screen. Anyone have any impressions of the frontlight mod for the NGPC? Thinking of getting it done to my machine.

I'dbe more curious who offers such services fpr those unwilling to risk bad solder jobs, I've only done soldering like once :/

It's one of the more difficult mods, requires sacrificing a GBA SP frontlit. Seems like even an experienced modder doesn't always get a great result.

So Card Fighters Clash: Are there multiple versions of the game ala Pokemon, or just one? Also...there arent any bootleg NGPC games floating around...right?

So if I was just playing by myself, would it just be better to go with the sequel?

Well, the sequel was never officially translated, although I think there's a fan-made patch.

Even so, I think the sequel has a couple of cards (the CvS2 bosses, IIRC) which you can only get through trades with other players.

Both games are great anyway - the original pair is not only translated, some of the NPCs reference game locations and real-life people involved with both companies more directly; the 2nd game has more cards, although drawn with a smaller variety of poses (Falcoon was the artist for most if not all), and has a hole new category of Reaction card to spice up gameplay.

This morning I ordered a brand new factory sealed NGPC with Neo Turf Masters and Metal Slug 1st Mission!!!!

I've only played NGPC once in my life when a friend let me try it way back in middle school on the bus so I'm basically going to experience this system for the first time.

Cheers!

What are some cheap solid games to grab?

You'll definitely want to track down Match of the Millennium and Card Fighter Clash. Last Blade II and Samurai Shodown are also really good. Metal Slug 2nd Mission should be on your radar if you enjoy the first one. Sonic Pocket Adventure is a good port if you like Sonic. Faselei and Cotton are awesome games, but I'm assuming the English versions are ridiculously expensive nowadays.

Oh man I LOVED my NGPC. Used to play it during class in high school. Trying to avoid getting discovered by the pad making clicking sounds while playing MotM was a challenge.

So I just bought a Neo Geo Pocket Color, and I'm looking to build a small collection of the core games.

Can someone explain to me what's the deal with English copies of Faselei. Japanese copies are generally cheap, and I understand the game is common there. But I'm flummoxed about the English version.

I heard on Retronauts a while back that a hoard of the games were discovered and some point, and now it's dirt cheap. That's not true from what I"m seeing, though. Cart-only versions seem to be going for $80 and way up.

But then older discussions online (like this one: http://forum.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?28304-Faselei-U-S-version-is-it-really-rare ) claim it's rather common.

So what's the truth? If I want to have this one (probably cart only) in my budding collection what does it really cost?

As far as I'm aware, the English print run was a limited release in Europe, as all the US stock got recalled before it went to stores. You can occasionally find blister packs bundles of NGPC games that have 2/3 common games and one rare one to jump up the price.

Oddly enough, I got my copy for around £25 delivered from a US seller as the label was "Slightly damaged" but it's hardly noticeable. The game is pretty decent though, but you're gonna pay a hefty sum for it, even cart only :(. Cheapest I've seen it recently is £40.

Do recommend Samurai Shodown! 2 and Last Blade as pick ups, though most of the fighting games on it are great (and some, like King of Fighters R2 are really cheap). Sonic Pocket Adventure's a decent reimagining of Sonic 2 as well. SNK vs Capcom Card Fighters is good get too! It's a great little system :).

Good to know, thanks. I'll keep my eyes open, then.

It seems silly, but I really look forward to collecting for this handheld.

Like a year or two after SNK closed and they recalled all of the stock, places like EBGames and GameStop started selling packs of Neo Geo Pocket Color systems with six games, along with those "expansion packs" with four other games, all as "Pocket Color Arcade." That's actually how I got my system. I never did get any of those expansion packs, though, just the one with the system and six games.
