Neo Geo Pocket Color Appreciation Thread: Way Ahead of the Game (Boy)

Yeah, it was printed but recalled. Think they eventually sold them via that 4 pack.

My copy's ESRB rated as well.

Got that game twice, it was dirt cheap at time... (around 2003)

Anybody tried dive Alert, i think it's made by the same team ? Worst the Price ? (one of the 2 version is really expensive)

I've only watched videos on YouTube, but it looked pretty boring to me.

By Neo Geo Pocket Color standards, the price isn't too bad, though.

It's currently going for $23.24 on Amazon.

And there are a ton on Ebay for at most $72.20 and that one gets you both versions of the game.

Boxed game are freaking hard to find, i saw about twice in a year for a Dark Arms complete in box... i miss it by a few minute each time (around 40$). I would like to have a complete in box RPG collection for this system (i only have Robot Unitron and The other capcom card game i forgot the name which came in 2 version). I'm happy faselei have not box, because the price would be insane..

Retrogames prices are definitely rising across the board.

Be aware that Faselei is the japanese version which isn't that expensive.

Thankfully, there are still Neo Geo Pocket bargains, if you're willing to be patient.

Also, I think that's the European Faselei. In the third image, the cart doesn't have the Japanese script (not sure if it's hiragana/kanji etc.) that I usually see on Japanese copies. I could be mistaken, but I've been hunting for an affordable English-language copy recently, which means this one is out of the question.

Yup. That's the European Faselei. Japanese Faselei has the Japanese writing on the cart and if complete, it comes in a cardboard box.

So I need to know before I spend over $100 on a video game.

Is Faselei actually worth owning? As a Mac user, emulation isn't an option.

On one hand the games seems really fun. On the other hand, it goes for such obscene prices, I'm really having a problem pulling the trigger on a copy.

I don't like speculating on games. I buy the ones I do because I want to play them. I understand that the nature of the hobby sometimes dictates paying more for that experience.

I've never spent triple digits on a game, though, and I'm wondering if this is the game to do it on?

If I paid $60-$70 for a cart-only copy of Faselei, did I get taken? I feel a little dumb for paying that much.

I can't think of another game that does what it does. Really awesome take on the genre. If you enjoy it, then I'd imagine it's absolutely worth it.

If not, you can at least make your money back!

Most recent pick up, Dark Arms! Nowt rare but not a fighting game for once!

Hey guys

Does anyone have any recommendations for frontlight NGPC mod service? I just got my NGPC last week, and as much as I love it, dealing with this screen is ROUGH. Forget about playing games at night lol.

Welcome to the NGPC fold. I don't have an answer for you, but I love it whenever this thread is bumped.

I recently got into the NGPC and have a small but growing collection of 8 games.

It's a wonderful little handheld. I love my Vita, I like my 3DS, but the NGPC is my current love.

Oh dude I feel your pain. We all do nowadays prolly. I have to blast a bright lamp into my SO's eyes while she sleeps to sit in bed and play Last Blade on this thing!

He's super busy but you can try emailing James at Jamma Nation X
(I cant remember his email off the top of my head but its easy to find on his site I'm sure)
. He's currently swamped by other commissions it seems like but he's working on my NGPC and front light modding it currently! Btw you'll have to provide your own gameboy SP screen.

The one thing that I still find impressive about the NGPC even in 2016 is just how great it FEELS. I'd heard a lot of praise for the clicky stick, but man the buttons are amazing too, they feel like little mini arcade buttons- which is exactly what you'd expect from a Neo Geo portable. This little guy deserved more love ;(

I did actually speak to James recently, but like you said he's swamped. Told me I could send it but he has no timeline for when he would finish it since it would be in between other mod jobs. I saw that it took 4 months to do someone's system, and since I just bought the thing I'd rather not go that long without it lol. But I might end up going with him, since there don't seem to be too many options.

Just curious, how long did it take him to start on your NGP?

Yeah they REALLY don't make hardware like thy used to. The microswitches inside the dpad (technical dpad) are rivaled only by the larger AES arcade sticks in my book. I'm impressed with the pressure sensitive nature of the buttons due to the lack of CD buttons, It's still pretty damn easy to pull off specials and what not in the fighting game library.

And James has barely started it for me , if he has started actually working on mine at all. I sent it to him about three weeks ago, I'm not in a rush to be honest and saved myself beating LB just so I can do it after its modded.

Saw this thread and instantly wanted to share my love for Faselei. I'll post it within context here as a reply.

After years of waiting for prices to go down I finally broke a couple years back and got Faselei (English version). I played the Japanese version countless times but it wasn't the same, and for me personally the price tag was justified after watching it sit around the $80 point for the better part of a decade.

I can't really answer if it's worth triple digits for you, but I can absolutely say from experience that it was worth it for me. I'm a massive fan of Advance Wars, less so of Fire Emblem (since it's so punishing), and I love the world of Front Mission but they've always been a massive mountain to climb. Faselei scratches that Advance Wars itch, but it does so in a different way.

My appreciation for Faselei isn’t for what it does “better” than other games in its genre across multiple platforms. Instead it comes from seeing the game unfold on NGP and appreciating just how much went into it, and how ambitious it was for such limited hardware. Much like Capcom vs SNK on NGP, Faselei is a bigger game than it has any right being. Story is crammed into tiny one/two word lines of text. Combat is designed around a two-button configuration. The game even seems to have its own language since gun and ammo names need to fit within just a few characters of text. It’s amazingly ambitious in scope *relative to other games on the platform* and for that reason alone the game is a must-have in my collection.

If you’re asking if the game is worth triple digits vs spending that money on an import on another system… that’s a tough call. If you’re looking for a gem on Neo Pocket that does what no other game on the system does, that’s Faselei. It defies its platform, and quite frankly is better than it has any right being. I put it less in the “Greatest games of all time” bucket, and more in the “Wow factor” one, sharing space with Knights in the Nightmare, Odin Sphere, The World Ends with You and Lunar Silver Star Story for their respective platforms.

It won’t be the best strategy RPG you ever play, but if you put yourself in the mindset of NGP’s hardware era and look at the company it shares the game is super impressive. But then again I’m crazy and carry my NGP in my work bag along with my 3DS and DSi every day. Tetris DS stays in my DSi by default and Faselei is in my Neo Pocket.

Nothing new to bring to the table, just want to say I'm a big fan of the NGPC, I think it has a modest but extremely impressive library. I sold a lot of my games a while back, and I sort of wish I hadn't, but I still have a fair few. :)

Love Sonic Pocket Adventure, Card Fighters Clash and both Metal Slug titles.

Thanks for the review. Patience paid off, and I was able to get a copy for $60, which I was quite happy with.

It's a very busy time for me right now, but I've been able to clear about three missions. I really enjoy the game so far. The difficulty is just right and I really love the world that the game creates.

I'm slowly building a nice, little NGPC collection. I'm up to 8 games so far, and should reach 9 or 10 soon.

Nice! Glad to hear you snagged it and are digging for the most part. It's crazy ambitious, and ya know... real Neo Pocket fans own it. ;)

Wow, Faselei. Now that's a name I've not heard in a long time... Almost takes me back to what? 2000-2001?

I really miss my time with my NGPC. It was a good precursor to the imminent GBA.

Been looking into getting a NGPC the last few days. Something about the spritework for the fighting games on the system charms the pants off me. It started because I was looking at Pocket Rumble on Steam and getting myself hyped up for it, and now I just want Gals Fighters. : /

Gals fighters is cool, and uses the final, smoothest version of their fighting engine (like MOTM), but is pretty limited, cast wise.

It has some super kawaii animations though.

I just like the way the compositions sound. Its got a unique feel when compared to others. On a side note, when game gear is done right, it can also sound great.

I've fallen in love with the little handheld quickly. I just wish I had more time to play it.

A few words of advice, if you buy one. Consider getting one of the Japan-only smaller NGPCs. You can tell because the word Color is in cursive not block letters. They look cool, and I've heard that sound performance is a little better. Also from photos, I think the screen is the tiniest bit brighter. Not much, but anything helps.

In terms of fighters, Gals Fighter is among the more expensive ones - probably $40. Last Blade is about the same or a little more. Match of the Millennium is $25 or less. Samurai Showdown and Fatal Fury are $10 to $15, but you can often find them for less. I just paid $8 for Fatal Fury R2.

The NGPC is region free, so sometimes you can pay a little less by getting the more common Japanese carts.

Where are you getting these prices? they're all much higher than that on ebay, and have been since I've been collecting for it (about a year).

I had no idea there was a smaller one. I'll definitely look into that. I had the chance to buy one in excellent condition from a store I worked at for $15 a year ago but I wasn't very familiar with them. I'm kicking myself over it now. Honestly, I'm pretty ok with the higher prices. It's nice to have something to collect and seek out again that will last me several years.

It looks like a lot of fun. The cast might be a little on the small size, but I like that it's less #edgy and more just cute and goofy.

Sometimes eBay, sometimes Amazon.

To be clear, I was referencing cart-only copies. With packaging adds a whole lot to the price.

Gals Fighter for $40

Samurai Showdown 2 for $6

Last Blade for $27

Match of the Millennium for $30
Ah okay. Amazon isn't an option outside the US, the vast majority of Amazon sellers who are not Amazon themselves do not post outside the US, or charge absolutely ridiculous postage prices.

It's almost like Capcom's Pocket Fighter., though not quite as insane. Silly exaggerated 'cartoon girly' animations.

Figured I'd post this here. I decided to buy the Casino titles just to have them all, this should be every US release including the 2 cart only games.

To get all the RPG on box is a freaking challenge for me right now, can't imagine have all US version boxed, this is great stuff here !

That's everything? I didn't realize how small the North American library was.

I thought the same thing. I had naturally collected about 25 of the games and figured there must be a lot more and stopped. An expert of sorts on another forum had got them all and cited every US release, so that should be it. The casino titles along with magical drop and dive alert becky gave me a lot of grief, but the others I bought when no one cared about the system.

Here's a bonus picture for you guys that like obscure portables. I believe this is every ngage release for the US. I'm also one title away from every game.com and virtual boy title, those will likely be the only systems I do full sets on, but no pictures of those since I'm not done just yet.
