Indie Games 2016 [June] Lets play some Indies!

Hearts of Iron 4 released too, but going by reviews, I might wait a bit until they worked in some AI patches. Not too fond on the AI ignoring military tactics and just being a pushover.
 
Sigh. that rare time when two games you want are coming out on the same day and you can only get one. Steamworld Heist is assured to be great, but watching House of the Dying Sun footage on Youtube and it looks so good

Been waiting for both for a long time. Figure I'll just go for it.

Frozen Synapse 2 looks so good. So, so good. I wasn't a huge fan of X-COM Apocalypse but its premise was fascinating. Nice to see a developer that agrees.

Waiting for some Gaf impressions on Ghost 1.0 and SteamWorld Heist port.

Ghost 1.0 is a great metroidvania, full of humor, hard challenges, and plenty of upgrades and stuff.

SteamWorld Heist is a great port. I was expecting a game like Angry Birds and Peggle, but it turns out to be more RPG and tactical fights. I mean, the skill shots are not so relevant so far.

I have some trouble with the camera movements in SWH which are very fast when switching between characters, or ending a turn. I am more on the Ghost bandwagon because of this. Otherwise, quality-wise, very impressive HD graphics.

Not interested in playing the beta but really looking forward to the game when it releases.
 
Anyone played The Solus Project? It's been in early access for a while. A preview video I saw a few months back looked promising but I'd love to hear some impressions.

- An isometric 3d world, where every floor in every building can be seamlessly entered, from basement to rooftops
- Utilitarian black-market augmentations like chainsaw or harpoon arms, coiled legs, cloaking rigs, mobile scouting eyes
- Melee weapons and fully-customizable weapons, ranging from stocks and silencers to emp or incendiary rounds
- A deep complex stealth system that takes into account: line of sight and vision cones, noise, shadows, distance, height, crouching, cover, enemy patrols, distractions, hiding spots, last known position, alert levels, taking out lights and cameras, disabling/hacking security systems
- Turn-based combat with abstracted time (ie a thrown grenade takes time to travel its arc)
- Hands-off quest design revolving around intrigue and corporate espionage
- Day/night cycle and passage of time, which influences guard patrols, if you have time to rest, where a mission target will be, etc.
- A keyword-based dialogue system that dynamically creates queries based on information you know and items in your inventory
- Progression system that completely removes XP for actions, instead revolving around mission milestones, finding/buying better hardware, equipment, and cybernetics, and learning new skills from trainers
- A health system with no HP, instead using a combination of Lesser, Greater, and Mortal injuries (bullet graze, melted femur, pierced lung, etc.) that affect your stats, movement, and status of individual body parts

Haha yeah, I still love that title, but it was awful from an SEO perspective, e.g. Google always automatically corrected your search to "role playing game". And some people complained that the title was misleading.

It launched yesterday as well (along with every other indie game ever) - steam reviews are positive at least!

I might get... one game this month, but I'm torn. Downwell on Vita, Humble Narrative Bundle, Ghost 1.0, House of the flying sun... that's just the tip!

Yes, I'm playing and enjoying it quite a bit right now. It's really good from what I've seen so far, but beware that it starts out very harsh and frustrating and you may flip your desk a few times before you get some upgrades going and the game eases up. Good controls (with 360 pad), fun upgrade selection from what I've seen so far, good secrets and I like the bodysnatching mechanic even if it isn't exactly a new idea.

Also beware of crappy internet humor. Memes and references ahoy!

Yesterday I made a post over on the Steam Community thread about the launch of our game, The Solus Project (which I've been helping with for about 9 months). It has has finally launched!


The game is a singleplayer wide-linear exploration adventure - with a bunch of survival and puzzle elements thrown in. You're alone on a deserted alien planet, and must scavenge for food and keep yourself warm while pressing ahead through a strange world, avoiding dangers when you can and uncovering secrets. There's a big old sci-fi story which I had a big part in writing - but I'll let you discover that for yourself. Enjoy being alone on a truly alien planet with lots at stake :)

In a 'Premature Evaluation' of the game, Rock, Paper Shotgun published the clause: 'The Solus Project is absolutely incredible'. That quote may or may not be taken out of context.
(Lucky for us it
is not.)

It would be beautiful if somebody could make an OT, I don't think it's even on the OT radar (and obviously I'm out).

Please note: The game includes functional VR implementation, but has not finished development or optimisation for VR yet. It is still in-progress. However, it is possible to have an amazing VR experience depending on your set-up and fortitude, so we feel it's appropriate to share with VR options active. It works best as a seated experience. We've only implemented VR in about the last month or so, so Vive controllers and roomscale (hardest to design) are very rudimentary and may cause issues. Don't buy it just for roomscale VR yet.

We had excellent positive reviews on Steam a week ago but that rating is currently being hammered by Vive users going in expecting a finished VR product :(

This looks and sounds really cool. I also like that it's singleplayer focused, as there's far too many multiplayer survival games. And thumbs up for controller support.

I'd say the ones focused on single player turn out the best. The Long Dark, Subnautica, Neo Scavenger, etc.

All of those (and Solus Project) look great. Survival games are one of those genres I've seen just whizz by me on the path to massive popularity, and as someone who prefers games single-player, I'm glad there are a few great ones to get to down the line.
 
I'd say the ones focused on single player turn out the best. The Long Dark, Subnautica, Neo Scavenger, etc.

I think it depends on what you're looking for. Minecraft, Terraria and similar can be quite compelling in groups, though personally I prefer singleplayer experiences.

Oh definitely, but a single player game can have tighter mechanics since it only has to worry about affecting one person, rather than needing to have mechanics that can suit a bunch of people at the same time. Slowly dying from hypothermia while getting lost in a blizzard probably wouldn't be very fun for other players, nor as effectively atmospheric when you can see the markers of your other friends in the distance and have their voices in your ear

True, but you can just as easily turn that argument around. Working together to take down a boss or overcoming an obstacle, can result in a variety of different approaches, where everyone contributes with their input and have different roles during an instance. Some of the things my group did in Terraria, the arenas we constructed to overcome bosses, reach the bottom or even going for the harder light/chaos world achievements, would be impossible to replicate in singleplayer. Not that I'm argueing that multiplayer is better than singleplayer, just different and hopefully there's room for both in the survival genre.

Can anyone remember the name of the indie game about a group of teenagers who unleash a ghost portal on an island? I saw the thread on here a while ago but can't remember the name.

So they patched the aforementioned harshness out of Ghost 1.0... In the release build, there was basically no way to properly heal (aside from buying a skill with your hard-earned and limited skill points), but now you can heal at save points. It's like night and day.

A little miffed that I bought the skill they rendered fairly useless with this. Yesterday, the skill was absolutely vital for survival. Today, it's just a shortcut to save you from having to run back and heal at the save point... No respec option either. :(

More_Badass did you (I think it was you) recently make a thread or post about turn based stealth games? I started reading it earlier but can't find it anywhere now even after much searching.

Picked up Ghost, it's pretty fun so far. The enemy possession mechanic is cool. The aesthetic has more little touches and details than I had expected

Also a belated Screenshot Saturday coming up when we get to the next page. Don't want to make the thread completely unreadable for 100ppp'rs
