Zelda Wii U - Recap of 5 hours gameplay stream

They were VERY explicit, again and again in the stream by Aonuma and Miyamoto, that those elements you bolded as well as others are all directly inspired by Zelda 1.

Even the Japanese title is a reference to Zelda 1

I was skipping around a lot in the videos so I missed those direct mentions. It's super obvious though, and that's really cool. It's basically what I wanted Wind Waker to be (and that's maybe my favourite Zelda, if tied with OoT), as that game doesn't really 'open up' until you get all the orbs and then you can more freely explore.

I can't believe how excited I am for this game. Before today I was complacent about a new Zelda after TP and SS being fairly disappointing and bland. This is hitting so many notes, and highly.

Oh and forgot the most important thing about the demo

Music was fucking amazing. Bar none best Zelda OST in a game and I only played 35 min. Shit was so fucking good.

Here's what I have of the alphabet so far:

I'm pretty sure I know K, but I couldn't get a good image of it.

Great work on the alphabets. I originally wanted to decrypt those code, but I was too tired to do it because of the stream last night. Thank you very much!

It almost became a drinking game how much they kept saying "you see this thing? Its like Zelda 1"

"You remember how useful fire was in Zelda 1? Same thing."

"Remember how Zelda 1 just started up so quickly? That."

"Remember that old man NPC from the beginning? Its like Zelda 1 I think"

"Look at those mountains in the back, the way those two kinda divide and have that gap with the sun coming through? don't they look like Zelda 1 manual art? I think so."

Btw for the people saying desolate even in the demo which I am assuming is heavily neutered had a lot of enemies and the first demo even had an optional mini boss that my cousin got to fight since he was messing around in the forest the whole time.

All he did was throw a bomb at a boulder and then it turned into the rock monster you see in the trailer, and it has weak points on its but if you damage any part of it it affects the way the monster moves. So like if you hit its legs it will limp (or at least I'm assuming based on what he told me)

Also I found a Rupee so Rupees are still in the game lmao. My rep told me no one found a rupee so I was like ayyyy

My only complaint was lack of NPCs and towns but apparently that won't be an issue so I'm not too worried.
Still want VA for all characters :/

Ye, but a lot of stuff are weapons like branches and shit the moblins are holding. So I'm guessing it will be kinda hard to be completely weaponless in the game.
Good. That just tells me this is classic Nintendo misdirection. I can't even call it misdirection. It's allowing bs speculation. Incoming 40 threads of discussion.

When did music play? Just during battle and sequences? I'm not sure how to feel about no Hyrule Field theme...

Witcher 3 isn't 136 km^2. The in-game Mini-Map provides meters so finding out world size is easy.

This is what I posted when B&W released:

I measured the in-game distances from N-S & W-E (the mini-map distances). The map is approximately 3085m X 2579m, or 7.96 km2. This is about 53% of the Novigrad/Velen/HOS total map size, and about the same size as all of the land area in Skellige (~35-40% of the full Skellige map, definitely a bit larger than Ard Skellig).

Note that this measurement (and the other map measurements) do not account for the restricted area at the border of each map where Geralt refuses to walk to. Accounting for those is a little difficult because the invisible border is not made up of straight lines. Mentally, I just tack off 10-15% of the sizes listed below.

Here are the rough calculations I did for the other maps:

Measuring the map from end to end (so including small restricted boundaries of each world map) gave me the dimensions, from which I got:

Novigrad & Velen (+HOS): 15.2 km2 (5.8 mi2)
Skellige Isles & Ocean: 28.9 km2 (11.1 mi2)
White Orchard: 0.8 km2 (0.3 mi2)
Kaer Morhen: 1.4 km2 (0.6 mi2)

Total: 46.3 km2 (17.8 mi2)

If we account for the boundaries it's probably a total right around 45 km2.

This was the best analysis of the Game Awards Map mathematically - everything is trig, only guess work is tree height & Link height as reference points. That yielded a size of ~240 sq. km for the Game Awards map (smaller than X which is ~400). Obviously it's tough to reconcile how close the Game Awards footage map is with what we saw today and what we'll have next Spring.

As for TP, my math yielded 1.04 sq km (.40 square miles).

Here's my map w/grid - each square is .01 sq km, so 10x10 squares is 1 sq km. Keep in mind that the 1.04 sq km is referring to green land/blue water only. Anything in black is not counted (so the area of the total rectangle is greater).

I really highly doubt that this new map is just 12x the size of TP. The portion we saw today itself looked significantly larger than TP. I want to see a direct quote from Aonuma. It may be possible he was referring to JUST the Plateau region as being ~12x TP size.

TP on Game Awards Map overlay (assuming 1.04 sq km for TP & 240 sq km for BotW):

dWzlQGX.jpg

Scale is 1 km. Each box is 1 sq km.

Also Witcher 3 overlaid on Game Awards Map (assuming 240 sq km). Doesn't include B&W.

Scale is 0.5 km. Each box is 0.25 sq km.

Oh god, hearing people try and make tortured connections to the Souls games is going to be the death of me

Won't it be. However, the slow mo reward after a dodge was undoubtedly influenced by platinum.

This does look like a game that's drawing upon the industry at large as well as the ideas of older games, past and present collide in spectacular fashion.

There was a tune right before the skull cave with the moblins inside that just had me like 😍😍😍😍😍😍 I think it was just the regular field theme, but I just didn't notice until that point

And the cut scene music they used for like 4 cutscenes in the 2nd demos were all great

I think that's acceptable because this game doesn't really have that much narrative baggage as MGSV did, which had to close and failed to close out the Metal Gear Saga.

Zelda:BoTW is a story about exploration and survival and engaging with the forces of natures in weather, sounds and sights, touch and taste and eventually overcoming those forces to rise against an Unfathomable one. The gameplay is the story as much as if not more so than the narrative.
I was always under the impression that MGS4 was the game to close the saga out. Anything after that was just bonus because the Big Boss saga was its own weird beast -- but point taken, and you're right that in MGS story is a bigger thing among its fans. Zelda has always kept its story telling ambitions rather modest so maybe a de emphasis on the story will go over well with most people.

I guess, for me, I feel like this Zelda is presenting a titanic shift for the series and how well is change often received by fans who have been with the franchise for a long time? This could either go MGSV or it could be RE4.

Thankfully, the praise seems to be very positive and the game looks phenomenal. We all should be wary of that Zelda cycle though lol.

How can this be true. Oot has so many classic tunes and wind waker has some too

lmfao. fucking great.

wonder if it's for the e3 demo and replaced with story stuff in the real game or if its just an easter egg thatll stay there.

Good stuff, thanks for the effort! So Zelda is smaller than XCX but larger than Witcher 3? What's this in comparison to Just Cause 2/3?

I've just realized I haven't thought about any other games shown at E3 besides Zelda since they showed it off.

Man the wait is going to be brutal

I don't see why they would change it. You can't even read it without a cipher like this:

They put these Hylian jokes in many Zelda games.

Well I was just watching a run through where Aonuma was talking about specifically removing any story elements from the game becuase he wants it to be like zelda 1 where you're just plopped into the world and figure out the story. So he wants to give nothing away.

That's the only reason I thought that. I don't think I've ever seen such a fourth wall/meme type of joke out of one of those, but I haven't deciphered a lot so whatevs idk.

JC 2&3 are massive - both ~400 sq mi (1036 sq km).

I was plenty skeptical when I heard that all Nintendo would be showing at E3 was Zelda

I'm here to eat crow, and mountains of it. This is my game of the show. Time to get a WiiU

Based on the Game Awards footage, yes its larger than W3 (+DLC) by a good amount.

Based on today's footage, can't say yet - over the weekend I intend to mine the videos and see if I can find enough to replicate the analysis in that reddit post. Unless someone else gets to it first.

But I am pretty certain that its >>>12X Twilight Princess. That would be smaller than Novigrad + Velen, and the sheer amount of geography we're observing just doesn't seem like it would fit in such a small area. The Plateau region itself looks to be several sq km.

Ugh, once again Nintendo is inserting shitty meme jokes into my Zelda games. Fuck you Nintendo!

Yes, sarcasm

This game seems to be a bit a reawakening, not just of Zelda, but of Nintendo.

I dunno about that lol. One of Nintendo's best developers potentially making a great game is par for the course. Doesn't really do anything to shore up their overall weaknesses.
