Andrew House surprised by timing of Project Scorpio announcement

Well said (although I guess that thinking doesn't apply to game announcements :p)

What's worrying is that WE are the audience for Scorpio, hardcore gamers (though I hate this term). And we have no fucking clue what this thing is, with seemingly contradictory statements flying everywhere, the message is very unclear. Which is concerning because this is exactly what happened last time Microsoft announced hardware...

Had the project not leaked, I doubt they would have talked about it.

They recorded all those developers and did the cgi presentation because it got leaked?

When's PSX? I wouldn't be surprised to see an "available this week" announcement there.

Too late. It'll be either Gamescom or PGW for a release before the holiday shopping starts. October-ish.

A release date for PlayStation 4 Neo has yet to be confirmed. House's reference to Apple, however, could suggest Sony has plans to release the console quickly following its reveal.

I think we are going to get announcement around August/September with release on October.

Been saying this for quite some time. All signs point to them doing exactly what Apple has been doing for a long-ass time now. They're gonna announce it and launch it 2-3-4 weeks later.

They wouldn't dare release a console in December.

If it's this year, it will be announced at Gamescom or Paris Games Week and released shortly thereafter. Or they may just announce it without a conference.

Is it feasible to pull an availiable now with PS4 Neo? That be crazy.

Gamescom announcement, "available next month", that would be crazy as well.

I feel like both companies did what they needed to do based on their current position. MS came out and said "Sure, we're down now, but we're coming back to blow your fucking socks off". Sony can come out and just talk about games, then when Neo is ready, say to go buy it right now.

This is slightly off-topic and isn't a comment about the timing of Microsoft's announcement, but I just want to say how crazy "in-tune" Sony seems to be these days. Everything they say and do is just... so self-aware. It's like they never lift their ear off the ground. I really, really love it. It can't be overstated.

I'll never forget when they first had Shawn Layden on stage a couple of years ago and I thought "who the fuck is this dude and where is Jack Tretton". He's really matured, in a way, and really gotten to know his audience.

This strikes me as such poor business sense that I find myself wondering what I'm missing

Everyone until holiday 2017 who buys an XB1 will be facing the decision of whether to get one now or wait until Scorpio. Dumb.

this didn't bother me at the time but in retrospect it's pretty hilarious. it's like Apple unveiling the iPhone 7 and then teasing the iPhone 8 within an hour of each other

It's more like announcing a new iPad Mini and then teasing a new iPad Pro.

I think CEO Kaz Hirai said it best

This is pretty good as usual from him and on the point. We will see in monthly NPDs but I suspect Xbone will do worse and worse even with S release because of Scorpio expectations.

Everyone knew that Apple will release iPhone 7 when 6s was unveiled but you didn't see Apple at the end of their conference spend time on iPhone 8 releasing in a year and being 5x more powerful. That's just crazy from marketing perspective.

Sony rep is surprised MS announce their console ahead of time. Meanwhile Sony announces their counterpart ... wait for it... ahead of time!

They didn't announce it, they confirmed the existence of it's development.

I wonder if some of their thinking was it might get people who were going to buy a ps4 or neo... because they are more powerful, to wait?

Apple really do announced in the best way.

I will love to see PS4 Neo announce with "available now".
Worked well for the Sega Saturn, right? In fact, it's kind of similar to how the PlayStation was announced just before the Saturn's release and it dampened Sega's hype

There are those that don't have the money to purchase the Scorpio, regardless of it being better.

If you look at this forum and social media I think it proves Andrew's points from both last week and here, It kinda sucks for all the cool XBox games shown at E3 that the only thing people are really discussing about Microsoft right now is what the fuck Scorpio actually is (and to a lesser extent the One S due to that weird comment about new GPU/CPU stuff).

Meanwhile on the Sony side all anyone is talking about are the games.

According to IGN not so much. They were polling people whether they would buy an XBO now or wait for the Scorpio and 60%+ out of millions polled said they'd wait now

As long as they end up in MS ecosystem it's still a win for them, even if it's a delayed one. It's more important for them that those gamers won't go to the competition (PS4 or Neo).
Considering their position in the market, I don't think it was a bad decision to have the announcement now. Had they been quiet until E3 2017, Sony would have had a whole boulevard for several months where they could have played the "most powerful" card. MS only said two things in the end, "6 TFlops, winter 2017", and that's enough to generate some doubt among potential Sony buyers.

Makes sense. They have used the quasi-Apple model for the last two slims at least. Only this time with a spec upgrade.

If retailers can't keep it secret that Dragon Quest 7 might be doing an available now then I don't know how they'd do that with consoles

At least in that case, you pretty much know for a fact that the iPhone 8 will be two years away, with the incremental 7S coming next year. If the average consumer didn't know better, they would have saw the One S & wouldn't expect another Xbox for at least 3 to 4 years. Announcing a much more powerful Xbox for next year isn't how consoles are normally handled. It's hard to tell right now though if Microsoft shot themselves in the foot making that announcement so soon.

Pretty clear MS wants to move on from the XBO asap. Announcing the Scorpio now is MS attempt to build goodwill for the Xbox brand after it has gotten battered over the past few years.

I think we will see at most a 2 week gap between the unveiling and tit going on sale.

When you are releasing multiple products within the same space that serve similar functions it's important to not cannibalise the sales of your existing/old product by there being too big a gap between the announcement and release.

I will take two

oh I agree. consoles are different so it remains to be seen if this strategy will bite them

so it did not work for "them" Major Nelson. At least no major negative impact.

Be careful; I said something similar in the topic about Major Nelson's tweet and got shit on because I didn't get the hilarious joke Major Nelson was making and that I was an asocial shut-in for not laughing at the tweet like everyone else

I think everyone is kinda baffled at the fact that they've announced a piece of hardware that is 18 months out.

So I need to start saving up for a Neo, the PSVR, and a 4k TV? Sony is trying to destroy my bank account.

No one knows what it costs. All the average consumer knows is that the next super powerful amazing awesome revolutionary better awesome power unlocked mode xbox is coming out holiday 2017.

They're being incentivized to wait until then to get the console. It won't stop everyone from getting an XB1 before then (clearly) but it's still striking me as terribly unwise from MS perspectiveto put consumers in that position

MS should want everyone who is considering getting an XB1 to get one, not putting questions in their mind about whetrher it's best to wait

FacelessSamurai

..but cry so much I wish I had some
The thing about Apple though is that no one actually waits for something to be announced as they follow a fixed release schedule for their phones. They are always announced/released at the same time every year. No one waits for the announcement, they just upgrade when they need to as they know when to expect the new phone.

After Sony conference, I'm sure they will stick with "show, don't tell" approach with Neo.
Show games run on Neo, price, release all within 2 weeks.

MS is basically throwing a Hail Mary. I thought it took some balls personally. they might well eat shit sales wise for the next year and STILL end up lagging behind, mega powerful Scorpio and all. after all the OG XBOX was the tech leader too. momentum is key.

When has power ever mattered for console sales? The PS2 sold an insane amount despite being significantly less powerful than the OG Xbox you're referencing, and even the GameCube.

It's about games, marketing, and word of mouth. Power would have saved X1 and it won't turn their sales around unless their messaging also improves.

Sounds like they are indeed going for the very short announce to release time frame.

I'm hoping for an August announcement and September availability.

The hunger is real.

I wonder how many of those would jump in at $499+. Hope someone does that poll.

The two that have been have been in December so I guess this one if they have one will be in December as well.

December would be too late to release the console as it would miss Black Friday and a lot of Christmas shopping. Unless they announce in December and release in February/March but that would still piss off a lot of consumers buying PS4s as Christmas presents.

They'll wait one year and a half to not buy it. It will be ancient news by the end of 2017.

Wait, millions polled?

I'm not sure who these millions of iron-willed individuals are even supposed to be that they'd wait a year and a half to buy an iterative version of the Xbox One when they can buy one right now.
