Demo PlayStation VR at Select Best Buy Stores (Every weekend through December)

Tried it out this afternoon. Got there right before it started and there was 3 people.

Ended up trying Eve. Good experience the lady was dry nice and the headset is amazing. It's very light and easy to adjust. Had to push it down quite a bit to get it to focus correctly.

Only issue I had was I barely looked around for target acquisition. Gonna take some time to get used to looking around when you're actually dogfighting.

Gonna go back quite a bit to try everything else out and take a couple friends and my girlfriend. Day 1 preorder still stays for now.

People must remember when you get the PSVR home. The experience should be better because you have to set it up and the big thing will be IPD(Interpupillary distance), you don't get to do this at tradeshows or these in store demos. They will have a software solution IPD set up, Vive and Rift IPD is manual and on the HMD, Sony solution is not. So remember that when you test out PSVR.

Why will the home version of PSVR be IPD? Did they take it out at the tradeshows and Best Buy units?

I'm confused.

Tried out Eve. Smallish line, waited for about an hour. Rep was super nice.

Yep, I'm sold. My one concern was glasses fit and there were no problems there. Everyone should get a chance to check this thing out.

I'm planning on trying it again for the 2nd time tomorrow. Last week I went to a Best Buy, this time I'm going to a Gamestop because I want to try "The Heist" specifically and get a taste of VR with motion controls. I also haven't tried most other games as well like EVE so I'd like to give that a shot as well. I hope it's not busy. When I went to Best Buy last week their was no line and no other person tried it the 20-25 minutes I was there.

Tried it out this afternoon at a Best Buy location. They had 5 demos - the heading one, Eve Valkyrie, the ocean one, the tank one, and the Thruspace clone. I was told Heist was only at GameStop locations, but it's a bit of a drive to Lenox so oh well. I tried the tank game and the ocean one.

Tank game, while pretty fun, definitely made me a little nauseous towards the end. It's pretty intense having to fight stuff on land and air while dodging fire. The guy who played that after me lasted like a minute before having to quit, while a friend of mine had no issue all the way through. Don't know if it is the tech or just the game design that triggers this, since I've tried other VR games on Oculus that has as much camera movement but had zero issue playing for an hour.

The ocean one was funny. I liked those augmented reality videos that Nintendo did for the Wii U so that's probably up my alley if Sony decides to do something of the sort.

Nope it's probably not out of the tradeshow/store demo it's probably at a default IPD. When you are at home when you first start, just think of setting up your PS4 Camera to log you in with facial recognition, so the PSVR will have your profile built in through software and adjust the IPD to you each and everytime you use it or it may vary from game to game. I just think a lot of people don't realize this when they are giving impressions and fail to realize that the IPD is more than likely not ideal for use, when you playing these games. Maybe that blurry text or texture is a bit better when the HMD is tailored to you instead of a random number.

By the way, just in case you don't know, IPD is the distance between your eyes. For each person that distance is different. When you get your headset it will be tailored to the distance between your own eyes. The default settings will not be ideal for everyone.

I played Rocket League after trying this and all I could think of is how much more enjoyable it would be if I could follow the ball with PSVR head tracking than with the right stick or ball cam.

Why would the distance between my eyes change from game to game?

I have a vive and I can't really tell any difference between the max and min ipd settings. I wouldn't get anyone's hopes up that it will improve the visual shortcomings they experienced in a demo, especially since PSVR's is a software solution.

What resolutions is the headsets???

Man, what was shown on the TV and the headsets were worlds apart.

On tv, it looked 1080p, but in the headset, looked like 480.
I was like..................eeewwwwwww. Everything was so pixelated and blocky looking that things in the distance were just a single fucking pixel in that eve game.

ZThis is the best example of how it looked to me. With the PC picture is how it looked on the TV and the xbox is how the game looked in the headsets.
Ij1xFdc.png

Had the same reaction when I tried it at PSX 2015 last December. The image quality is so much better on the TV than on the headset. Unless there's a killer app that truly needs VR, I think I'll sit this generation of VR out.

Finally FINALLY got to try it out today....and Occulus was in the same store so got to try out both.

First off PLAY BATTLEZONE...BATTLEZONE....

I was in a fucking Tron tank.....I was IN A TRON TANK..... it works, it really works. Also it is amazing how disappointing it feels when you first put on the headset and it really does have that "is that it" feeling (Brandon Jones described this on EZA). , but it is super weird because your brain kind of adjusts and the goggles sort of disappear and you feel very much "in" that world. I was doing the dumb thing people do who havent played games before, leaning left and right to "dodge" bullets. I was doing it...a lot. Really felt like I was in a tank get hit with artillery. The rep was also super cool and we were just shooting the shit since there were only 3 ppl in line. He really knew his shit and seemed genuinely excited about the set.

then I got to try Occulus

Occulus was surprisingly disappointing. The rep felt very (very) scripted and the device was largely uncomfortable, the headset was not wiped between wearers and the demos were just really tech demo-y. I feel like Sony has a good handle on how to show the PSVR to multiple audiences by offering a handful of different demos that range from very passive (the deep) for people who dont play games to very active (Battlezone) for people who regularly play games. Occulus on the other hand had a very "corporate" tech demo-y thing that was "neat" but it didnt feel anymore than neat. It felt very hand holdy especially with the rep chattering along with the demo while PSVR was surprisingly hands off once the rep helped you adjust. The Occulus clearly has the better tech, but PSVR is vastly more comfortable (didnt need to take ff my glasses unlike Occulus which quite literally felt like swimming goggles) and had much better things to show. I was surprised how much the "comfortableness" effected how I played, the headset "disappeared" when I was playing PSVR while the headset in Occulus was a constant distraction.

Got to try London Heist at a GameStop and wow so freaking awesome. I was sold already on VR but this sealed the deal. I was smiling the whole time. I wanted to open the door on one of those motorcyclist but never got a chance.

And I tried your suggestions about adjusting not just the screen but the headset itself and I finally found that sweet spot. So thanks for that!

I've read so many comments about how PSVR is very comfortable to wear I'm surprised neither Oculus or HTC hasn't just ripped off PSVR design, I mean the way it rest on your forehead. rather than strapped to your eye/face.

Occulus was super super uncomfortable especially getting it on right after trying PSVR (literally the guy was like 50 ft away from the PSVR booth). Had to take of my glasses and really tighten the thing on my face. Even then it just felt in the way all the time.

Headhunter (Soccer Game) was great, I liked that my head was the control and the demo was humorous

The display is good but I think the rep didn't clean one side all the way, left side was blurry a bit but the right was clean. It did look grainy though.

Sucks no one has the Heist demo anywhere in AZ.

Need to try that. Tried shark game and eve. Both were great even though I got a tiny screen door effect. Got a good presence effect on both. Eve was great looking around the cockpit, got a small sense of vertigo from it. So far I enjoyed it.

Talked to the rep a bit. Best Buy has pretty strict rules on the type of demos they are allowed to show so Gamestop and Best Buy are showing different demos.

EDIT: Also more people need to try battlezone

Agreed! I played it right after playing Eve and it was so much more fun.

Also, seeing the DS4 tracked in VR was so fucking cool . I just held the controller in front of my face and moved it around for a solid 30 seconds lol.

They were supposed to be at my local best buy today and he apparently showed up for 20 minutes and left. I was livid. I tweeted best buy and actually got a response that they would look into it. Luckily the Microsoft Store had a vive going and I got to try that. It was my first vr experience and it was awesome.

Those are the words I would use to describe the image quality when I tried PSVR for the first time at GameStop a few days ago. If I remember correctly, before the demo started, the white text on the black background appeared low-resolution and wobbly.

I'm obsessed with picture quality, always have been. I won't play video games if I'm not happy with the picture quality of the console-to-video display connection.

I love the OLED's perfect black level, but I was expecting each individual pixel to be crystal clear and perfectly defined.

Just tried it out for the first time.

Having tried out the Google cardboard before, I had my expectations pretty adequately tempered. When I first put it on it was pretty much what I expected, not as high fidelity as real life, but despite the limitations, I ended up pretty impressed.

I tried Valkyrie since I figure flying games and driving games would give me the best idea of the tech and the best experience.

It really began to immerse me as soon as it took off. Flying around and being able to look around you to find ships is a revelation and feels great and intuitive! It's something I have wanted to be able to do in a game ever since 3D became a thing.

It might be enough to make me buy one just off that experience alone if it was like at least $200 cheaper. Not exactly convinced on the games and the tech still isn't perfect, but the experience is certainly cool and has it's place.

Finding that perfect blend of tech, content, and price feels a ways off though. $400 isn't exactly an impulse buy when there are no killer apps and the software library will be a slow burn. I can say I'm converted from more indifferent to excited it hasn't changed my mind on how much of an uphill climb VR will be.

Btw, the PlayStation demo guy was great. He was genuinely passionate about the tech which was cool and helpful answering questions, but also realistic about explaining to people what PSVR is and what it isn't. There was no hyperbole talking up the potential of VR, especially beyond what the PSVR can offer, but I could tell he was genuinely excited about what he saw at E3 and what it coming out soon. It made me optimistic about how Sony is planning on marketing the device because they were just letting the experience speak for itself so hopefully VR can actually stick around long enough for when I decide I want to jump in rather than being a guinea pig for something that I think is cool but undercooked and overpriced at the moment.

I wonder if people who are going to be doing VR several hours a day that have trained their brain to ignore stuff flying at them in VR will have problems with dangerous situations in real life. I mean, that sounds a bit silly, but really how would your brain know the difference between VR and real life?

That....is actually a really interesting question. I wondr if it dampens some of those auto responses like catching a ball just before it hits your face that you didnt see coming.

I've done all of the demos, and Ocean Descent actually gives you the best sense of presence. Well, The Heist is probably better still with the wands, but once the shooting starts, you forget about the "VRness" and just concentrate on returning fire. Which I suppose is also indicative of strong presence, I suppose. lol

But yeah, everyone should try Ocean Descent. Do that one first, I'd say. Then maybe Headmaster after that.

It happens sometimes, employees get swapped out or fired. Last minute cancellation are bound to happen.
I'm pissed because the dates for two stores near me vanished and those dates popped up for one store like two hours away in a town I loathe driving to.

Same here, I waited about an hour at least at the Union Square location and everyone in front of me tried the Playstation VR demo with the shark. Battlezone was pretty awesome, what really tripped me out was turning my head and processing the fact that everything around me vision-wise was the game world. The game itself was really cool looking, not sure if it's going to be a multi-player thing like R.I.G.S or just single-player focused.

I'm also kinda sad RIGS isn't demoed. But yeah Headmaster was legit but I kinda wanted to play EVE but I already did it with Oculus, I forgot the Tank game which had me yelling in my mind why I didn't pick it.

Did it today, no line! Never tried VR before and was already going to buy before trying based on Res alone. I went for Eve. Always wanted VR ever since Lawnmower Man and Blank Check.

I was really really disoriented at first, the controls took a slight minute to get used to but caught on quite quickly. Maybe because I was overwhelmed with detail. It took a second to realize and be let down with how so-so the graphics are. Full field of view, my mouth dropped when looking at my yolk/gauges in the cockpit. My girlfriend said I reached out and almost grabbed my crotch lol

Gf tried the ocean game. She said we gotta get this! So I guess I'll be one of the ones without a pre order begging for it.

Like others have said - it is a sure joy to wear, very lightweight. I could see it being worn for an hour or two no problem.

Having tried EVE, Battlezone, and The Descent, I feel like Battlezone has by far the best gameplay and The Descent has by far the the best presence. I feel like Eve Valkyrie is a jack of all trades master of none. Valkyrie is still fun, but I found the other two were more exciting in terms of the overall vr experience.

RIGS is primarily a multiplayer game (Have they said anything about single player content? All the demos for it at any showing have been vs matches), so demoing it in this format would require multiple headsets and a larger format and training for the reps/setup... much more complicated arrangement... even though the game and experience is fucking awesome.

This and the 4v4 EVE booth at PSX last year were what sold me on PSVR.

This was exactly my experience also. The sense of presence in the underwater demo was off the charts.

They've confirmed that the game will have a full single player "sports campaign" with bots.

I wouldn't be surprised to eventually see a demo of this at Best Buy considering they are adding more demos as the summer goes on. It's a marquee title so I wouldn't be surprised if they wanted to show it off to more people.

Yeah they mentioned they had a career mode with bots sorta like any other sports game and can contract different player with different skills to change how the bots maneuver. Kinda interesting if you ask me.

They did a live stream on Twitch not too long ago and the girl playing the game was playing very short matches against bots. It definitely looked like the kind of demo that could be done in the stores. I was really hoping RIGS would be at these demos but maybe they'll add it down the line.

This is totally anecdotal, but I've used my Vive for at least an hour a day every day since I've had it and games where enemies appear behind you like Holopoint and The Brookhaven Demo still scare the shiiiiiit out of me.

I was expecting my "fight or flight" response to dampen over time, but it hasn't changed in the slightest, which is probably for the better as that could legitimately be dangerous in the real world if you were to lose that response.

I'm confused.

It'll probably still be there but they don't have time to run that setup for everyone.

Tbh I'm still not sure how much difference it makes. I've tried adjusting mine from min-max on the vive and can barely tell any difference.
