Second I don't see the stats in that article, but I'm going to get that there was a percentage that were receptive to rational discussion and a percentage that weren't.

That said, I would wager to guess that a similar result can be found when it comes to the Internet (not specifically Twitter).
He doesn't have to direct people to attack anyone. All he has to say is 'This person sucks.' and his followers descend en masse. Because he has encouraged this kind of behavior time and time again.
