Project Sonic 2017 Trailer (Holiday 2017, PS4/XBO/PC/NX)

Just played and finished Colors for the first time a week ago so I am mostly pleased with this announcement.

But aside from the team working on the game, I found this trailer very worrying, Colors and Generations were fun and lighthearted and this looks like they're trying to be "edgy" again. Pissed off modern Sonic, "Join the Resistance", a burned city, "in the darkest of times"...

Ugh, I had flashbacks to Shadow, I really hate when Sonic Team starts taking themselves so seriously, it's usually a bad sign...

Couldn't disagree more. Unleashed-to-Generations feel like a 3D translation of Advance 2 and the Rush games, and nothing like the classics.
And yes, boost does make playing it feel like a brain-dead experience. And yes, its levels feel like goddamn hallways; feeling even less open than goddamn Advance 2 and the Rush games.

I'm just glad Mania happen else I'd be very disappointed.

SA1 still had some perfectly fun levels. Red Mountain especially comes to mind.
The biggest issue Sonic's gameplay has are the camera and glitches, not the level design.

How many hours did you put in Generations to reach this terrible conclusion? 1 min each?

Generations has some of the best fucking stages in 3D. But I won't even try to stress this point, people who actually played the games knows this.

The only problem with Generations are the bosses.

I really can't tell if this is Generations 2 or if it's Sonic Adventure 3 with a Generations tinge to it. I can easily see Adventure 3 with Classic Sonic as a character.
What if it's SA3 in all but name you get to play as the "resistance"
Sonic
Classic sonic
Tails
Knuckles
Etc

Ooooo baby no complaints would be had. Sonic mania would still be a thing and adventure would still live on

Played each level twice. Some thrice. They're just boring, man.
The custom stuff though? Plenty more.

Give me a more polished take of pre-Unleashed 3D Sonic gameplay any day.

That's a really, really bad trailer. Game will probably be pretty good though, I can't imagine them screwing it up too hard after getting Generations right and seeing both Wii U games fail.

Someone at Sega must really love the Sonic 2 final boss, they have used this design so much.

Sonic 2, Sonic 4, Sonic Generations and now Sonic 2017. Its probably in another game too.

An idea

What if you have both Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic in every level

And at any point in the level you can do one of these:

And switch from 2D to 3D on the fly?

That's just so weird tho. Why go out of your way to make two separate games if both of them are essentially going to be 2d. Like if you watched the stream they were separating the two the entire time.

Just looked at the trailer for Sonic Mania, it looks so much better.
I'll be open minded until I actually play the game of course, but the obsession of Sonic Team with a dark and edgy Sonic is so unfuriating sometimes. He's a goddamn blue hedgehog!

I will never understand how people can complain about boosting in the Unleashed style games and then praise the level design in the Adventure games, even though there's a ton of boost pads in the levels that do the same fucking thing. Not to mention Adventure 2's idea of level design being to fill 60% of the levels with grind rails.

Lost World, Final Egg and City Escape are pretty much the only decent levels in either Adventure game because they actually cut down on that nonsense.

Err

But we already know Classic Sonic is in the game? So 2D sections are definitely in the game.

Here's something that might be of concern.

So the main promotional image for Sonic's 25th Anniversary has been this:

No big deal, right? Sonic Boom Sonic is just there cuz they're still making games and cartoons with him, right?

But then in this scene from the trailer of this game where you see a wide shot of the city:

RKgomyV.jpg

There are 3 giant Death Egg Robots.

That implies there are 3 Eggmans, and if there are 3 Eggmans it would be likely the 3rd one would be Boom Eggman and he's joined by Boom Sonic.

I really hope that's not the case.

Are those in-game models or something? That Classic Sonic in particular is missing a lot of the post-prod stuff these CGI renders tend to have.

Plus teeth.

They threw classic sonic in there so why not. Get em all

I would have liked to see a great Sonic game, similar to Generations, that let us play as Tails and Knuckles as well.

Hopefully this could be it.

Shame Lost World was mediocre, it had some of those Sonic X-Treme ideas that look interesting but ultimately didn't executed it well.

I really hope that's not the case.

What gameplay style would that bring? He'd have the enerbeam mechanic and move slower? Would it be 3D exploration levels similar to Unleashed's Night segments? I don't get what the advantage of adding Boom Sonic would be, besides legitimizing the Boom brand. Which might be a big enough incentive, I suppose. It could give them a chance to "rewrite" what 3D Boom means.

I dunno, those giant eggrobots don't look like they're manually controlled because of the look. They have one eye instead of two and they don't look very much like Eggman.

I still want to say they're sentinel types like the bad future in X-Men where sentinels are all over the place and pretty much rule the world.

I guess the dark stuff is to show Robotnik az a menacing villain again (didn't people want that?).

It's still look bad though, but I doubt the final game will be like this.

Also they skipped Lost World at the trailer lol

On the bright side of what might be yet another shitty 3D Sonic, we now know absolutely for certain what the NX console's minimum power level roughly is.

I don't think so. I mean, with Classic he's mute and cute so you have that playing off the interactions with Modern cool Sonic. What would Boom bring? Post-cool? Tryhard? They'd be the same character and it'd be weird.

Plus I think they are just generic Eggman brand mega mechs and not three different Eggman piloted mechs. Like, this is one city in this world destroyed by some of his mechs while Eggmen sit in their Eggmen Land castle/space station/amusement park combination.

Lmao this is a stretch. Sonic Team has nothing to do with the Sonic Boom brand and if I remember correctly they don't even like the designs.

Sonic Mania could tie in to this game (classic Sonic that is) since its hinted that Dr Eggman has all the 7 Chaos Emeralds and a fully functioning Death Egg. Probably why we see 3 giant Death Egg Robot Mech walking around destroying the city

I think the game will be fine.

Generations with 60fps and fine tuned controls and better levels/bosses would be great.

That said, shit trailer. Looks like it was slapped together last minute though.

I think you made that up

Nope. http://www.gamespot.com/articles/sega-explains-sonic-and-knuckles-new-look/1100-6418328/

"We experimented with different colors and surface features on the characters, such as fur or scales, and quickly Sonic Team came back with their discomfort of that. They were great guardrails for us to understand when we were deviating too far from the character. Without their input, the character would have been a lot more alien and different from what Sonic is known for."

They didn't like the initial designs of Sonic Boom.

Where is this information from? Is there an interview I missed?

Don't you fucking tease me like that Sega, I KNOW that you're not gotta do jackshit with the Freedom Fighters ever.

Yeah, I doubt they'd go ahead with something as cool as even letting the comic writers have an advisory role, but riffing off of the idea seems like it could be cool. I mean it seemed like the reason the Freedom Fighters were even invented was because the early games did somewhat imply Robotnik as a powerful menace, and Sonic as a plucky underdog. As long ad they don't go overboard with this premise into becoming overly serious, it could be great.

I didn't like how Robotnik has become basically incompetent and unmenacing ever since Sonic Unleashed, so bringing some danger into it is good. Just bring more cyberpunk-ish cities and fortresses into it and less burning cities. Conjures memories of Sonic '06, and that's no good.

To be perfectly honest, this looks like the usual trash we've been getting for years. It's a CG teaser, so we can't really get a good understanding of gameplay. The tone isn't true to what made sonic great.

You said they don't even like the designs..seems they didn't like the first concept designs not the current ones

I said IF I remember correctly. I remembered slightly wrong but at some point Sonic Team didn't like the Sonic Boom designs so it wasn't something I "just made up".

Wasn't one of the cartoons about a resistance? It's supposed to be a good cartoon I think (never seen it myself) so maybe they're trying to invoke that.

Interestingly it looks like they might even be retextured and resized versions of the same model from Generations with different heads.

I kinda thought it was just 3 of them rampaging the city without any control. I sure hope Boom Sonic isn't in though.

I'd be shocked if Boom Sonic wasn't in this somehow. Probably would be the late game twist like retro Eggman was in the first Generations.

At the very least he'll be a cameo or a skin for modern sonic. They have to appeal to that newer fanbase somehow I'm sure. Which is fine, the show isn't to bad.
