NYT - Is Donald Trump a Racist? (Spoiler Alert: Yes)

The whole "he's not really racist, he's just pretending" thing is some sort of mass rationalization- I just can't figure out what people are trying to rationalize and why.

I mean, some people think he's actually a Democrat trying to sabotage the GOP — that he's only playing the part of a racist or white nationalist. They want to rationalize it away instead of accepting the simple answer: Trump is a racist sociopath.

I'm actually thinking of a specific person in this case. He is highly autistic and requires full time care but loves everyone. Still he votes straight republican ticket because of a racist family member.

I think that this is so specific that it's the exception to the rule.

Even if people who support Trump are subconsciously racist and have never read a thing in their life that would make them understand that they have racist tendencies and they lack the self reflection to think "Hm maybe my fear of Hispanics has something to do with racism rather than facts?", it is pretty much safe to assume that Trump's appeal is tied to his racism. They can be diet racists. Fine. Still racist!

I mean what do you want us to add an asterisk stating that all Trump supporters are racist, xenophobic or bigoted or misogynistic excepting if they're mentally challenged or autistic? What semantical hill is this to die on?

"The vast majority of Trump supporters are racist"

Doesn't seem to be that big a change and is actually reflective of reality.

One of my co worker's said he's trying to look past all the bullshit and really focus on the policies of both candidates before deciding.

I'm like really...

I'm convinced there are just people who have been not be paying attention AT all to this election cycle. Trump is serious danger.

That doesn't necessarily make them racist, though. They could just hold their nose on that account thinking his other qualities are still better than his opponent's, just like a pacifist could vote for Obama knowing full well he isn't one.

Because racism and pacifism are so morally comparable.

So the establishment type? My parents are Republican, hate Romney, voted for him anyway because they did not want a second Obama term. Believe it or not it's a choice we are allowed to make, name calling won't make a difference. I never heard my dad once make racist remarks about his employees and he has a wide variety of ethnicities that work for him. I must not be listening close enough.

Voting for a racist fascist is endorsing racist fascism.

WHAT DOES THIS CHANGE

This isn't like saying "ALL Black people are like this." Voting for Trump while knowing his thoughts on and ideas for minorities is a voluntary action.

If you vote for a racist because you think racism is not that big a deal, you are a racist in denial.

Wow every single one?

Yes.

Every. Single. One.

If you support a person like Trump at the very least you enable his racism, xenophobia, homophobia and general bigotry. If you enable those ideals, you adopt them via proxy, ergo you're a racist.

If you support Trump, no matter what, you're a bigot. It's that simple.

I mean, even Jeb! is considering voting third party, and I would've thought he would follow whatever the GOP tells him to do.

I don't think they care what the other side says about them, just like you don't care what they say about you.

Now if a fellow Republican were to address them with that logic, that's different.
Oh they absolutely do, because they spend an endless amount of time bitching about "liberals" and get incredibly offended at the accusation that they're racists. Probably because the truth hurts for them.

Yes it does. Again, not openly or silently voting for a racist is the surefire way to not be perceived as one. Racism is a totally different ballgame than pacifism.

Of course he is. I mean look who he brings out of the wood work. Fucking David Duke is running for congress again because of Trump.

Ask him why he's supporting/voting for a racist if he's not one.
"Because we are Republicans and I will never vote Hillary". But it's ok I'll pass along to my father that some kid on the internet just called him a racist, in which he will laugh and then Go back to talking about his excitement for a justice league movie coming out.

Making the wrong choice leads to innocent deaths and lots of needless suffering, so kinda?

Certainly as political issues they should both be given massive amount of weight when weighing candidates. A person could easily claim the moral high ground electing a racist over a warhawk.

Problem is the Republican platform is usually the worse of two evils on both fronts so it's a moot point.

Yes?

I question the existence of the category "too dumb to be racist."

Yea normally i would let ignorance be considered for general politics cause there's a lot going on there for people who aren't paying attention. But right now we've got this guy famous for being blunt. and he's received tons of coverage to say that stuff over and over again.

I don't really care if Trump supporters feelings are hurt by this accusation anymore, cause f em.

Tim Kaine spent a big chunk of his career as a civil rights lawyer, largely representing minorities in housing discrimination cases.

Interesting contrast to Trump. Seems like maybe something that will get some play in the press.

In the midst of all the policy flipflopping and backtracking when he gives his real opinion (that's not in line with GOP orthodoxy), one thing has remained constant.

That's what everyone does though right. When your friend posts that racist gif. Or your family member says something racist. Or you friends make fun of someone. You don't disown them on the spot or block them from Facebook.

You silently rationalize it. Not really wanting to look right in the face who you keep company with. Eventually you even start to believe it

And then you vote trump

I see a lot of Trump supporters saying the following, "I agree his comments on race are uncomfortable, and I don't think he means them, but that's not why I support him anyway..."

Which is an incredible thing to just sweep under the rug anyway, but even if I gave them the benefit of the doubt, the rest of his "platform" is incoherent garbage that he flip flops on almost daily anyway.

They also tend to say things like:

He's a great businessman: Objectively false.
He's not going to take big money: Objectively false.
He's against the establishment: False and getting falser.

So you either support a racist, or you're an idiot, and there isn't a lot of middle ground. He's so bad and indefensible in fact, that it's unlikely one of his supporters will even bother showing up to refute this. And it should be easy to refute if it's false.

So he will willingly vote for hate?

in 2016?

He's still voting for a racist.

He's rather do that then not vote third party or not vote at all?

He'd rather vote for a racist because he thinks its his only option?

Then that's a problem. He has a choice, and he's siding with a bigot. He's supporting the platform of a bigot.

also, lol "kid", that's cute buddo.

Maybe you should push it a little harder than that. Doesn't it bother you that your father is a racist? I mean, that's how Donald Trump got his start being a racist.

If you vote for a racist because you think racism is not that big a deal, you are a racist in denial.

A lot if not most of the people voting for Trump are probably racist, but to say they all are? Some of them are people who've had it drilled into their heads that Clinton and her ilk and their approach to trade and the economy are responsible for their lack of employment and the circumstances they live in. They think Trump is the man who can bring them their jobs back. Some of them think the democrats are unwilling or incapable of defending against terrorism or maintaining American military dominance. Some of them think Obamacare is the first step to a socialist takeover of the government that will only continue under Hillary.

All of these things seem ridiculous to us, but there are large portions of the elecctorate that take these things seriously. A lot of people in this thread holding some absolute positions on this that I don't think are accurate or productive. Not everyone is as informed, nor do they have the same priorities or even see the same realities.

I'm not talking about two sides arguing like children in a playground on the safety of Facebook.

I mean two people, grown adult conversation
I'm talking about real world discussions in person.
Is someone really going to sit across from another person and say "well you're a racist John because you're towing the patry line"

If you vote for someone who is racist and will advance racist policies then you are racist. You are voting for the further expansion of racism. You are not just complacent in racism, you are active in your support for racism. It doesn't matter if racism isn't your concern, you are voting for it.

Yes I would.

Especially since major Republicans with a lot more at stake then your average GOP voter are managing to not fall in line.

If the party line is one of racism and bigotry then yes.

No, they are gonna start the conversation with "So, do you think the Supreme Court Justices Trump nominates will be sympathetic towards the issues of minorities?"

Now that's a good conversation starter.

First of all, when people irl tell me they support Trump, they most definitely get an earful of reasons why he and subsequently they are racist and not once have they ever been able to refute my points. So stop this "hiding behind a computer screen" rhetoric that has nothing to do with the discussion whatsoever.

No personal offence, but people with these views are probably worse then racist. Its like if you're voting for your actual ideals, as messed up as there are, I feel like there's at least a cold logic there.

For someone to Kanye shrug on problematic views because it doesnt effect them/they just dont care is pretty much why some of the bigger modern era atrocities happened; minority group full of evil pushing the agenda, the rest can't be bothered.

Because its probably easier to change someones problematic world views through debate/facts logic then to beat general apathy towarda your fellow man.
