A shootout took place in Las Vegas early yesterday morning when a man and a teenage accomplice tried to rob a group of people playing Pokémon Go.

AP reports that the pair, in a large SUV, drove to Gary Reese Freedom Park, which has become a popular Pokémon Go hotspot in the city.

They approached a group of six people playing the game, threatened them at gunpoint and “demanded their possessions”. One of the Pokémon Go players, however, had a concealed weapons permit, pulled out his gun and a shootout ensued.

I didn't see this topic posted yet, so lock if old.

Felt it was worthy of discussion since all the shooting stories recently have been very depressing.
No one died here and the "bad guys" lost. So, feel good story right?
I'm about to be told I'm very wrong.

8 people at least with 2 gunman sounds terrifying

At least it sounds like no one was killed and maybe only one of the robbers were shot?

Uh... Interesting story but it definitely isn't the "feel good"-type.

A feel good story is like a cat learning to roller skate or a baby juggling. Even if the good guys won, it is still sad as fuck that a fucking shootout ensued because some assholes tried to rob some people playing on their phones.

With his handgun withdrawn and pointed at the assailant, he flipped his hat around and with a nervous smirk said that practiced line,

"Gotta Catch Em All. "

Real talk though, probably didn't handle that situation the best, but at least it seemed to work out.

Civilians are pretty bad at descalation, so pointing another gun could have gotten bad real fast.

I feel good about it.
A story showing guns can be used for defense, not just murdering people (the narrative I tend to hear the most).
The only thing that asshole did to the 6 or 7 people with him was get them involved in a shootout.

I'd rather just be robbed.

I guess if you run into the wrong PokeStop, don't expect any Super Potions.

What a weird thing to feel good about.

The fact citizens had to defend themselves from other citizens should make a person feel, at the very least, disappointed.

I'm glad you found your unicorn. The overwhelming proliferation of firearms will continue to shape the "narrative" as long as it's reality.

I don't feel good about any of it. The fact that someone tried to take advantage of people playing a game and attempt to rob them doesn't feel good. The fact they would brandish a weapon doesn't make me feel good. The fact that a shootout started in a freaking public park where anyone could have been struck doesn't make me feel good either.

I guess if you look at everything through NRA-tinted shades, I guess that you could find something to feel good about.

FWIW, I don't have NRA membership and fundamentally disagree with them that we don't need more gun control laws.

Because we do. The gun show loophole has got to go.

"I feel good about it because it reinforces my shitty politics."

As an actual independent, not beholden to any established political party, I have awesome politics thanks very much.

A SHOOTOUT ensued. There's nothing good about that.

Question: Would the other players have grounds to sue this guy for needlessly escalating an armed robbery to a shootout?

I mean, if I had the choice between getting robbed at gunpoint, or being put in the middle middle of a shootout between two other people, I, personally, would take the robbery. Every time.

A 500 dollar phone isn't worth gambling my life.

EDIT:

What you've neglected to put in the OP is that one of the non-aggressors was struck in the stomach by a bullet.

Idiot gun owner put everyone in danger.
Instead of losing a $300 phone, now has ~10k hospital bill.

I yield the floor.

This reads like a parody. If not, then it belongs on /iamverysmart/.

Edit: aww, you edited out the part about people being drones. How come?

A shootout where no one died and the robber is likely going to jail where he can't use a firearm to threaten and possibly shoot anyone else.

till the broken system let's him go and he illegally obtains another fire arm...

I decided it was too over the top and my intention wasn't to belittle people for following their political party's ideology blindly...but rather distance myself from any idea that I'm some right-wing cook.

Hey, sometimes armed robbers kill the people they're stealing from. It's not always as simple as "Give the phone up, and you'll be fine!" Sometimes it's give the phone up, oops, I'm also dead. Someone in my town just got shot in the head, after a break in, she didn't have a gun. If she did, shot the intruder, and lived, the narrative would've been "She should have just let them rob her, her life isn't worth the belongings in the house." on here.

Eh, the percentages on that heavily skew towards 'give your phone up and you'll be fine', but it definitely depends on far too many factors.

Definitely not gonna draw on someone though, especially in a group

Sounds more like an issue with the health care system.

Even if there had been no injuries (and apparently there were), this is most definitively not a good type of story. It shows that when people has wide access to guns, they can easily put everyone on danger, for pretty much nothing.

Also, the month is full of stories on how much problems have the success of Pokemon Go caused in different countries. It will eventually settle up (you hope), but kind of wonder if Nintendo ever put that much thought when they commissioned the game.

Ok, I laughed.

Do you think more people get shot for surrendering their wallet than those who reach for a weapon?
