Why are gamers so obsessed with meeting other players in games when it will literally add nothing to the game?

It adds so much to the game. You're exploring a huge universe - going from one planet to the next. In the back of your mind, as you're about to reach the new world: the exciting, however improbable, possibility of encountering someone is in the back of your head.

Is this time going to be it? What do I look like? Are they going to kill me?

It's that unnerving possibility that as you're exploring a landscape you might see someone in the distance and that it isn't an NPC.

Pretty much. Just plainly state the game isn't ready to support the feature. Done.

Very disappointed in this crap.

Murry is sleazy and so is his non response.
They have been deliberate vague from early on about the actual features of this game.
You can either see players in real time of you can not. Just answer the question.

We don't know that all of the online functionality has been discovered. You may not be able to see other players but there may be other possibilities. Isn't that a worthwhile type of excitement as well?

Well considering the servers are down and hammered that might as well be the issue. Also there might be some lobby/phasing errors due to it.

I don't think it's definitive yet, but the game is rated for SP.
However they did say something along the line of "you can't see yourself only others can see how you look" a while back if I'm not mistaken.

This isn't surprising in the least. I'm not sure why people were optimistic for multiplayer when they always avoided the question anyway.

As is often the case with Neogaf and gamers in general, people need to calm the fuck down and take a step back for a moment.
Take a step back and...? Can't speak for others but I'm perfectly calm. It's still pretty shitty.
You know you guys can step outside your house and meet people.
Amazing post. Thanks for adding to the discussion.

Why? It would be SO easy to confirm or deny from the devs. They refuse to do so making people expect things that are not there. The people who are going to or have bought the game deserves to know.

Or maybe (just speculating, don't hit me) there's not 18 quintillion planets after all? Or maybe the pool of starting planets is just relatively small.

well why would the starting galaxy have all the planets in the universe in it?

Let's say there is online functionality that are secrets and intended by Hello Games to be discovered by players themselves. What would you have them do?

48 hours ago. It's a single player game, the odds of you ever seeing another player is pretty much zero.

Today. Wow, two players were already on the same planet.

Happy for Sean that the game is successful even though I wish he would be a tad more clear in his answers.

Give a simple yes or no answer without telling players how to do it if it's SO secretive and hidden despite the prior words from the dev about how it's supposed to work. Over the years "Yes there's MP, yes you can grief and see other players." Day before release. "Don't expect multiplayer." Day of release "Wow people found each other our coders are so good!" Like holy shit this dude needs a PR team ASAP because he's not a good speaker and is seemingly compelled to only give vague answers instead of direct ones.

Say YES. And then no other explanation. Because they have already said its in there and so far it's been proven wrong.

The prospect of meeting somebody in such a vast universe is fascinating, don't you folks think? Especially since it's being hammered over and over again how small of a chance that kind of encounter happening.

It's not the kind of game, I know, but I am honestly really disappointed that the multiplayer aspect of this title is so small and insignificant. Seems like such a perfect setting for gaming sessions with friends.

Especially since stuff like Elite Dangerous is exclusive to Xbox :( and I don't do PC gaming where these kind of games seemingly have found a resurgence of some sort :(

Confirm outright if a player can be seen in another players world, but don't say how it is achieved if it's a gameplay mechanic.

Not even just two players. Two streamers who were able to communicate that they are in fact in the same place..

I am pretty sure that they would include and expand the multiplayer, but i really think that they don't want to say nothing that clearly before they know how, when and in what way it will be included.

I understand that some people would be mad, but he said clearly few days before the release that the game is single player. Now is vague because he don't want to annonce it in all details right now. Just wait. Remember how secretive he was about the day 1 patch, at the point that everybody think that it was marketing BS. He delivered greatly with the patch.

This is a strangely popular (by that I mean, I'm not sure how more than 1 person could actually think this) view that people share. Is it sarcastic? In this case, by definition of "literally add", meeting another player in your game will literally add another player to your game. If the point of the game is exploration - and by extension, finding things - isn't finding a living player following the same goal as you exciting?

Honestly it may be a server issue.

For example when Bloodborne launched (and DS3) a lot of the multiplayer stuff was broken due to what I imagine was stress on the servers. You could touch a bloodstain and have nothing happen and summon signs are super inconsistent.

I'm curious. How can two players meet each other when the game tells me that I'm not connected to the servers? And I highly doubt I'm the only one right now. With other words, before we all jump to conclusion maybe we give it another week? Servers are down anyway

Mostly playing devil's advocate with this post. But I find the tug-of-war between discovery and pre-release hype interesting, especially when it gets mixed in with unconventional multiplayer. And also they haven't said what's at the center of the universe, could be something huge. Also from a game developer point of view I don't see why they wouldn't just answer yes or no, so in my mind it must be an unconventional implementation of "multiplayer" that they want to keep secret.

Say YES. And then no other explanation. Because they have already said its in there and so far it's been proven wrong.

Say yes...but they've already said yes? The only thing that has been proven wrong is that you can see another player in the same space as you at any moment. There could be some sort of instancing thing, there could be an item for it, who knows? They've already said: you can meet other players but it is very unlikely. If we take him at his word, then that can still be true.

Confirm outright if a player can be seen in another players world, but don't say how it is achieved if it's a gameplay mechanic.

They have done exactly that.

They have said you can come across other players but it is extremely unlikely.

I don't recall seeing anything about griefing other players. All I've ever seen from them is "you technically can encounter other players but it is very unlikely."

These new tweets sound very much like "talk a lot and maybe the problem goes away".

He doesn't tackle the main issue. Come on! You can say things like "we're looking into it", "they didn't see each other because of server issues" or "sorry, they can't see each other in real time". This is like:

It sure as hell might be but then why doesn't he just says -

"hey, we have a problem with our servers, seeing other players should work soon" ?

It is so obvious he is talking about "meeting" another persons discoveries, not seeing another player. The game is not an MMO, its a single player game with discoveries being uploaded and shared procedural generation.

The fact that he is vague about his definition of meeting (and outright lying in some interviews claiming you can see the actual player) is just for hype.

The game does not even require ps+

Jesus fucking Christ he has previously said that people can say each other, and now he is saying the servers are overloaded, and still people want personal postcards.

"Yeah I know what you said, but do you REALLY love me?"

Why would you believe him now, as you didn't believe him the first time? :D

Sean Murray seems like the kind of person who says "maybe" when you ask them what type of food they want for breakfast.

Wow thanks I spit all over my tablet laughing at this comment.

I'm picturing Sean Murray at a table in ihop being asked what he wants today and he just lets out a "maybe" lmfaooooo!

Probably because he doesn't say "people can see each other but currently server issues are preventing that". Look at that I combined two of your sentences together and it only took me a few seconds.

Because he did confirm it several times
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AE0nuW-mQ8A

I'm aware, but there's always been the caveat that it'd be so rare that people might as well not care. They were always trying to dissuade people from getting excited about multiplayer. Never have they spoken about it as an exciting thing to try and track another player down. And seeing as there's a centre of the universe which a lot of people are likely to visit, the reality of the likelihood never seemed to line up with their messaging. I'm sure the centre is still a large place, but it would certainly not be an impossible task to find somebody else there.

Recently, they've only been saying that the chance is very slim, with no mention of contact actually being possible. There's really no reason to be so vague if multiplayer is an intended feature. It would be a selling point they'd happily exploit. People are buying this game in the mere hope it has multiplayer. I imagine there were more waiting to see the reality of the game before actually purchasing it.

And also we know from the back of the box and the steam listing that is in fact a single player game.
