Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Technical Test Impressions (XB1/PS4)

Don't really know where to ask this and Google isn't giving me any confirmation but will there be splitscreen like COD?

All they had to do was take Tf1, add the grapple hook, make some more maps, then spend the rest of the two years making an incredible single player campaign.

Make some cosmetics to bring in money.

That's it, job's done.

How'd we end up with this.
And, despite them saying they're making changes based on feedback, we're nine weeks from release. Balance changes maybe, but they'll be feature complete by now.

/waves to didact, hi didact!

and yeah, this video is a perfect example of the amazing gameplay loop R1 created.

and this video, from GC 2016, explains why Respawn lost their way:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyryweXyBxA

- AI are annoying and don't have a purpose? [what?]
- rodeos are annoying? [WHAT? so many ways to deal with these]
- everybody doesn't just GET a titan? [WHAT WHAT WHAT?]

seems like they literally just listened to the biggest whiners / complainers on reddit and neglected to consider whether any of those people actually played the game for more than a few hours...

Fucking hell seeing that interview..you need to earn a titan..the fuck? Why is this game called titanfall 2 again? I want to play a damn titan not being on the ground the whole time as in call of duty. I remember why they made this game to do something different and fresh, they did do that but now?

Rodeos i love it because i can shoot a damn titan..the AI was useful because to fuel your meter to get an titan asap.

Said it earlier here and i will say it again replaying Titanfall 1 and played even if it is a tech test for titanfall 2 they lost there way on what made titanfall 1 great..

Goddamn ... this. This so much.

Titanfall 1, despite not having that much content, was a blast to play. I played with friends all the time and we'd call in our Titans when we all had them. The sound they made when crashing onto the field and the amount of chaos that ensued when the enemy team saw it happen was brilliant.

How can Respawn say that the AI is annoying when it's something they introduced? Feels more like some of the try-hards got their asses whooped by some random AI breaking their neck ... come on. I understand that some are frustrated by the AI or get killed randomly but removing it all together? Doesn't make sense.

Titanfall 2 AI models could be replaced with giant steaming turds. They move out of the pod and do ... NOTHING. Same goes for a "Titanfall". You call one in, move around 5 seconds and get absolutely annihilated. Shame. Sure, a skilled pilot could take down any Titan ... but this is a game called Titanfall! It should focus on Titan vs Titan. The way a Pilot takes you down is ridicilous.

Also ... why does it feel like I'm running around with a fucking obese pilot? Whenever I jump onto the wall it's like my ass is slowing me down?

What the hell happenend Respawn? Did you guys suddenly forget that you left Inifnity Ward because of creative differences but still feel the need to create a COD game?

MAKE TITANFALL GREAT AGAIN. K. THX. BYE.

This game does nothing for me in the slightest. I played maybe 4 matches. I played a ton of the first one when it came out, but maybe it was just because it was new. T2's traversal and locomotion doesn't even come close to feeling as good as Blops 3 does. That game feels so much more fluid in its movement and animation throughout the level. The aiming is maybe my second biggest complaint, and thats that it feels way to hard to aim and not comfortable at all.

Given that the first game had pretty much one weapon per category, and seeing this games beta has the same gives me no hope for weapon progression and experimentation. Without that i am just focusing entirely on just the gameplay, which is pretty mediocre. If this game didnt have a single player i would have completely written it off. So ill wait to see what critics have to say on the campaign.

good game, not as good as the first

They learned all the wrong lessons. Changed things that didn't need to be changed. Sales/community problems were a function of the lack of content and XB1 exclusivity, not bad gameplay.

It's like channel drift, the game.

It really blows my mind how much they changed. Like was there ever turmoil when developing the first TF within the team, people that wanted to take the game in another direction? Like the everyone gets a Titan was a solid foundation in the first one, and yet here they completely threw it out of the window.

Is there some change of leadership? Done by another team within Respawn, since they're also working on a Star Wars title?

I just really don't get why you would change so much of what made TF good and unique.

I enjoyed pre-aplha. The variety in Titans is good. There will be a sword based titan too. They have to improve the maps, reduce titan spawning time and increase hits taken to die. Nerf the goddamn SMG.

In short, make it like Titanfall 2 and not like COD: Mechs and some Parkour

But it is CoD with mechs and some parkour, which is a even less impressive now that CoD has aped the near future sci-fi and some of the parkour stuff. It feels like a Call of Duty mod more than its own game.

It's also one of the most boring visions of the future I've ever seen.

It's still pre-alpha. Hopefully they change it by the time game releases or postpone it to Q1 2017.

Been listening to some youtubers impressions.. man are they depressing. Optic Midnight starts off with how much she loved Titanfall 1 etc.. for a week. Then says how it feels so similar to Titanfall 1 and goes on about how much she hates the Titans and wish they weren't in the games.

It's no wonder this is how the game turned out when Respawn listen to people like that :( You're playing a game called Titanfall and uhh... want the titans removed.. like wtf? I get she's mainly a CoD player but come on.

Have they said if its a new download for next week or same client? Or if it's all same stuff?

Have to assume it's the same stuff because next weeks game mode was released early and didn't have to re download.

I still cannot fathom the logic of changing the game's movement (the one thing everyone seemed to love and what set the first game apart from every other FPS). What were they thinking?

If you read the Keighley piece (Final Hours of Titanfall) it seems like a lot of the old Infinity Ward guys weren't actually involved in the development of the first game. It seems like they were mainly concerned with the Activision lawsuit stuff.

It's a really good read, I highly recommend it.

Maybe the old guard, who are all CoD guys, started having an input on development... and we ended up with another CoD game.

I remember I LOVED titanfall 1. I can't comment on mechanics or changes made between the first and the second, but I am not having that much fun.

I got bored after a few matches and I'm really not interested in buying it anymore. Is it because this is a bad game? Or am I just not wowed with TF since the gimmick has worn off?

Yes, it's very sad - like trashing your own kid.

"You need to earn a Titan this time so you'll appreciate it."

Which COMPLETELY goes against their philosophy with the first title (I posted a link earlier). Everyone should be entitled to a Titan - both Pilot and Titan are important pillars of the franchise. Titan's should never be a "reward." A player should never go a full match without having the ability to use their Titan.

It's just dumb and reeks of something that's been polluted by complainers that will only play COD anyways.

I'm looking at old Titanfall 1 videos and this is simple one but getting into a Titan seemed cooler because it stayed in first person view.

Why did they change to that that third person camera angle for Titan entry?
It's way more underwhelming!

It's a silly change and sucks any immersion right out of it.

That is one change I can't see any possible justification. 1st person was so cool and immersive. 3rd person just looks cheap.

I loved sliding into my Titan and watching the hand scoop up.

How many maps did the first game have and do we know how many we can expect for this? Did they say whether any old maps will be returning?

15 maps in the base game and 9 more added in 3 DLC packs. Most of the maps were really good, but I think the last DLC pack was kind of shit though.

And the slide, slide is awesome in 2. But yea they just needed to add all this new stuff to TF1, not completely change all the mechanics.

It's a strange change, especially given its Call of Duty heritage, wherein the game does all it can to maintain a first-person perspective throughout.

It worked especially for Titanfall. Entering a Titan, having the inside be dark, then seeing the screen turn on. That punctuated the moment of entering a Titan so well. The game jumping out to third-person, just to show a two second animation, doesn't make sense.

Maybe they're going to do more Pilot customization, and want to give people opportunities to see their character in-game? That's my only explanation.

As a huge fan of the original - which is, along with Splatoon, the best shooter of the current gen as far as I'm concerned - I was honestly pretty disappointed by what I played.
I mean I had fun (a lot more than at E3, where the game really didn't click with me), but this is nowhere near the awesomeness of the original.
They changed a lot, to the point that it almost doesn't feel as Titanfall anymore (the first game was so unique and original, way beyond the "Call of Duty with mechs" idea that lots of people apparently had).
I'll still buy it at launch, but considering that this is the sequel on steroids to one of the shooters I loved most... boy, that was underwhelming.

What a shame; maybe I'll pick up the game down the road for the campaign but I'll be passing on my initial plan of grabbing this day 1 for the multiplayer.

Yeah bizarre they went third person.
It also appears to me that it stutters quite a bit with that camera entry.

Looked smoother in TF1, but I haven't played it so can't be too sure.

My impressions:

Played a few bounty but mostly hardpoint.

I really liked the game.
Maps should give more wall-running options though.

Speed is fine when wall-running and using the grappling hook. Problem is, the hook is crutch slot for me. I can't see myself changing it to something else.

I couldn't care less about which animation is first or third person. This is the least of the problems (or not a problem at all actually).

Getting titans is quick enough. But you have to play aggressive. It is just like ults in other games. For me it is a good balance between scorestreaks and giving it for free equally to everyone.

Pilots stand a better chance against titans. I particularly liked it. Escorting a friendly titan is a good strategy, giving it cores and shooting other pilots.

I hope people hover more around objective modes rather than on bounty hunt (though it is objective-lite oriented).

Played about 20 games over the weekend. I loved TF1 and sunk 100 hrs into it. i was really excited about the new game, including the campaign, so i jumped in just to get a taste of MP.

Impressions:

Graphically it's much smoother than 1

The speed is good, particularly stringing together moves involved the grappling hook

Only managed to call down a titan 4 across 20 games, spending about 15 seconds in a titan in total, getting annihilated almost immediately each time. I hate the new method of "earning a titan" rather than getting one on a timer, but earning it quicker in TF1.

Titans seem to have been totally nerfed compared to TF1. As a pilot, I found it really easy to kill titans in this game compared to TF1.

It's a lot less forgiving for new players than TF1. The joy of TF1 was you could contribute to the team score by killing grunts, securing objectives and dodging players until your skills developed. This chucks you in at the deep end, which is a lot less enjoyable. I guess bounty is their stab at achieving this but it isn't as good.

The maps seem pretty barren, with wide areas of nothing which, for a game that barely gives you any time as a titan, means you are usually traversing open areas of nothing for ages, looking for targets.

The game seems to have lost the joy of going from pilot, getting into a titan, blowing stuff up, losing your titan and bailing, then carrying on as a pilot. In TF1 you could go the whole match without dying, recycling that process, even as a relative beginner. In this you get into your titan, get griefed and the titan explodes before you have a change to bail. Even if you bail, you're unlikely to generate another titan within the match.

When hard-points/locations such as the bank appear on your HUD e.g. A/B/C etc, they tend to float about in the general direction relative to the way your facing. However, there is no way of immediately knowing which is nearer quickly without having to spin about until each way-point letter is directly in front of you, then a distance in metres pops up. That;s annoying,. Can't they just have the distance underneath the letter at all times? Having to spin back and forth to judge which point to go for wastes time.

Overall, it has definitely lost something compared to TF1. I'll have to have another go but the balancing seems way off at present.

I agree. it made we want to play TF1 in the end. Still, give it time. I'll probably ene up getting this for SP if it;s good but keep playing TF1 for MP.

I played all the way to level 11 or whatever the max was.

Gotta say I liked it quite a lot even though the shooting felt very CoDish which isn't necessarily a bad thing I guess.

The titan action feels fresh to me since I've never played the original, but reading through this thread and hearing how much better R1 is makes me a little worried for some reason.

Will play again next weekend. Not sure if I'll buy it.

As an absolute beginner, completely new to the series, I had no trouble earning Titans. In terms of my background, I'm a big Battlefield gamer (1942 onwards), and I've never really played any COD games online apart from a tiny bit of COD4 back in the day.

Here's some footage of me playing Bounty Hunt, you can see pretty clearly that I still had no real idea about how to properly traverse the map at this point, and you can also see pretty clearly that I'm not exactly an MLG Pro. I still got three Titans in this round (which my team lost, so it's not like I was riding the coattails of some dominant players or anything):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD5qRDGXEpE

In terms of earning Titans on Bounty Hunt it is mostly fine due to AIs, the bigger problem is the lack of AIs on other modes, and one-dimensional Titan combat in general.

Performance. In TF1 the 3D cockpit that surrounded the screen was part of the titan model and therefore the camera could move straight into it.

In TF2 they have made this surround a 2D overlay, as it keeps the poly count lower (TF1 dropped lots of frames here), so they cannot have the same transition in.

Oh, that's an interesting explanation - albeit saddening we won't have 1st person anymore. I never minded the dropped frames for something that looked so cool.

I did not enjoy Titanfall 2 at all... I adored Titanfall 1 and played the shit out of that game but something is just not fun about 2.
