Super Mario Run announced for iOS (Android later), Dec 2016, Screens/Info in OP

Is anyone really feigning surprise? The most obvious easy effort the second they announced they were relenting and becoming a third party pub for smartphones.

Rayman Jungle Run will probably remain the better game though because that shit is tight.

One day Nintendo will go back to lovely 2D animation but obviously not for these refried beans.

I know what you're trying to say, but it's a tad ironic to complain about Nintendo reusing assets when the Rayman Run games are almost entirely reused assets.

That Rayman runner was easily the best game I've ever played on my phone. I loved it. Definitely looking forward to this.

I'm certainly liking the way Mario is animated in this. Looks like a lot of polish for a mobile game. Also, like others have said, it looks really similar to Rayman Jungle Run, which was a fantastic runner game. I'll have to look into this one.

Really? Thats a serious question?
They can release their games on Xbox or PS4 but then why would people need to buy their consoles?iPhone isnt a competitor

It's a direct competitor to the 3DS and NX. It could very well be that the NX has more in common with mobile gaming than AAA-console gaming, so third party on PS4/Xbox One isn't that crazy anymore.

Care to explain yourself? Or is that just a quick, low quality bait?

Care to explain? Okie doke, it's a crap iOS game much like Pokemon Go, that is literally milking the nipples of Mario/Pokemon because it shares the same name.

Its more the fact it's a big deal too. Like they could of just thrown it in as part of a montage or some shit. But no wheel Miyamoto out on stage, it's huge. It is huge in terms of significance where imo Nintendo are heading /headed.

Course everyone will lap it up, purely on the name.

Why would they want to put it on a platform where they would make nothing?

Nintendo would make insane amounts of cash by bringing their games to PS4 and/or Xbone.

Just like they're going to make insane amounts of cash from Mario being on iOS/Android, to keep things on topic.

would they though? I'm sure the initial novelty would get them some sales but how much crossover is there between people who like Nintendo games and the X1/PS4 crowd? we know how games that appeal to the latter audience sell on Nintendo hardware and we also know how things like platformers do on X1/PS4. the iOS/Android audience is much different than the X1/PS4 audience and is a better fit for Nintendo's offerings.

if Nintendo really did decide to go 3rd party iOS/Android and PC would be the most logical choice, not X1/PS4

I think I was more surprised to see Miyamoto on stage than the actual game announcement since we saw that coming since pretty much day one. Watching Miyamoto on an Apple Event was surreal <3.

First Mario on the Olympics and now Mario on the Apple event. Nintendo is killing it with increasing their presence lately. Hope they continue that way!

I think the next big exciting thing for Mario is the upcoming Universal Parks announcements, construction, and then opening.

I think it looks cool and you can already see Nintendo's experience in level design showing through. This will only help the brand.

Yeah, this annoys me with things tbh. Companies simply seem to prioritise iOS because it's perceived as being more popular, when the stats show it isn't.
I think iOS may actually be more popular in Japan though I believe? Maybe? Could explain their reasoning there if that's the case.

IOS is prioritised because although the userbase is smaller its more willing to spend money and revenues are usually higher there.

What I want to know is did Apple give Nintendo a kickback for the iOS first or is this of Nintendo's choosing?

Maybe. But Nintendo has been pressured for a long time by investors and shareholders to bring their IPs to iOS devices. Since like the launch of the App Store.

Nintendo just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about 2d Mario Culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is on mobile devices where you can become successful by releasing endless runners. If you screw someone over who loves 2d Mario game, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the Nintendo fans, after hearing about this, are not going to want to purchase Mario for either system, nor will they purchase any of Nintendo games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Nintendo has alienated an entire market with this move.

Nintendo, publicly apologize and cancel Mario Runner or you can kiss your business goodbye.

lol you beat me to it

There's quite a difference between "runners" and "endless runners".

Runners are games like Rayman Jungle Run which have properly crafted level, and endless runners are the randomly generated currency grinds which people think of when they hear "runner".

This is a properly crafted runner in the Rayman style with levels and things, and by Nintendo at that, so I have faith in this.

Look up the stats for paid apps and piracy on Android. Piracy is so huge on Android that I understand Nintendo in not supporting the platform for a paid game. If it comes to Android, it will probably a F2P game.

I can't imagine Nintendo software selling a whole lot more on the PS4 or XBO than it sells on the Wii U or 3DS.

Keep in mind the customers that want to play Nintendo software own Nintendo hardware.

The customers that aren't interested in Nintendo's software likely own another platform.

I wouldn't imagine that there's a significant amount of crossover between these two groups.

This is bullsh at the top it can be. Mario games on console are different by far. People know the different. This is the best thing they can do now. And as nintendo said: the next console mario will be sync in time.

It'd be amazing if this tied in with Mario Maker and you could make runner levels on NX that people could play on on their phones.

Great exposure to be at the Apple Conference and obviously tactically it's great timing to upstage Sony a bit. This will lead the Tech pages alongside Apple's new stuff.

This also explains why they didn't reveal NX this week if they've had this announcement lined up for a while.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.

I'd drop my pants for an endless runner re-using the Wario Land Shake It sprites.

Umm... whats a,runner? Not mobile savvy.

A runner is essentially a 2D or 3D platformer where the player character is always running forward without player input. The player then presses a button, or touches/swipes the screen, and the character will jump or change direction in order to avoid obstacles.

Most of these games are endless runners, which go on forever until the player fails. A good example is Canabalt, which basically jump started the genre.

Runners are a good fit for mobile devices because of the simplified controls.

Some runners forgo the infinite gameplay of "endless" runners by instead making discrete, designed levels that have defined beginning and endings. The best example is probably Rayman Jungle Run. I prefer these games, because they have actual level design, which is very important for platformers. Super Mario Run seems to be one of these kinds of games.

Welp, I fucking saw this coming a mile away. Anyone who thought Nintendo was going to take mobile "seriously" is delusional. They're just gonna be making cheap, simple games that are really just marketing tools for their dedicated gaming software.

Is there any gameplay footage anywhere?

Disappointing but expected that they'd use the NSMBU look, but I'm on board nonetheless. The Rayman runner games are good fun so I'm sure this will be too, providing that the price range is reasonable and the Waluigi skin DLC is affordable

So long as they still have consoles to sell, I don't see why they'd do otherwise.

Reaffirms Nintendo's pricing strategy for "full" releases. Dials back expectations for Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem.

It seemed like a very obvious direction for Nintendo to take ever since NSMB2 had the runner-esque mini-game.

The movement almost looked like something I'd see out of a Mario vs. Donkey Kong game. Makes me feel like it'd be more suited for the mobile platform.

You honestly don't see how this is a big deal?

We've known for a while now that they are making mobile games. In light of that, Mario has been everything from Olympic licensed video games to teaching typing having a mobile game isn't mind blowing.

If this was NSMB3 sure, I'd understand but this is a pseudo-endless runner reusing assets.
