No 4K BD support

Still getting the Pro, but this makes me really glad I jumped on the XB1 S when I did.

Pro-tip: How to make RedRedSuit want to buy it:

1. Pick a very good-looking 30fps game (e.g., Uncharted 4).
2. Show it running at 60fps and otherwise unchanged on PS4 Pro.

Anything else... any talk of 4K... etc... pointless for me.

Quoting to show i agree.

I don't use my consoles for Media Playback anyways, since I always get a dedicated player.

But Pro having 4K disc playback at all is just absuuuuuuuuuuuuuurd

Now for a sudden BR playback will become the most requested feature for a gaming console .. Lol

Just like DLNA before ..

I'm seeing a lot of confusion. Are we getting native 4k support or is it going to upscale to 4k? I'm seeing people going both ways on this.

Does this even matter? Who buys physical movies in 2016? I don't know a single person who does
It matters if you actually want to watch 4K content on your 4k TV...

4K streaming services have a bitrate similar to 1080p Bluray... Not the same.

I haven't owned an Xbox console since the OG RRoD... But now I'll be buying an Xbox One S instead of the PS4 Pro...

It's cool that they're bringing HDR to the base PS4 but maybe they shouldn't have used it as the main selling point of PS4 Pro.

And no UHD Blu-ray is a real WTF.

In for that SWEET PRO downsampling.

I hope I can trade in my current PS4 + 150~200€ for the new PRO one.

Ok this guy can stream 4K content, so no need for 4K BD support...

Yeah! 4k Streaming that can't even hit 2k blu-ray video quality.

If your argument is no one buys physical media.

www.blu-ray.com would like to talk. As would amazon.

Where I work, tons of people still buy DVDs!
The only reason if you don't buy physical is most likely you don't give a fuck about video quality.

I think these things apply to such a small crowd. Definitely won't make a difference to the average consumer. IMO

I have two PS4 consoles. One is the original day one normal edition, and the other one is an unboxed PS4 Destiny Edition white console !!

I am sorry, but I find the original consoles have much better design than the pro console !!

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
Potentially for Sony First parties and the biggest AAA games, but I can't see most devs bothering to do much with the 1080p performance
They will, because everyone does it for PC anyway. It's no extra work to re-enable effect you had to disable on PS4 but already have running on PC/Ultra setting, or to re-enable shadow resolution back to High etc.

At $399 and a year's head start, it's going to do very well against Scorpio. And (outside Japan) NX is pretty much dead even before it's been officially unveiled. Not that should be any surprise to anyone.

Missed opportunity to have the Slim at $299. At $249 they would have completely cornered the low-end market. Seems like they are pretty much send it out to die, taking launch PS4s with it.

I was on the same page as you before the reveal, now I'm not so sure. They stayed so far away from OG PS4 comparisons that I literally could not tell what was different with the Pro besides 4K gaming. Unless Sony are willing to show how the Pro will improve games side-by-side with the regular version, I'm not sure consumers will even know that it's better than the Xbox One S.

Wow so this was dishearteningly disappointing. So basically just 4K and HDR wankery? Multiplatform games with PC versions will have some better assets than the normal ps4 versions? Wow I was so sold on this on paper but they just completely unsold me on this. No mention about framerates etc. Which make me quess that there are none to talk about regarding that. And mostly just 10sec snippets that I can't even "see" properly because I don't have a 4K display.

Wow. Please tell me people won't defense force this decision?

Crazy, and opens the door to more Xbox One S sales for sure.

not defending the decision. The impact on sales though for the One S with or without a 4k BD player on the PS4 Pro will be minuscule to non existent

Lol how many 4K Blu-Ray's are you all planning on buying? Come on.

If I had a 4K Blu Ray player? More than I currently am.

I'll probably get an Xbox One S, but c'mon, I'd prefer the device that's going to actually be hooked up and considered a premium to have it.

I'm honestly shocked that Uncharted wasn't shown at 60fps, I really thought that was going to be their big "And look at the older titles!" thing.

It's more insulting considering that the games aren't even going to be native 4K. Temporal 4K is still great and not as much as a performance hog, but already people don't understand the difference, even here in GAF.

I don't get the logic of anything else really. This thing is for "pros" (hardcore gamers). PS4 games look good. They have nice visuals running at a crisp 1080p in the vast majority of cases.

Ask any hardcore gamer what is lacking in PS4 game visuals.

You'll get the same answer every time: 60fps.

So if you're going to do this half-gen thing, why aren't you focusing on that?

I hope they allow developers to improve the framerates; kind of seems like they're dodging the question which is kind of worrying.

I'm not impressed, if you don't have a 4k TV (a majority of consumers) there really isn't much of a reason to get this thing (let alone upgrade if you already have one), I was expecting there would be some kind of new feature (HD support, backwards compatability, IDK SOMETHING!) but its all just graphic quality and with the money to buy a 4K TV and a PS4 Pro you could buy a 4k Monitor and a gaming PC and get better graphics out of that then what 4K can really do.

I didn't expect any big game reveals (not this close to TGS or PSX) but they could have had better games to show off besides freaking Shadow of Mordor of all things.

Welcome to what everybody has been saying for MONTHS. The first part anyway.

The second part is pure bullshit. There's no way you'll be able to buy a 4k TV and a 4k capable gaming PC for the same price. You would need to downgrade to a small monitor, but then why the hell would you even do that when 4k content on a big TV is kind of the whole point.

I'm not sure why anybody on Gaf was surprised. But, Gaf gonna Gaf I guess..

Anybody that was expecting Sony to sell them on a new console if they weren't already convinced it was for them is a bloody idiot. Your disappointment is on you and you alone.

I'm glad the overall gamer consensus is that we just want our hardware to run the software flawlessly. 60fps, no graphical hitches ect. I want the devs to utilize the house power for things like that as opposed to 4k. Let's get those priorities straight. 4k is nice and all but making a game run smoothly is so much more important.

This post isn't by me, it's by a guy with the same username as me.
While I don't want to believe, but don't doubt that Sony could shot themselves in the foot like this. DO we have another source about the no 4K BD player?

Is it confirmed in like: "I talked to someone at Sony/saw a specsheet and it isn't there" or "It wasn't announced in the event, so there's not one"?
