The World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) has condemned Russian hackers for leaking confidential medical files of US Olympic athletes.

Athletes affected include tennis players Venus and Serena Williams and teenage gymnast Simone Biles.

A group calling itself "Fancy Bears" claimed responsibility for the hack of a Wada database.

Wada said in a statement that the cyber attacks were an attempt to undermine the global anti-doping system.

Russian government spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was "out of the question" that the Kremlin or secret services were involved in the hacking, Russian news agencies reported.
The hackers accessed records detailing "Therapeutic Use Exemptions" (TUEs), which allow the use of banned substances due to athletes' verified medical needs.

Fancy Bears, which is also known as Tsar Team (APT28), has pledged to release confidential records from other national Olympic teams.

The hackers published documents this week showing that Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Simone Biles received medical exemptions to use banned drugs.

The antidoping agency confirmed the authenticity of the documents in a statement Tuesday, attributing the hack to a Russian cyberespionage group called Tsar Team, also known as Fancy Bear.

The United States Anti-Doping Agency said the athletes in question had sought the requisite approvals to take typically prohibited substances, and that none of the drug positives constituted a violation.

Athletes with particular medical conditions may apply for special permission to take banned substances; the list of such prohibited drugs is updated each year.
The International Tennis Federation confirmed that exceptions were granted for Serena and Venus Williams to take substances included on that list, certifying the organization had approved them.

“In each of the situations, the athlete has done everything right in adhering to the global rules for obtaining permission to use a needed medication,” said Travis T. Tygart, president of the United States Anti-Doping Agency. “It’s unthinkable that in the Olympic movement, hackers would illegally obtain confidential medical information in an attempt to smear athletes to make it look as if they have done something wrong.”

I feel a shit storm coming. Russia coming after U.S athletes and nothing is sacred.

This is going to be interesting. I hate to dig into someone private medical history, but I would love to know what Simone was taking.

I was kinda hoping the harsh stance towards Russia and doping would result in a backfire like this. Always suspected most top level sporters are involved in doping and thought it's hypocritical to point the fingers at Russia.

Just shows how terrible Russia is

So people that go through the correct legal process and let everyone know what is going on, should have their privacy and rights violated because you don't like how Russia did things wrong?

Damn fine hoops, damn fine

The exceptions can be silly. All those heart conditions and they're athletes. Asthmatics, what are the odds.

Nothing to see here at all then. Good try Russia.

Meaning they did it through the proper channels...

I find it funny people actually buy this. That these "conditions" are so severe and legitimate yet they can somehow compete as world-class athletes in the mean time as long as you give them the a-ok to use illegal drugs.

If they were legal exemptions, then who cares?

The exemptions shine a light on how ludicrous legalized doping actually is though.

If anyone even tries to compare this with the Sharapova case I'll slap you in the face myself.

They're not completely incomparable. Sharapova (iirc) had a medical exemption for meldonium while it was legal. Unlike the cases presented here though, she used it after it became banned.
That said, unlike Sharapova, they did nothing (legally) wrong.

isn't going to stop conspiracy theories about wada favoritism. especially if other athletes can show proof they were turned down for similar reasons. also depends what drug they were taking and if that is seen as a big performance enhancer.

I don't think it is as sensational as it sounds. Basically they have medical reasons for taking something that needs to be approved and disclosed it. So it wasn't like they were doping under the table or anything.

You realize that not every banned substance is a PED right?

aside from this being a typical Russian smear garbage hack, there's nothing wrong with what the athletes did.

It could be something as simple as ephedrine that is in asthma medication and getting an exemption for it. They aren't giving exemptions for women to take testosterone or nandralone or anything like that lol.

I'm not saying anyone did anything wrong until more information. That being said if some quack Doctor gave Simone some BS medical condition to let her take PEDs then I consider that cheating. If she has a medical exemption for allergy meds then no harm no foul.

Serena has had a well publicized, life endangering, and verifiable injury and illness in the last decade... so yes?

Stop being a ass.

State sanctioned doping programs with FSB support to drill holes in walls and swap samples really seems similar to a few pre-approved exemptions based on legitimate medical issues.

That seems like a reasonable stand to take.

A friend of mine won the 100 meter dash in my state and went on to compete in college. Found out his sophomore year that he had a heart valve that was producing at 1/4 the efficiency, and was the source of issues that dated back years. With the proper heart medicine, he was cleared to continue running.

So yes, just because you are a world class athlete doesn't mean you don't have ailments, illnesses or problems.

So they had access to the whole database and released exactly three files?

Seems like a good way to make something innocuous and common look scandalous.

Wasn't that Venus (auto-immune disease), or did Serena have something too?
