There was a fantastic early Game Maker's Toolkit episode about what is so brilliant about Toki Tori 2 but it also gives away a lot of the jaw-drop gameplay revelations by explaining it. So it's one of those cases where there is such a thing as a gameplay-spoiler. Watch are your own discretion
Or maybe just listen and try to immediately forget what he says in case you get interested in playing it yourself.
Agreed. Don't watch the video, but play it (if you like exploration and puzzle platformers). I got it in a bundle and was very surprised by the game's quality. I hated the art and thought it would be a short arcade puzzler. But it actually excells in it's niche.
yeh sleeper hit for me this year. One of my favourite jrpgs in a very long time and I even liked it more than the pokemon games, which I am a huge fan of.
Mount & Blade Warband and Fortune Summoners. Though I'm not sure I consider Fortune Summoners accurate it would have still made me interested never the less.

Well, is this one of those Nier situations where reviewers need to hurry and review games on the quick and thus never get the experience that gamers who actually put in the time get? Or are Steam users too kawaii friendly?

RPS has a Wot I Think review. It helped me decide when I was on the fence.
I for one will always vouch for the game because I thoroughly enjoyed it. I dare say that I enjoyed it more than Abyss Story but I think Abyss Story has more polish. Fortune Summer's combat is less snappy and takes a bit of time to get used to much like learning timing in Souls or Borne games, just because you're familiar with one doesn't automatically make you good at another and this is especially true when you go backwards in the series where mechanics aren't as finely tuned.
The game IS old though and there are some modern luxuries that are sorely missed. There is some backtracking and this is particularly painful when you need your allies only they fell in combat and you need to go home to revive them. The journey home is dangerous as fuck most of the time by the way. Still, when you get a tough area done it is exceptionally satisfying in a similar way to defeating tough bosses in other games. It felt pretty nice when I completed a portion of the game and got the little victory jingle.
In some ways it reminds me of the first image in this thread featuring Ys. It is niche and probably a little intimidating and not for everyone. Some people will make the game look easy but most of us will struggle, often with even the most basic of enemies. I have so many enemies' patterns memorised yet I still struggle against many of them and there is still some delay and hesitation when I meet certain enemies. Fuck the harpies. Fuck the kangeroo too.
There is a guide on enemies with tips. You can see some nice little gifs
of everything that kicked my ass
in it.
The loli stuff... Yeah, its there and it doesn't really hide the fact that these are children. That said it isn't awful either partly because they are children. They aren't at the shonen/hormone raging age yet so it is actually quite tame and cute at times.
The localisation is done by Carpe Fulgur who did Recettear and I think it is another top job. I enjoyed the humour even though it was often childish.
