Day 1 Patch for Gears of War 4 (Disc Only)

This isn't a problem on PS4 though. I don't think I've ever played a game where I've had to wait more than about 30 seconds for it to install. What are Nintendo games like for day one patches?

That's because you aren't playing the patched version of the game.

Pretty much standard now, now sure why we need threads about this. Is it bullshit, 100% yes, but expect this and larger going down the road.

They really pushing for that all digital future, huh?
Guess what, as long as I can only pay 42 Euros for the physical version rather than the 59,99 for the convenient digital version that I can't even lend to a friend or sell, I'll take any patch you throw my way. Even with unlimited downloads at 200 Mbps...

They're referring to the substantial install time you see on Xbox One games on top of the patch times.

PS4 has an install-in-the-background while you play set-up for a lot of games, so you don't have to wait for the whole game to install before your play. Some games still make you do a full install (GTAV comes to mind), but it's a more efficient solution for a lot of games. Still have to download the patches too of course when they're big, but it at least gets rid of one roadblock.

Probably sound files for languages you won't use but they give you no option to not install them.

Yeah, there really needs to be language choices when it comes to digital downloads and installing. Don't high quality audio files take up a huge amount of data? It's crazy to be forced to download everything. This needs to change.

My Xbox has been pulling like 30-40MB/s on downloads so that isn't horrible.. it's still a shame that almost every new release has 8+GB's of patches day one. Midnight releases aren't really a thing for me anymore because of that.

To be fair, most of the PS4 physical games I've played required the game to install for much longer than the initial 30 seconds for the game to be "playable". (Uncharted Collection, Black Ops 3 and Batman come to mind).

Xbox One games are often playable as well before the install is complete, but not as quick as PS4 and I still allow both to complete before starting them anyways.

I fucking hate buying console games now. It takes like 40 minutes to install and then after that I need an 11gb patch? When it goes at like half the speed of Steam that makes playing a game on Day 1 pretty much impossible.

Pretty much. The "plug and play" excuse that always comes up doesn't even exist anymore. 2K17 had a day 1 patch that took me 5+ hours to download and it was 6GB. It takes me like 5 minutes to install a 10GB game on PC

I liked how Nintendo had the Xenoblade Chronicles X data packs available for download to your system prior to the game's launch. https://www.destructoid.com/you-ll-...icles-x-data-packs-before-launch-320691.phtml

It seems the other publishers could do that with some of these Day 1 patches ...

Retail versions like this are getting worthless with outsourced game content like happened before on the Masterchief Collection because they are too big. For a collector this is really depressing. You are probably better off with a download code for the extra PC version.

Honestly at least for me, my XBO download speeds are top notch. More so than Steam.

My d/l speeds on the XBone are also way better compared to PSN, but the difference is often negated because the XBone patches I've experienced--primarily via First-party games--are usually way bigger. I just reinstalled Halo 5 and MCC, and the pair of them took me half of an entire day to install b/c of the MASSIVE patches. I think Halo 5's was like 40GB's?

I can confirm that, I recently got the digital version and the download was like.. 92GB. :/

Not really a patch. But Halo got alot of free content after release in terms of dlc. So that racks up the size now. :)

Back when Halo MCC the developer hinted that the OS doesn't support two disc installation. It's probably still the case.
Eh, they've got smart engineers, with all the shit they pulled out of their collective ass already I'm sure they can figure out how to get two-disc installation up and running.
Besides, isn't the Bioshock collection shipped on two discs?

Bioshock Collection was shipped on two discs as two different games. The same as Sony's bundle with Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls.

This is such bullshit. If your installs are 30 seconds long then you have the best PS4 on the planet. I'm not saying it is nearly as long as xbox 1 but 30 seconds. Fuck bullshit.

Thank god I upgraded my internet, 6 megs and 12 hour install times can suck it. Though I still buy the physical media and just put off the update till the disc installs.

MS need to sort their servers out, the fastest I can download off them is like 70Mb/sec, and that's not for the full duration of the download, more like a rare 5 minute block in an hour or so of shit speeds.

Whereas on STEAM or Battle.net I get a solid 160Mb/sec.

True, it is less than ideal but price is the biggest reason to go physical still. You can often get a deal on new physical games, but rarely on digital (for AAA games at least).

Yeah. I get a neat discount and something physical for less money? Easy choice.

I suppose some day I'll embrace all digital, just not ready yet.

It does get rid of a roadblock, however it is totally understandable why they choose to have the system that they do.

Xbox does this as well! As noted, this doesn't help when you have a patch file though.

Game patche size expanded so much this gen. Changed to unlimited Internet cap to accommodate for cord cutting, but I would have definitely run into overage uses so many times.

That said, my preload is ready and I'm excited about the four day early start.

Ugh makes me want to go digital. Xbox installs are slow as heck and surprise they havent fixed that yet, even on the Xbox S but 79.99 ultimate edition from bestbuy too good to pass up.

Shit... maybe I'll drop my physical Ultimate Edition for a digital copy. 11GB is a bit hefty for a patch considering I want to hop right in.

One of the reasons I went digital. I feel like you don't get the whole game anymore when buying them physical with all these mandatory day one patches.

I have been buying digital only for like a year so this not a problem for me. To be very honest though, after Halo 5, this is nothing lol. That was some real bullshit

Bought DOOM a couple of weeks ago for PS4 and I had to download a 20gb patch.. over a 3.5mbps connection. Patches last generation on Xbox 360 were just a few megabytes, what the fuck happened!?

Multiplayer content. Same for most of the big Halo 5 patches.

Patches now-a-days are far more substatial in what they contain. Often changing a lot more or adding a lot more than the previous gen. Like I feel like more games now can get complete overhauls via patches than last gen.

It might not support disc switching, but it does support 2nd disc installation, so it's nothing to do with that.

That's like saying it supports more than one different game. The Bioshock discs are completely independent of each other.

My 500 GB S is crying and I've only had it a week. Gears Ultimate Edition, Halo 5 and the Forza demo and my hard drive's almost 50% full.

Buy an external hard drive and never have to worry about space again. 500GB being the standard for these consoles is a joke. They should have started at 1TB when they knew games were going on 50GB each.
