This is nintendo seemingly positioning itself as a secondary console.

again its the Wii U but stronger, actually portable, and ideally with all the handheld and console guys in one basket.

This in theory should solve some of the Wii U's main issues.

- 3rd party will atleast try for a bit. Its no PS4 , Pro or whatever...so not for long but at least initially it should get most ports with the "benefit" mainly being for the portability for those who want it. Those who don't, probably already have a PS4, PC or XB1 any way...so again as a secondary system, it should have an appeal.

- The constant droughts SHOULD no longer be a thing. Nintendo or its partners should have a game or two a month, which is something Sony or Microsoft can't say all the time.

- Normalized controls. Never was a problem personally but many felt the wii u pad was unwieldy.

- The portability. Yeah Yeah yeah, Iphones, and Ipads. I get it but as shrinking as it may be, there is still an audience out there. Especially if Sony does not have a Vita successor, that audience and those games (as small as it may be) have to go somewhere. Personally, I am excited for Japan. I love my 3DS and Vita but often wished I could play some games on my TV....

Not seeing a Wii Level hit. but one should never expect that again. Don't even suspect this will hit normal Nintendo handheld levels (hope so) but if Nintendo doesn't Nintendo it up near launch and bungle it, they should have a much better start than their last two launches. Gotta hit that price (250 seems "right"....lower would be neat...I suspect 300 which is fine for crazies like me but naw otherwise), battery, and launch lineup but most importantly the lineup after......

I'm excited because I don't care about power anymore, I have a PS4 and PC (and XB1....) so it not being top of the line is fine with me. I am in for the games anyway...but yeah I feel much better about this than the Wii U...even if it is just what the damn Wii U should have been in the first place.

No fuck ups pls...Nintendo...pls

Do you guys not wear seatbelts in the back?

This whole picture is insanely stupid. Who is going to hear anything out the speakers except the driver whose head it is next to? Kids will be hunching out of their restraints to peer at the screen when they could have instead just been given a pair of 2DS consoles. It is batshit insane. The whole thing is.

It's like a console for ants.

The people thirsting for AAA 3rd party content already have a XBone, PS4, or souped up PC by now. Aside from Nintendo IP, the portability of this thing is the key selling factor. If you're not in the market for either of those things, then oh well.

The portability by itself isn't really the key selling factor, it will be the fact that you can play *games* that you're interested in on the go which will be the selling factor. If there's no decent third-party support, a lot of people won't be interested regardless of its portability unless they're all hyped to play games on the go that they're not interested in? Doubtful. The Nintendo software will mostly appeal to the Nintendo faithful and maybe a portion of the casual crowd who remember having "a bit of fun" with that Mario Race game on the Wii.

The thing is, Digital Foundry only really focuses on one aspect of gaming - graphics.

They tend to overlook what many people prefer - fun. At least that's what Nintendo is counting on.

yeah they're talking tech off the trailer. but the physciality of sitting around and playing videogames on a tiny 5 inchish screen really isn't going to change. You can have fun on a big screen or a small screen. How practical it is another thing.

Here's the video. I enjoyed their chat if nothing.

That's a big question they'll need to answer. If it turns out this can run Android apps, the whole concept might make much more sense. Of course, it'll probably be a Nintendo curated store, not straight up Google Play.
I think Android is pretty much out of the question since it can be rooted so easily.

Aye. TBH all of Ninty's games on one console along with, presumably, Monster Hunter 5 will be enough for me. It looks quite slick as well.

Barring any major cock ups (leaving the base and joycon base out of the box, high price and so on) you'll have my sword Nintendo one more time.

Is there any information on how the battery works on this thing?

The detachable controllers:
- What's their battery life
- Can they connect wired when detached
- Do they only charge when connected to tablet
- Does tablet need to be charging for the controllers to charge (if so that's horrible)

The tablet itself:
- Can it charge without the dock (say if I bring the tablet only to Uni or plane, can I charge it)
- Does the charger on the tablet (I hope it has one) use the same cable as the dock?

Looks...different. The controllers look tiny in local multiplayer mode.
Do you guys reckon the Switch has the potential to take off like the Wii?

I was almost certain the dock would increase the performance, otherwise what is this BS:

"We are afraid that other Will copy us If we reveal it early"

Seriously wtf, can anyone tell me what the difference is compared to the psp with hdmi out, except the detachable controllers that they have overlooked?

Why that big nasty dock, just a simple hdmi out would have been better and I could have connected a 720p hmz-t3 oled with ease on the flight etc.

It better be some surprises left hardware wise

Who would dump their PS4/XBox One just for a bunch of ports that could be gotten in systems they own already? And that's not even including the upgraded PS4 and XBox One will be released in the near future. I've always said that Nintendo sticking with a PS3/360 level hardware with the Wii U was stupid, when they could have gotten the first next gen system back then, but this time it's far too late for just another console like that. The timing just wouldn't work.

This. Never will understand how anyone could think present-day Nintendo would survive playing the same power race as Xbox and Playstation. Those platforms already have established online ecosystems and user bases, not to mention the fact that we're already halfway through the generation. Nintendo would have nothing to bring to the table outside of what's already been done by their competitors.

I think this is far and away the best direction they could've gone in. And offering unique features in their hardware will differentiate themselves from their competitors enough to where this thing could be a huge success.

I love your posts.
I must say, it's a pleasure to read about your opinion, and I agree with you.

I think Nintendo's biggest strength is in their software, and they can adapt to whatever hardware they made to produce great experiences.

I just wish this hardware would be a bit less gimmicky if that makes any sense.

But again, thanks for your posts.

It makes sense, but I feel there's a slight contradiction when it comes to Nintendo's roots. Nintendo have always been able to create great experiences on the hardware they make - all those excellent games post GCN are proof of this. In that respect, I would contend they really haven't deviated all that much from the NES.

Of course, if the hardware isn't appealing to you, then Nintendo sticking to their roots is kinda a moot issue y'know?

And it's cool. I'm not really one for dogpiling, so I'm thankful you don't find my responses to be as such.

I wish I could find the post with the custom themed controller adapters. I though it was brilliant.
Much better than the plate themes, plus they can really have a meaningful impact in gameplay.

I don't think a Wii level success is possible or can even be foreseen like that, but I think they could surpass 3ds level sales, as long as there aren't any stupid design decisions among the still unconfirmed elements like price and lack of) touch screen.

I'm pretty confident that the Switch will run at a higher frequency while docked. I think people just made the assumption there was a second GPU in there, like they've done many times in the past.

Do we have any indication of the Switch using pressure sensitive triggers? I imagine not considering recent Nintendo controllers, but I'd love to be wrong

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is officially just slated for a"2017" release. I remember a lot of confusion at E3 about it being a launch title with NX (now Switch) in March.

Why are people thinking the dock will be separate? They are saying this is a home console first. Without the dock, it is not much of a console. I anticipate two different hard drive sizes and a pro controller console bundle.

Have they confirmed if the dock contains a hard drive? It looks a little bulky to to have a couple ports on it. That would lead me to believe that they'll sell a hard-drive-less version ala the 12GB PS3.

I'm in. I appreciate off-TV play with Wii U more than I expected, so I'm happy with the hybrid concept. The key for me will be battery life.

No, I believe the storage is on board the screen like a tablet. I imagine it will probably have a sd card slot or something. There are two USB ports on the side of the dock and the rest of connections are on back. You can see the cables running to the TV in the video when the guy playing Zelda in the beginning goes to pick up the screen.

So what are we thinking, bundle wise? My guess:

Switch Basic Set: Tablet, Joy-Cons, Joy-Con grip (Japan only)

Switch Power Set: Control Set + Dock

Switch Deluxe Set: Control Set + Dock + Pro Controller

I think they will release the system with Joy-Cons $249

Dock with Joy-Con grip $99

Pro Controller $60

PSP with HDMI still wastes the battery of the PSP while you're outputting to the TV.

The Switch dock charges the battery.

So, that's one thing that is different.

Maybe you should chill a bit lol

I'll take that to mean "no more than $299," considering they've never released a console above that price.

at USD price point I assume? isnt that the cost of a PS4/xbox one?

I mean I get this is a different product, different market but they seem about a year late. Everyone has a tablet, or numerous tablets. Everyone has high quality cell phones and the market has evolved quickly. I really dont get the appeal of this in the long run. This isnt a secondary product for nintendo, a lot is riding on this. I see more faults and issue then I do potential. Unless they have left out some serious bombs that we will find out later I think they are in trouble. The console looks cool, looks well made and I dig it, but when I objectively look at it I think nintendo has created issues for themselves, again not anticipating the market it will be in.

This is what Nintendo became since the Wii era though.
It's absolutely not what they were before.

NES/SNES/N64/Gamecube are all consoles that fit the traditional, powerful home console I loved about Nintendo hardware.

NES' competitors were the Master System and 16-bit gaming computers like the Amiga. It was underpowered.

Gameboy was underpowered against every single one of its competitors.

Even the N64 was hurt by carts and the Gamecube by mini-discs.

I think one of the thing I like most about this, from the standpoint of decisions Nintendo has made in comparison to their previous devices...

They finally found a way to be unique, but in such a way that third parties don't have to go too far out of their way to embrace that uniqueness.

They avoid the Wii situation where devs had to think, "how can we do this on super underpowered hardware with fewer buttons and this motion stuff?"

They avoid the DS and 3DS situation where devs had to think, "why should we release a little handheld release that would basically be its own unique version, with limited audience, and somehow take advantage of dual/touch screen?"

They avoid the Wii U situation where devs had to think, "how can we take advantage of this big touch screen in the middle of the controller, other than just lazily slapping on a big logo or something?"

Instead, anything released on Switch is already taking advantage of all of its features. EA is releasing portable sports games again, just by virtue of making home console sports games. Bethesda is making a portable game. No wracking your brain about this albatross touchscreen or how to incorporate swinging a remote, it just works.

Pretty cool way to consolidate what third parties want with what Nintendo wants.

I have a new concern. So....the system will have a regular charger to plug in in addition to being able to charge via the dock, right? Cause if the dock is the only way to charge it then that's really shitty. I need to be able to play this in portable mode while it's charging.

I could see 12 year old me thinking the hardware was the coolest thing ever. Now I just look at it and shrug. I havn't enjoyed or been engrossed in a Nintendo game since the Gamecube and GBA, when I was 11yo. Could be a part of growing up, I guess.

I find it questionable why they obscure the screen when you plug it into the dock.

Don't want to use it for notifications or as a second screen or anything??

The dock only charges and outputs. No extra HW.
