Honestly, what makes me most happy by far about this is that when it is released we'll finally be at the stage where no games are developed for any hardware platforms anymore that greatly detract from me being able to enjoy them with their technical inadequacy.

Your bar is above 3DS and not necessarily far above Wii U I presume?

Yeah, the 3DS was the last system where almost every game had a distinct look or "charm" specific to the hardware.

The greatest thing about this is we get all of Nintendo developers working on one machine. Imagine the library that this will build up...

This is the biggest selling point for me. I love Nintendo, and now that experience is consolidated. I think it'll unite the userbase and create that fun feeling of being in on something popular like playing Splatoon online during that hype phase or keeping up with Game of Thrones or listening to Blackstar just after David Bowie died. That was a sad example but you get what I mean. It's nice to be part of something special.

Yeah, I was the same. Totally fictional, unrealistic situations but I guess you gotta sell the fantasy somehow. In reality we're all mostly gonna be playing this by ourselves...

The examples in the video were stupid but I'll totally be taking this around to a friends house on a chill sunday playing some Nintendoland-esque title with the built in local multiplayer controller options.

The form factor and portability are definitely winning material.

Now the age old question remains: whether the console is powerful enough and has an OS that 3rd parties will be interested at. The same exact challenge that Wii and Wii U faced.

Well, if it takes off I think we can judge the merits of success differently here. Nintendo clearly are striking out into a new market - and if they can carve out a sustainable userbase I think that's a win. The Wii U had the other systems to contend with and hadn't established a clear identity, and I think that's an issue because as a result the other leading consoles were the benchmark by which it was compared. Nintendo are transforming their idiosyncratic style into a positive here, and speaking for myself - as someone who wasn't blown away by the reveal - I'm looking forward to it.

Please have a cool boot up sequence.

Gamecube style alternate openings? Hell yea. It'd be cool if the last one you chose became default from then on.

What. If the operating system doesn't have all the modern features and online components, it's completely and utterly dead in the water. Nintendo would be mad to make the same mistake third time in a row.

I remember Android rumors a few years ago, what happened to those?

Yes. You can create a game with nice enough graphics on Wii U if you stick to a simple style. A 3D game rendered at 400*240 will never look good to me.
Huh. I guess we've officially said goodbye to the jagged standard definition look. End of an era.

I saw the thread title yesterday, and it didn't even occur to me that this was actually the NX with an official name like that. lol

I thought "switch? What switch? *moving along*" It just sounds like an incomplete sentence or phrase when being refered to.

Anyway, it looks cool! Conventional controller is the main. Thank fucking beelzebub!

Missed it as well

I read Switch being mentioned in a PSVR thread and had to google it, lo and behold it's Nintendo's new console.

First impression is another handheld with some slightly fiddly docking, move this pull this out kind thing and same again on the other side.

The Vita had much larger problems than the price of software lmao

The same way the Wii U, Xbox One, and PS4 are able to. It's as much a home console as it is a handheld one.

This is an assumption that has no basis in fact. Nintendo aren't an online multiplayer focus platform provider in the same way Microsoft and Sony are. I highly doubt we will see a PS+/XBL equivalent on the Switch, especially when half of it's form factor is on the go and can't reliably be connected to the internet.

I don't think stock price hours after the launch teaser can be indicative of what third party support is going to be like. There is still a long pre-release cycle and the proper reveal to go. Don't count your chickens or whatever

(sorry for the large quote, I write from my mobile phone)

PA Vita had (and still has) great games that people did not want to pay the price for. No one wanted to pay 50€ for killzone (the best mobile fps ever made) for example.

And thats why companies stoped producing AAA games for the system. People could not justify to themselves to pay the premium price for AAA experiences on the go.

Try showing the Nintendo Swift to any of your non gaming friends and their first reaction will be "what kind of tablet is this?, "how much does it cost?", "How much games cost?", "does it have netflix?", "can I play xyz free to play game on it?" etc

Especially if Nintendo decides to sell the tablet and the docking station separately to create a lower entry point for the syste you cannot have the argument that it is a hybrid console.

As for subscriptions model etc just look at their Q&A section in their yearly financial meeting, I think it its clear that they will have subscriptions in the new nintendo unified network:

https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/library/events/130430qa/index.html

Anyway is still too early, and I think that nintendo has a very difficult winter ahead, because no one will buy a Wii U and I dont remember from E3 any nintendo games releasing in the next two months that will make any impact.

Are the Plus and Minus clickable (button) on the joy-con?

Also notice there is no trigger on the controllers anymore.

Yeah I think they have triggers, watch the bit where he's on the plane.

Those plus minus buttons are to release the controllers from the screen I think.

Take a look at the montage pic on the post. You can see a shoulder button and trigger in one pic and another appears to show someone pressing the plus/minus button to slide the controller off.

i think people would just want to have video streaming services if anything. and it probably will considering their last two did.

It also needs to have a proper online store, friend system and the OS shouldn't load every view for 30 seconds... you know all the stuff that went terribly wrong with Wii U.

...hate me...
I can take the removal of touchscreen input for games with the return of analog triggers. I mean if you're going traditional, go full traditional. Please.

What about them scrolling bumpers though?

I think the issue with the Vita was that even if the games were good they all felt like "inferior" versions of their home console counterpart. The perception that you didn't get the "real" CoD or AssCreed or Uncharted but spin-offs that clearly didn't stand up next to their home console cointerparts was very real. Despite how good Killzone was it was always competing with Shadow fall which released only 2 months later. In the minds of consumers Vita was just offering an inferior home console experience.

With the Switch they immediately hammered in the idea that your getting full fledged console games at your fingertips. Your getting Zelda BotW and not some top down 2D game. Your getting Skyrim Remastered the same full game thats only available on home consoles/PC. Your getting an updated/sequel to Splatoon and not some weird spin off. They showed home console games meant for home consoles which in itself already gives its promise for "Home Console on the Go" more sticking point than the Vita.

Perception is a very powerful in the minds of consumers. Just look at the WiiU.

The PS4, Xbox, and well PC already has that home experience on lock. This might not be able to compete with it which is why it's going the handheld route also. It seems that nintendo knows that can't compete with home consoles exclusively anymore. Hell I'm buying it just for the handheld portion, who knows what's happening with the DS now.

Yeah Sony/Microsoft have the home console market down which is why Nintendo is going this route. There's definitely a market for those who want to take those experiences on the go. It also provides a selling point to third party developers to tap into a market they haven't really had a chance to enter in the handheld sector. Even with Vita around everyone knows that handheld territory belongs to Nintendo, many western third parties were never really able to enter the market due to Vita not selling well and the 3DS being too weak. If Nintendo can sell a good amount of Switches with their now unified output of games they'll have more reason for 3rd party developers to jump on board and try to break in some handheld market share. It's all risky and can completely bomb of course but at this point it's a much better option than trying to compete with PS4/XBone head on.

^ MK looks like a port with added features/characters, splatoon looks like more of a sequel with some asset reuse.

The joy cons have gyro right? How you gonna play just dance?

I certainly hope so, the 1-per-hand form factor really lends itself to motion controls. I for one am ready for motion to return.

There's been zero confirmation though, and Nintendo's said they won't talk about technical details like that or a touchscreen until 2017. Maybe we'll get a leak, they should be manufacturing them now.

Will new content be available for purchase to wiiu owners? I would hate to have to buy mario kart 8 again just for few new characters and courses.

Can we talk a bit about what will be included in the box on day 1? So they need to include base station, tablet and two JoyCon controllers but they don't need to include JoyCon base so they can sell that separately, they will sell Pro controller separately too. So there is no chance that this will cost under 250-300$. Add to that pro controller that some people will want to buy that is another 50$ up.

Joy-Con base is most likely included. Its the only other place to store your JoyCon aside from keeping it attached to the tablet. Pro Controller definitely wont be included though. If its anything like Wii and WiiU there'll be some tech-demo pack in game with it, although im not sure what they canr eally include to "show off" the Switch ala WiiSports and Nintendoland.

I've been letting this sink in for half a day now, and slept on it for a night..

At first I was like lolwat? Then I was like, why not? Then I was like yes but.. Now I can say I'm in. Xbone/PS4 offer me nothing my PC and Steam can't, but this actually is a great value proposal for me if only because it solves a lot of my gaming space/time related worries as a new parent.

Well done Nintendo, you sold me my first Nintendo console.

It'll do better than the Wii U. Trust me. Nintendo has a killer app that will make kids go nuts for this and will reel in the adults. They are being very patient for a reason and made it a hybrid console to take on both the japanese market as well as western market.

I just noticed both Joy-Con lack a power button, same for the Switch Pro Controller.

If I'm using the latter while playing on my TV does that mean I have to get up to turn the console off if it's on the dock?

Now, it doesn't really bother me to get my ass out of the couch but it seems like an odd omission

Has this been discussed?

I expect it to do much better as well, Consolidating their handheld and home console sectors already guarantees that. Even if they only bring over half their WiiU audience and half their 3DS audience thats already 3x WiiU's lifetime sales.

Its possible the power button is on the JoyCon base instead, maybe along the upper/lower outer rim. But if not yeah its a strange omisssion. Although looking at the Pro Controller it seems to be lacking it as well, strange as the WiiU Pro Controller had it.

Of course it could be an OS level thing too where you power it off from the main menu.

Plus and minus buttons are also on the Switch Pro Controller so likely they function as plus and minus buttons that have been on Nintendo home consoles for a decade since the Wii. Nintendo would have chosen different shapes otherwise. They also seem too shallow to be a mechanical release thingy. And Plus/Minus (start/select) buttons are a necessity.

But still they may also be exactly where you pinch the Joycons to remove them, but as far as the release mechanism goes I think it's this little small round button on the back, can be seen around the 1 minute mark:

I'm going to get one but let me play devils advocate here.

The PS4/Xbox/PC have the market share of the home experience market and mobile phones/tablets have the market share of mobile gaming. Nintendo are competing on two fronts. It could be argued that it's a jack of all trades master of none.

Woah, just woke up to this by an email from Nintendo. This is amazing. Give me portable everything from this gen and I'd be so fucking happy. No Bungie on their list though ):

Looks great though, love everything about it. Don't care if it is underpowered.

It's going be OS based then just like the PS4 because other than the one on the screen, the power button is nowhere to be seen here.

edit: that or maybe the final controller design is not done yet (remember how the Wii U gamepad had circle pads instead of sticks?) and they will add that button on the real thing.

I'd wager that's the button on the left joy-con, mirror to the home button on the right. Also there on the Pro Controller.

Maybe it's not a dedicated power button though, and doesn't have to be. Just look at the Playstation. Their home button is the power button when the console is off. When it's on it can do different things and you can still shit the console down from menus (and a long press may still do it too). No need for a dedicated power button. But 100% sure you will not have to walk to the console to turn it on.

Probably done the same way as the Xbox one/ps4. Through a menu accessed through the os somehow.

I agree in some parts, but I don't want to go off topic and talk about the Vita and why it failed.

I will wait for the full spects of the Switch before I use the "home console on the go", if its tegra 1 based forget it.

And I will wait for the final version of the games, because I bought a Wii U for Zelda and I still wait to play the game.

About perception, imagine a scenario where a mom asks about the new "nintendo tablet" (that is the term I hear all day) and finds out that she needs to pay 60-70€ so that her child can play mario. All these money just for one game (lets forget hardware price for a moment).

Compare this price point for software with the hundrends versions of android, windows or apple tablets out there, with thousands of free games/apps.

For a mass market success, I hope they can achieve it, but I just don't see it happening and the main reason that concerns me is the price of software.

I will probably get one after 12-15 months of its launch because I love Nintendo exclusives, and because I travel a lot maybe if they deliver I can find a new main mobile console (now I use a vita and an iPad for mobile gaming).

And look at their messaging/marketing strategy, I think is crazy.

They even done copyright claims on peoples youtube videos of reactions/presentations that used the footage from the trailer.

The Amiga Brotherhood
It's better than expected and having games like skyrim on a handheld would be amazing, but i think i'll wait for a smaller revision and a left joycon with a real dpad and analog on the bottom.

Gahiggidy

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
Maybe its already been pointed out, but the +/- buttons look to release the lock on the Joy-Cons. The actor playing Zelda at home is pressing them as he detaches them form the base "Joy-Con Grip" controller.
