First downsampled 1080p screens from PS4 Pro (Titanfall 2)

Bad_Boy

time to take my meds
I just threw all these images up on on my 4k set...just to get a better idea than my computer monitor. Soo good.

Damn. I cant wait.

Here's another comparison showing the notable difference in iq. Skyrim is super sharp on pro.

PS4 Pro native 4k downscaled to 1080p.

See? Now, I appreciate your efforts, but this is where I get a little cynical. This is you downsampling a 4k image to 1080p. This is not what came off a PS4 Pro running at 1080p.

Maybe it will look exactly like that. But maybe not quite, either... yes?

People are taking this as gospel. I'm not so sure it is?

If your PS4 is running the game in 4k and is then downsampling it to your TV at 1080 it'll look like that.

Unless he used a potato to downsize the image rather than an actual image editing programme.

Bethesda posted this in their blog, they said skyrim is native 4k on ps4 pro:

How will it look like on a 1080p display then if it gets downsampled?

Woah so we can still choose 4K mode without having a 4K TV?

Yes, it's called downsampling:

What is downsampling

Downsampling, also called OGSSAA : Ordered Grid SuperSampling AntiAliasing, is in this case the concept of rendering the game at a much higher, custom made, resolution than your monitor is capable of displaying and subsequently having the GPU rescale the image ( as in downsample ) to that of your monitor's native resolution to which the end result is a "cleaner", sharper and less aliased image.

Curious about the framerate, but if it holds a consistent 60 then these screenshots are significantly better than the improvements I'd imagined. It's amazing what even a little bit more power can do. The Scorpio is going to be insane.

It's double the gpu power... That's not "a little bit".

I don't know, because I haven't seen a PS4 Pro Downsample it yet.

Could it look like folks on the internet downsampling it in image editing software? Yeah. In fact I hope it does.

Could it not? I suppose.

All I'm saying is, until I see it on my Pro unit on Thursday, I'm not going to accept any substitutes or get my hopes up on something. What if in downsampling it, the PRO does something else to it we aren't aware of.

I don't know, I appreciate folks trying to give us an idea... but as these are not actually images from PS4 PROs in 1080p mode... I guess I just don't want to take it for granted and perhaps be disappointed.

I'm rooting for it, though!

Looks good. Not good enough that I am going to upgrade. Which is my issue with the Pro. It is something I would have definitely bought had I known to wait until next week. I don't think I would have really missed anything in doing so.

I sold my PS4 a few months ago for $270. Happy to spend $130 more to upgrade (and bet a new warranty)

I could be wrong but I thought the Titanfall 2 images and that Skyrim image ARE from the downsampled PS4 Pro.

I mean it's not a mystery how downsampling works. It's almost the exact same thing as someone taking a 4k screenshot, opening it in an image editor and resizing it to 1080p. It's the exact same thing happening. The only difference would be for games not at a native 4k render, those would produce a bit more aliasing but Skyrim on Pro is native.

Ok, so since you're insistent on playing devils advocate here, is there a technical reason that the 1080p screenshot would end up looking any different coming out of a ps4 pro? Provided the 4k screenshot is actually from a ps4 pro of course.

Because honestly, having downsampled on the PC for years, I think you're being cynical for the sake of it here.

This could be a stupid question... but what would give a better image quality with equal performance. A 1080p display that has down sampled textures. Or running the game on a 4K display with the checkerboard technique?

Basically I want to know if the 4K HDR TV is the optimal choice if price is no concern. Or if the 1080p with nicer textures will look better.

At least for the Skyrim images, the poster on the previous page said he downsampled a shot from the Bethesda blog. It's not a PS4 Pro capture.

A 4k screen would look superior than a downsampled 1080p image. Downsampling is awesome and cleans up the image a ton but textures still won't look as clear as they would on a 4k set.

Edit - This doesn't apply however to if a dev decided to add extra graphical features to a 1080p mode. I'm just strictly talking about IQ

I was really wanting this game but caved and watched RadBrad play through it. First ever walk through I watched continuously because it was so good. I still want this game and this makes it worse. Decisions, decisions.

Oh, you'll miss stuff. ;) Joking, but c'mon, why dismiss what's obviously an upgrade from vanilla?

So if I play TF2 on a 1080p set, will the supersampling happen automatically or do I have to put it in a 4K mode?

Aside from some small aliasing left over. It actually looks like they put effort into making sure the final resolve looked good.

I hope it looks as good in motion. A lot of times downsampled images that sharp end up adding aliasing in motion because of it. (Especially if a box or linear function is in the mix) (And based on those Skyrim shots, that looks like a lazy downsample. Aliasing all over the place. That or they aren't using any other AA on top of it. Which would be dumb. Even FXAA would be beneficial because the oversampling would mitigate any and all softness)

But seriously.
Finally, GOOD AA on consoles. You have no idea how long i've longed for such a day!
Well, that and actual texture filtering. I will be livid if somehow games still are using poor quality AF or different AF levels on different surfaces. (All that extra FLOPs and you still can't get 16xAF? GTFO)

FFXV pro update can't come quick enough.

Yes, it's called downsampling:

Does downsampling need to be coded in for 1080p screens? Or will every Pro game with a higher than 1080p resolution (checkerboarding and such) automatically output downsampled on 1080p TVs?

I guess I'm wondering if I'll get this for every game or will some not have much/any benefit for 1080p screens?

Respawn said the framerate is more stable on the Pro so framerate should be very solid as it runs great on the base PS4.

Sony was right, this is attracting me from being bored of the current PS4 normal graphics. It's energizing my graphical curiosity on console, it makes me want this thing, and I'm a PC gamer main. FFXV shall be glorious, VR should be fun, and I don't have to wait to see if SE ports stuff to PC that much. Oh how will FFXII HD Remake look on this glorious thing? So many games to look forward to, so much crisp image quality.

I'm also curious how Xbox upgrade will look and work. I hope it's the same price since it's coming out later. Sounds like it'll be a tad more expensive though.

This for a 399€ upgrade?

No thanks...

Well normally if you're considering it an upgrade you would sell the original PS4 first, so it'd probably be closer to a 199€ upgrade. Still though that's up to you if IQ isn't important to you.

Whoa, wait a second. I expected less jaggies, but it literally looks like it has more detail. Well it seems like I don't know how downsampling works and super underestimated it.

Initially, i was a little worried that just having the 1080p "upgrade" wouldn't really hold me over till next year when i get a 4k but, these, these pictures in the OP and ITT... I pray that Jesus doesn't return for at least a year. I need this system in my life.

I wouldn't even pay 100€ because there is little difference at all in those screens. Titanfall I looking great right now on a standard ps4, playing it since Wednesday.

Um... The scene doesn't look identical between the pro and OG. Are both screens taken from the same exact spot in Skyrim?

If yes, then wow! It's not just a IQ increase. More foliage and other details are added!
