How is this making fun? Where is even the attempt of the joke? Just because he's a comedian doesn't mean everything he ever says can be written off as "humor"
Im not even sure youre being serious.

We are talking about the same guy who has made rape jokes. And i admit it was hilarious when i watched him perform. And the crowd laughed along.

But i also understand hes a comedian who is performing. Key word, perform. Ive taught sexual assault/abuse classes to military members, I definitely understand the severity. And rape itself is no joke.

But You have to take it all in context. I can understand why someone would be offended by a rape joke, you dont have to like his material. But context is key. And im willing to bet people being enraged right now are most likely taking the texts of his performanare out of context and not seperating dave the man and dave the comedian.

LIES! Angela Lansbury is a saint and always will be.

Oh..you don't know..😢

you haven't disappointed me

Didn't he eat cats alive?

Hey..I don't tell you how to eat!

Which is why I prefer to know as little about celebrities as possible.

This is true, sadly..

Don't you know? Anything having to deal with with social issues can only be interpreted in binary: hateful or not hateful. Context doesn't mean anything, silly rabbit.
What exactly is proper context that would make his statement about LGBT folks ok? Where is the joke? I'm not seeing any.

But even with that, I can and have observed that Chappelle treats humor about trans people differently than humor of black people. You bring up people missing the context of his work and using it in ways that make him uncomfortable, but as I noted, as a trans person, I am uncomfortable with a joke referenced in this thread about him about people having sex with a trans person despite finding it gross to do so; at least, with the way the joke is presented, it suggests that the butt of the joke is the trans person, which to me, was Chappelle's issue with his show, that the butt of the joke became black people, rather than racism.

But it is not as if we have not seen Dave make these very same jokes, sometimes more offensive than what is being presented. That's ultimately the issue, and as I noted, Dave jokes about trans people in a very different way than he jokes about black people.

But yes, it is absolutely possible that the person who quoted Dave could have an agenda; however, it is just as likely that Chappelle is telling a joke about trans people that simply does not work.

I'm going to disagree with you here because again, I went to one of the shows and even though it was a month or so ago, I don't think his material for this show was just made up. In the show I saw he talked about the controversy with the bathrooms and thought ultimately thought it was dumb. I can't remember the joke specifically but I do remember the audience clapping because ultimately his conclusion should be that this shouldn't be an issue. So I don't think it's equally likely that he means what you think he does. I'm not saying Dave is perfect or defending discrimination of trans people, but people are so quick to judge how horrible he is as a person when they don't know the full story and are believing something written by an outlet that most of this site would dismiss if it was about politics or really anything else. From what I saw, I don't believe Dave has anything against trans people, he might use insensitive language that is probably born out of the time that he grew up, like I don't condone him using the term lady boy, but I don't think it's done out of malice than 1. Ignorance and 2. It's a funny sounding (but hurtful) word

Imo some african americans do not like it when their struggle is compared to the lbgt or equality for women.

Im not saying its right but this is how some feel. They feel that they are more oppressed then both so for them its not the same.

I do not think anyone's saying he is a horrible person in this thread - at most, they are airing their grievances about something offensive he said. For me personally, I could simply look at him saying "tranny" and kind of sigh. I do believe that he does not hate trans people, but that his language can and has been hateful.

I can see him saying all of those quotes in the OP. Probably still a hilarious stand up.

Dave's comedy has always had elements of homophobia, transphobia, and even sexism. He's unrelenting in that way, but his critical eye for events and situations still make him a peerless comedian. Punching down is always unfortunate, but not out of his character.

Yes there are black lbgt people and women , but to them race comes first . Lbgt and women have every right for equality but to compare it to race of people I think makes some not all African Americans feel a certain way.

I am not saying whether whoever feels a certain way is right or wrong , I'm only explaining how people like Chappelle come to think the way they do.

They would argue that more has been done for lbgt and women in the US compared to black people as a whole. While that is great for them it causes some to have bad feelings towards them when they compare their struggle to African Americans who feel left behind.

Hmmm. Yeah I can see that. That's fair.

This is actually the result of a conscious diversionary tactic that was devised by conservatives to target and shift the black vote to them in the late 80's early 90's.

Saw video of some of his transphobic jokes months ago on yt, so I have a hard time buying any of that. Not to mention I'm of the minority in question that he's belittling.

He's never been open on this front.

Yeah, Dave Chappelle has many varied, nuanced, brilliant bits on race and racial relationships.

But he's ignorant at best and hateful at worst when it comes to LGBT, and especially trans, issues.

This is not a new thing. This is something that he's had since he started doing stand-up.

You're entitled to believe that, and I think if I hadn't seen him live and talk about it I might be with you. I just don't think there's evidence there that he's transphobic or anything. I think he uses language from another time when referring to trans people (that doesn't make it ok), and is slow to adapt, but I do think he's adapting

Mhm, troo... as others have mentioned he's also horrible on matters of sexual assault. I used to like some aspects of Chappelle (mostly his interview with Lipton and a few racial sketches) but over the past year, he's soured on me even more.

Look I'm gonna just say it.

If you took this attitude towards an old white man and changed "trans" to "black" and showed that to Dave he'd go off on how it's bullshit that he's "slow to adapt".

When he literally uses us as the butt of a trite, constantly used "joke", I couldn't disagree anymore with you if I tried.

That's the thing too, it's not even an inventive joke, it's basically the same joke that people were making 30 years ago about the issue.

It's something I'd expect off Killing them softly.

I can see the trump stuff as a joke. This though:

The comedian wasn’t feeling so much love for women’s rights, gay rights, and transgender rights activists, saying, “They should not be having that conversation in front of black people. You go ahead and feel something about your rights. But if you’re putting sexism and homophobia and transphobia in front of racism, you should be ashamed of yourself.”
Is fucking bullshit. Fuck Dave.

But Dave is the one running the oppression Olympics here. He is making the comparison. And why is a comparison a bad thing anyway?

I don't think it's bullshit that people are slow to change. In fact I think that's simply the reality. Again, I'm not condoning what he's saying, nor how he says it, but he's not just randomly throwing in a trans joke from nowhere and moving away from it. People are nuanced.

When he literally uses us as the butt of a trite, constantly used "joke", I couldn't disagree anymore with you if I tried.

FWIW, when he brought up Caitlyn Jenner in the set I saw, he just remarked about being curious to see what she'd look like in sports illustrateabout think he said something else aboit not really sure she was in he news but I could be misremembering). He sprung off that into the bathroom thing, made a joke about it and said it was dumb. He didn't shit on Jenner, he identified her as she wanted to be identified and made a couple of jokes. He was joking just as much about white people, harambe, hillary, trump, Mariah Carey's sister, etc.

"slow to adapt" is a euphemism for "actually he doesn't give a shit"

Nope. Youre being too reductive. I do think he is changing. If not, I don't mind admitting I'm wrong, but he even talked about how his friend whose a radical feminist has changed his views on some things.

For some weird reason people on this board think that you must change over night or something or you can't change at all. That's a weird thing to think about people.

but what if he followed it with "to get to the other side"?

lol, I was just having a conversation the other day about how if his show was on now, people would hate him and people would be in constant uproar about it.

yeah, i'm going to take the word of someone who gets upset at 'edgy' comedy transcribing from memory and without the pacing and rythm of a comedian to correctly convey these jokes.

Even if they were misfires or not funny, there's definitely nuggets of truth in all of these jokes. The inability to criticize your own 'side' this election has made me sick. Yeah, Trump can't be president, I think many of us understand that, but to not be able to say, hey we're focusing on the wrong shit, or, our pick for president is somewhat underwhelming, or I just outright hate some of the things she's done, is just BS.

I will say his views of the consent thing is just wrong.

EDIT: oh and i missed the whole rights part, again, as transcribed, that sounds pretty fucking shitty. Again though, comedian vs. transcribed by non-comedian looking to get other people on their own 'outrage' train.

But Dave is the one running the oppression Olympics here. He is making the comparison. And why is a comparison a bad thing anyway?

Many people have compared the rights of black people to the lbgt and women , I could get a source but I think its a given. I'm typing so I'm not trying to sound like a smart alec or whatever it is called but I explained in my other posts why it is not a good comparison

Haha the white delegation doesn't want him either. What a fucking tool, denouncing the rights of others is what led to things like Hitler.

And once again the entire concept of the "oppression olympics" was designed by those doing the oppressing to divide sub-groups and minorities from one another.

Yo alright look people saying shit like this is exactly why people just brush this kind of stuff off.

There's limits and appropriate reactions to shit.

Aren't different minorities and sub groups all ready divided naturally ? So it would only make sense that they would care for their own first and foremost before others. That is not to say that they should be against each other but its also not like they are allies either.

There are black gay women some who put their race before their gender or sexual preference.

This has to be a joke, he's a comedian right? Maybe he's just bringing humor to a new level...

They are allies though, that's the point, they should naturally be allies against their mutual oppressor. That division was created artificially.

For instance the nature/nurture debate was specifically crafted and created in order to alienate other opporessed groups from LGBT people. "See they choose to be gay I didn't chose to be black."
