Digital Foundry: PlayStation 4 Pro Review: The First 4K Games Console?

I updated my post, straight from DF:

""Draw distances are also fleshed out with more in the way of foliage and geometric objects visible at range, whereas on PS4 and Xbox One the game's LOD system is slightly more aggressive in culling these details. This leads to slightly more in the way of pop-in, though this aspect of the game is improved over the original PC version. Furthermore, volumetric lighting is also given a slightly stronger implementation, which creates a little more bloom within light shafts over the PS4 and Xbox One versions.""

So no, the view distance isn't even up to par with the PC version, even before ugrids, which put it on another level.

EDIT: my bad, they are comparing the remasters, not the Vanilla PC version. You're right, without ugrids and foiliage ini tweaks the remaster is better on all platforms. When comapring remasters though, PC without tweaks is better.

I downloaded the ROTTR video from digitalfoundry, I really can't see a difference in resolution between Ps4 Pros 4k Checkerboard and the PCs native 4k.

My head is spinning with the info in this video... :/

4K / HDR is complicated as fuck

Edit: OUCH at no improvements for standard PS4 games with unlocked framerates... :/

You're right, I should have said draw distance. To me, they are almost interchangeable phrases, but they mean totally different things! I'll update my post.

Exactly.

There is a difference but it's shockingly minimal in cases like ROTTR. It looks convincingly native.

Skyrim PS4 + Pro + 1080p

Do I get anything?
Ps4 vs pro

You get a sharp ass picture that's what.

The difference is a sort of slightly blurred image on the PS4 Pro, right? That's at least what I can tell. Probably isn't even noticeable at a proper viewing distance I'm guessing :)

No you were right. Check my edit :)

Ah, ok! I understand if there was confusion! Lots of terms being thrown around and multiple versions (and videos) of the game.

Because there is not a difference in resolution they are both 2160P the difference is how they got to that resolution.

Since some games like Uncharted 4 run at 1440p (before upscaling to 4K or downsampling to 1080p)... What happens if I connect the PS4 Pro to a 1440p monitor? Can I set the Pro to display that resolution natively? Would the games even run at that resolution or just do the 1440p downsampled to 1080p thing?

I'm hoping DF has some more articles and footage through out the day and in the days leading up to Thursday. Still a surprising number of unknown quantities.

EDIT: It would be cool if we could get a running tally of all the games that will receive super sampling for 1080p screens.I feel like there still isn't enough straight anwsers on the 1080 front.

Does Uncharted 4 have any PS4 Pro enhancements for 1080p TV sets (e.g. supersampling)?

SP campaign on a Pro runs at 1440p, no framerate changes. 1080p TVs will get supersampled image [although IMO game looked really great even before Pro :D]
MP on a Pro now runs at full 1080p60.

Cerny confirmed that ND is still working at their Pro tech, they will maybe later release some performance/rendering changes. I think this has to do with the work on the promise d U4 singleplayer DLC.

Any game that has a Pro patch and renders above 1080p will be supersampled. And since the point of the Pro is 4K, your damn well guaranteed that 95% of those games will be rendering above 1080p.

Thank for the review, I can't but help to ask: SSD/HDD comparison incoming?
It'll happen I'm sure. I think it's difficult right now since the Pro is needed for capture and we currently only have that one unit. Changing HDDs around and downloading the games again would limit access to it in a big way! Once we have spares I'm sure testing will happen!

Hey, so, you're not getting one? Did you change your mind or are you just really interested in new hardware?

I was never planning on getting one heh. I just like conversing about the newest technology and detailing the ins and outs. But of course, there's no reason for me to not go Pro if my launch PS4 dies though.

But i don't see that happening before the PS5 comes out, which i think will make Pro and PS4 irrelevant purchases after it launches.

Ok. Just checking. There's a bunch of people desperately waiting for something to justify their SSD purchases in the other thread :p

One thing I noticed is the birds in the beginning, around the 10 seconds mark.
On Ps4 Pro they have kind of a dithered look in some frames.
Is that a result of the checkerboard rendering?

HStallion

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Its probably be asked and answered already but has anyone tried putting an SSD into the Pro and seeing if it was a big upgrade for load times or not?

Why on earth would they buy the SSD's before knowing the if there's a real advantage or not?

Got money to burn?

I don't think there is any doubt that SSD will improve the experience, the question is how much and is the cost justified.

Just like on orig ps4 ( where it was not worth it imho )

Yep. That's exactly right.

You can see artefacts like that if you look closely. From what I've seen, these types of issues aren't a big deal when playing at a normal viewing distance.

Can we expect more from DF this week in regards to PSVR? I know the small blurb/box said you had limited time, hopefully we see more leading up to Thursday?

Glad DF has a Patreon now, I always told myself if I could pay you all I would. Now I can!

Awesome to read these impressions. Have my Pro on pre-order so I'm super excited. Only have a 1080p set but looking to invest into a 4K set sometime next year.

Hugely appreciated!

We'll definitely tackle PSVR going forward and, if all goes well, I should be able to get a Pro tomorrow as well which will massively improve efficiency since I can start producing videos too.

First game I'm going to tackle is Tomb Raider just because I've covered it on all platforms already and really want to look at the three modes. Then perhaps stuff like REZ, Knack and whatever else sounds cool.

The others will be cranking away on more videos as well!

Any Battlefield 1 impressions yet? I'd like to know what res its running at.
Yeah, as others noted, there isn't a patch for it yet. :(

I need to see some Battlefield 1 Side-by-Sides like NOW.

More importantly (to me) I want to see some frame rate comparisons. Unless I get some info soon I guess my PS4 Pro is staying in the box on Thursday. I'm really only buying it for a better BF1 experience and if for some reason the difference is minimal I'll probably return the Pro.

To each their own, but you're really only buying the Pro for (hopefully) a better gaming experience on one game?

It'd be neat if some PC games used the same techniques to let lower powered GPUs hit 4K. I suppose the reality of PC gaming will make that impractical

Even though I don't have a 4K TV and I likely won't have one for a long time I am still going to be getting this not only for the future proofing but I haven't got myself a PS4 yet so I see no reason not to spend the extra money for better graphics and framerate. This was a thorough review. Great job, Digital Foundry.

I'll enjoy the better visuals and performance in Titanfall 2 but that game seems to perform (frame rate) just fine on the base PS4 so that's more icing on the cake. I consider the Pro somewhat of a stopgap since I expect I'll end up getting the Scorpio eventually and shifting to that for most/all of my multiplat games, and in the next 12 months I expect most of my time to be on BF1 and TF2, so yes I'm mostly upgrading for BF1, and mostly hoping that the poor frame rate performance will be greatly improved. If that's not the case then skipping the Pro and waiting for Scorpio starts looking like a better option.
