Nintendo Switch Presentation - January 12th

I am actually hoping they give discounts for the enhanced version of games that Wii U owners have.

That would only be possible for downloaded versions of the Wii U games, and you'd also then have to download the Switch enhanced versions for a discount. As you'd need Nintendo ID to recognise your purchases.

I don't see why they would do this in any way. We purchased the games on Wii U, we enjoyed them. I don't expect a discount if they added additional content to the game. If it is a straight port with upgraded graphics then it should be a reduced price. $39.99. But if they add more cups, characters, and other content to MK8, for example weshouldn't get a discount.

You don't get a discount from buying a new iPhone every year, you also don't get a discount everytime we buy a new version of Madden and Fifa. Nintendo should not do this, unless there is absolutely no difference except refined graphics optimized for Switch, or God forbid, it is lacking features from the previous version.

There still were club Nintendo codes inside the wiiu games initially and going with the NES mini there will probably be for switch games too, so you could get eshop coins / wallet even for physical copies

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.
Launch bundle to include band-aids
Nintendo Land 2 featuring Zelda Quest 2 and Metroid Blast 2: to the rescue.

I'd buy that + a good racer (read: Excite Truck 2 or a decent sim), and I'd be as happy as a pig in slop.

Won't work. Can't go "well, this game released after we stopped doing codes so you're SOL! But this other one you get cheaper!"

You also dont get a console losing all third party support after the first year.. Not to mention First party support slowed to a crawl with Zelda the reason people bought the system coming out when the system is dead roughly 3 years later.... The discount would be for people who remained loyal to the system in spite of its support level and to get people to migrate to a system that has people skeptical of its success.

Dont even get me started on virtual console .. people have had to buy the same NES games on every platform and system because they dont store data in the cloud.

People remaining loyal to the platform got awesome games on a regular pace. Fewer of them only this year.

You did not have to rebuy VC games from last gen to this gen. Only time you had to rebuy was between handheld and console.

While I originally speculated that Zelda would be at launch and Mario in the holidays it would've clashed with Skyrim and Sonic 2017 project. If the releases are inverted then that wouldn't be the case. Would be far away from Horizon too (though potentially close to some other big holiday game)

If Zelda isn't at launch, I don't think they'll hold it until the holidays. Probably a launch window game or sometime in the summer....or maaaybe early fall .

I'm trying to imagine a scenario where a retailer is still stocking Wii U games a year from now and BotW will be coming to that system as well.

If it's not at launch I hope it's shortly after. Not sure I can wait another year for it.

If it somehow doesn't make it at launch, I can guarantee you it'll be the Friday before Black Friday.

I know Nintendo's patterns. So pick a God and pray for it being a launch title. >:)

Hopefully. A May/June release would be pretty sweet. Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon, 2 of Nintendo's biggest hits on Wii U, were early summer releases. Less competition and more time for them to finish/polish it.
The game looked pretty finished by last e3 with newer builds running pretty well. I wonder if they're still working on improvements for the Switch build.

Since Intelligent Systems was already discussed, I just want to mention separately, if it's any reassurance, that if you take a look at the DS or 3DS HD upscale threads, a lot of the 3DS games already have high poly models and look reat in HD as is. So some of the developers probably are a hop, skip and a jump way from their games being ready for Switch.

Thanks for your concern, and yes that is somewhat relieving.

I'm not going to stop being a fretful, pessimistic Nintendo fan who really wants the Switch to work out thinking that it has potential to be great for a) my gaming life, b) Nintendo's future in console hardware/software, and c) Japanese console gaming in general (both consumer and developer sides) but will, I think, probably fall a good ways short of its potential. So don't worry too much about it; expect my posts to look at the glass as half empty and to not give Nintendo or Japanese third parties the benefit of the doubt as it pertains to making Switch all it could be. A good January 12th (or other distinct, positive software signs) and a solid launch year are really the only things that will get me to calm down at this point :p.

That said, Nintendo didn't help matters with that teaser. So off point from my warped perspective.

Nintendo can be pretty unpredictable. I bet no one ever thought Super Mario Galaxy 2 would release in May.

Waiting for Zelda until next November is as ridiculous as waiting for NX for 2 years. Oh, wait.

Now, really, can't wait for another E3 with Zelda, it will be glorious. Hopefully they keep also some other Wii U games to show again.

I wonder if Nintendo will give any benefits to Wii U owners when purchasing the Switch?

It would be in nice faith, but I'm not expecting it.

True, but still if its not at launch I'd still say theres a 90% chance of November. Especially since if its not at launch it has to be that it isn't done yet and not that they are intentionally holding it back. Hope to be wrong tho. Well I hope its at launch.

So Zelda isn't at launch but potentially Mario is?

That about it?

Only if you are a resident of panicville or jump-to-conclusionburg...

Emily Rogers said that Mario Switch is much farther along than we all think and could even be a launch game, and said she wouldn't be surprised if it is the launch game instead of Zelda, though she's heard nothing indicating that.

This is from what I remember of the past few pages, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Zelda has to be a launch game or within the release window.

They'd be insane to hold it until November.

I'm thinking 3D Mario at launch then, and Zelda BotW in May?

November has to be Smash Bros unless they have something bigger. If Smash Bros has new characters then they can sell more Amiibo.
(This is under the assumption most major selling Wii U ports come out in the first year because I don't see why they should release them in 2018.)

Edit:
They're waiting to see if Switch bombs, if it does, they delay Zelda for another 3 years to release on the next Nintendo successor console. lol

I think it'll be the other way round.

I know Mario is supposed to be further along than we think, but Zelda has to be launch or very close to it. Releasing a Wii U version of the game in November would be just weird.

Serious question:

would it really matter to anyone here (take off your amateur business hats) if Zelda launched in March or May?

Not at all.
Mario is a bigger deal for me so if we get 3D Mario instead of Zelda at launch I wouldn't even bat an eye.

They could absolutely be holding it back. Nintendo does this all the time. Maybe Nintendo doesn't think both Mario and Zelda on day one makes sense? Regardless of whether or not I agree with that, it's an understandable position to take. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the Wii U version of BotW is ready to go right now, but is being held for a simultaneous release.

I really don't see BotW being released next fall. That would essentially make one of Switch's big hitters for the first holiday season (and eight months after launch) a Wii U game, even if that game is Zelda.

If Zelda isn't a launch title, I think it'll be released pretty early on in the console's life to keep the momentum going.

I think it'll be the other way round.

Exactly! You have to wonder if stores will have any Wii U software on their shelves by that point.

Honestly I had enough with the Miis already. I would prefer if the Miis or Miitomo have nothing to do with Switch, but I know that's very unlikely. And it's not a deal breaker.

Miis are just childish. Imagine if they'd showed Miis during that Switch reveal trailer. They would have looked so out of place and would have been a laughing stock. They need to evolve them if they are going to keep the concept around. Shit, given the audience of that trailer, XBox avatars would be more appropriate.

I'm more of a Zelda guy than a Mario guy, but Mario at launch is a decent trade-off so long as Zelda is, say, summer. It would be really weird if Zelda was Nintendo's big e3 game again though. Especially as all things going well the coverage should be dramatically less than it was last year :p.

Also, you'd think they'd want to cash in on last e3's Zelda hype early on in the system's life if possible.

BotW, digital only.

Your beef is with Nintendo and Wii U system. Not with the first party games. I bought Wii U day one, I bought two as gifts for people. It is a colossal failure. Worse than Dreamcast IMO. Doesn't mean it didn't have some good games though.

If they want to cut me a deal for purchase of Switch, I'll listen. As far as I'm concerned, I think Nintendo will work out a deal with Gamestop, Bestbuy and other stores around the world and cut you a break if you trade in Wii U and games toward a Switch. That is the most fair way to do it.

If BoTW doesn't show up until later, then Zelda Wii U is going to be digital only. Then the Wii U eshop will be shut down in 2018, effectively removing Zelda Wii U from gaming history.

Zelda BotW Wii U version to be a GameStop exclusive, pre-order only.

Edit: I could see it happening. Most retailers would likely put their Wii U hardware on clearance.

For Miis to be childish it would need them to be appealing for children. I would say that the Miis are rather banking on nostalgia now than on them being cute or funny in the eyes of children.

But Nintendo is continuously trying to make Miis hip again with the likes of Tomodachi, Miitomo and Miitopia. And they even succeed somehow, but still within Nintendo's usual audience.

I'm not sure if Miis help them reach also other audience. My personal perception is that it's rather the opposite effect, but that's just anecdotal.

Heck, I could see this happening if BotW is somehow released next fall (God help us). In Japan, the GCN version of Twilight Princess was only available online through Nintendo.

Unless there are some massive development issues with Zelda it will come out no later then May 2017, they would really kill the hype on the game if they made it sit through another E3 and have us wait another year for the game.

At that point people are gonna be hyped for other new Switch games and PS4 pro and Scorpio games

Zelda and Horizon is the two big exclusives that have the hype Nintendo does not need to lose that are we forgetting the only game we saw from Nintendo Direct at E3 was Zelda, would be terrible to be there again just to get over looked

seriously, Retro has to be working on game number 2 by now right?

I'd be more excited seeing a Platinum Games game on Switch than a game from Retro.

Retro only have Metroid Prime and Donkey Kong Country Returns as the IP that define who they are.

It's not as interesting as Rare that had Banjo Kazooie, Battletoads, Killer Instinct, Conker and Perfect Dark.

Yes, Rare worked on Nintendo IP but they had their own original IP which people still clamour for as seen when Microsoft acquired Rare.

A new original IP from Retro would be interesting to see if it can help define what they are aside from being a Nintendo Spin-off machine.

I don't see why this would matter. They're a great developer no matter what and show versatility even if it's an established IP. A great game is a great game. Also, they had to take Metroid and interpret it into 3D.

With Platinum you know you'll probably get another Action game. At least, with Retro you could get anything and be completely surprised. They're both great developers, but since they're Nintendos premier western studio I get way more excited for what they come up with.

I feel Retro Studios is overrated. What's their track record? 3 Metroid Prime games and 2 Donkey Kong Country Returns games plus environmental art support for Mario Kart 7.

Platinum Games track record is: Madworld, Bayonetta, Infinite Space(if that counts), Anarchy Reigns, Vanquish, Wonderful 101, Scalebound, Star Fox Zero, Metal Gear Rising Reveangence, Nier Automata and then the Activision licensed games.

Of course that sounds like an unfair comparison since Platinum Games has iirc 2.5x to 3x the number of staff compared to Retro Studios.

Yeah, it's hard to compare. Retro doesn't get to make too many games.

Platinum Games heavily outsources on every game, and they work for multiple publishers. It's comparing apples to oranges.

At least Retro are consistent in quality......

At least Retro are consistent in quality......
RETRO is very slow, though. If you have PG the same amount of time and money they'd be very consistent as well.
RETRO was founded on 1998 and has put out 5 games, 3 of which are sequels.
Platinum was founded on 2006 and has put out around 13 with only 1 direct sequel. Just because they had some licensed projects with short dev times does not make their portfolio suddenly unimpressive.
I think RETRO is the one that has more to prove after taking a whopping 3 years and 3 months to put out a 2D platformer sequel.

Retro has worked on console titles only (Bar support for mario kart). They usually take 3 years for every project. I think that their output is consistent in quality and in time too. They usually release a new game the same year that EAD tokyo releases one. It's not like the 2d platform sequel was some kind of throwaway game. It's very well made and has tons of details, each stage has unique assets and music. It's a super varied title. I don't understand this talk about retro when they only released quality since they were created.
