Nintendo files trademark for "Wave Race" in Europe

Wave Race is always a good title to showcase the power of the hardware. They did that with the N64 and GC and if they show off a Switch version it is because they know they have strong hardware again. (I know...thats complete bullshit ;P)

Miles Jeter was the best.

Look at that. The physics still look like so much to fun to play around with.

Gonna have to hook up my 64 again some time soon.

Never played Wave Race before, is there any reason for me to get excited? Pretty much the only racing games I like are the Mario Kart games.

Please God, let there be a new Wave Race coming out for Switch.

Wave Race 64 was spectacular and is still great today.

My first thought was whether this is just a trademark renewal or not, but GAF gonna GAF lol. I'm not really into racing games, but it'd be a nice addition to the Switch library.
Provided anything comes of this, of course.
It isn't.

This is the first time it's being trademarked.

It's one of a kind. No other game has captured racing on water so well. The thought of a modern version is extremely appealing because of that.

Modern audeinces accustomed to today's content bloat would probably laugh at its paltry amount of tracks, modes, etc., but what is there is extremely quality and timeless as far as I'm concerned.

There was a GameCube game no?

Blue Storm lacked the presentation, the music, the character of WR64, but it had the best water based handling EVER. You felt the water in a way I haven't come close to feeling in any other jet ski game. I got amazingly good at that game in a way I haven't with any other.

The music was very good. The controls were very good. Blue Storm and Avalanche were great games.

I wonder if Sumo will be developing. I can't see it being in house. The GameCube game was a bit meh but I've got fond memories of the N64 game.

As much as I'd love it, I don't see Wave Race as a retail product. I don't think there's a market for a full-prized wave racer. It could be a part of a collection or maybe as a downloadable title.

As a $50 game I could see it being retail. Especially so if it involves more than just Jet-Skis this time which knowing Nintendo is very likely.

Well heck, I only recently posted this:

...They need a "Nintendo Sports Presents:.." moniker to push, and take their long dormant franchises to the next level on Switch:

Nintendo Sports Presents: Excitebike
Nintendo Sports Presents: Wave Race
Nintendo Sports Presents: 1080 Snowboarding

Almost there Nintendo... almost there.

But...like I said before...aren't they just renewing their old trademark so they don't lose it? They aren't going to want anyone else making any Wave Race games.

I'm telling you: WaveRace Resort with several other game modes and heavy social integration.

But probably not.

All the above racing games can use the Mario Kart engine. Perhaps release 1 of those per year.

Then we also have
Mario Tennis
Mario Strikers
Mario Golf
Punchout

That's another 4 more sports games

Nintendo could have 1 sport game a year and be sorted for the whole generation for Switch.

It's all about having a steady flow of games. They don't even need to be full rocked. Release as $40 games with a modest budget. Games like Mario Tennis can reuse the engine and assets from the Wii U version. And all the racing games can use Mario Kart engine.

Good reminder from our own Nintendo Ninja - that the GM of Nintendo R&D proposed the idea of making a Nintendo Motorsports Collection. This idea fits into that, this is our Nintendo Land / Wii Sports for Switch.

Well just speculation and hope.

I'm just not sure if WaveRace, F-Zero, Excitewhatever, etc. would really all mesh into a cohesive experience. Sounds way too ambitious and sloppy, unless it's extremely streamlined into more of a casual MiiPlaza type experience.

You know I wouldn't be at all surprised.

Didn't they tweet a while back that they're surprised at what they were working on? I'm probably wrong though.
