So, to summarize:

It's a new trademark, so it has to be for something new.
Wave Race 64 is already out on VC, so it probably isn't that.
They stopped doing new VC Gameboy games, so it probably isn't the original Wave Race.

So, it's most likely a new game of some sort, right?

You probably don't have to worry, NST at this point is mostly a Mario vs. Donkey Kong factory now, though they're apparently doing the Mario Maker port for 3DS.

My money is on Namco Bandai making this....No real reason why though. Just think Nintendo are throwing third parties a bone and NB are on good terms with Nintendo atm.

How does a game with niche sales make sense for a mega company? This is a job for smaller scale dev studios.

There is a team for a game that sank the franchise? What is next? People that prefer F-zero GX soundtrack than X?

I really don't get what you mean. Blue Storm was a great game.

If a VC title counts this could be for a hypothetical Gamecube Virtual Console on the Switch. Wave Race Blue Storm was a GC launch title so it'd fit if it is among the first GC VC titles.

Then again it'd probably include the subtitle if this was the case...

If for "great" you mean "very inferior of the original", then yes, I agree.

Hope so. If not EAD, I hope for Monster studio.

Monster Games did a good job with the Excite racing series, but they weren't a shining beacon of tight controls and level design. They were good games, but not as good as Blue Storm. Metacritic at least backs my sentiment.

Blue Storm - 80
Excite Truck - 72
Excitebots - 77

Wrong racing game, Nintendo

That's not Diddy Kong Racing 2

You know, this had me thinking: Has Nintendo ever made a new installment in a series where the original game is completely unavailable to resell?

It goes without saying that the original Diddy Kong Racing is pretty much lost to the ages thanks to the whole Rare/Microsoft ordeal. There was that remake/port on DS but it's generally considered inferior and not a good substitute for the original, and I'm pretty sure Nintendo won't re-release it on their eshops either, especially since we're moving on to the Switch and there most likely won't be DS VC games.

I know I'm being weird, but I just think it's kinda odd to be like:

"Here's Diddy Kong Racing 2!"
"Um, what happened to Diddy Kong Racing 1?"
"Uh...."

I wonder if they'd be allowed to take the N64 ROM and edit out the models of the characters they no longer own the rights to, then just sell it that way

how hard could it be

Nintendo never does anything drastic like that ever lol. You can still play Jetpac in DK64 on Wii U.

I didn't know the original Mario Parties weren't on VC. Something to do with Hudson (who technically don't exist anymore oops)?

The N64 version of wave race was better with music, arcade feel (if you prefer that) and good old 90'style and ahead of ots time. Overall it might be the better game.

However, it is absolutely laughable how Blue Storm gets criticised because it certainly improves in certain areas. First of all the physics; while the N64 is impressive for its day, blue storm feels amazingly realistic and improves greatly adding more realistic waves and overall movement of water and surroundings. Combine that with absolutely pitch-perfect controls and Blue Storm is something more than the summ of its parts. Because of this; the game really shines at the harder difficulties where you must get familiar with the tracks and boost at smart places. Because of the perfect controls and physics it is never unfair and the harder difficulties elevate the game greatly. Then there are weather conditiona which add to the variety. Also, the voice acting is good and every racer has his own coache. Of course the graphics get an update and music is certainly good in its own right, comparable to F-ZeroX>GX.

The only weak point of the game is the number of tracks; certainly could
have used 3 or more unique tracks.

That being said, a new wave race is one of the few games (if handled correctly) which gets my hype up to 100%. The others being a eternal darkness successor and a new advane wars.

Have to agree on that, Blue Storm is really underrated by Nintendo fans.

If they really wanted to, they'd just reboot it. it's been long enough. If legal complications made giving it the plain title of "diddy kong racing" impossible, they'd just subtitle the thing.

This discussion just made me realize what a bloodbath the GC era was for beloved Nintendo franchises:

Sunshine killed of the Mario 64 format.
NST killed Wave Race
EAD killed Ocarina (for a moment)
Namco killed Star fox
And Retro killed Metroid

As for Blue Storm, I never got a strong sensation of being on the water in that game (though I haven't played it in fifteen years...). But more than that, I thought the track design just wasn't as well executed. Wave Race 64 is engaging the entire time, because of the buoy placement, the wave action, the obstacles, and all that before you even get to the bend of the track. My sense is that stuff just wasn't as well thought out in Blue Storm and it kind of killed the game.

In retrospect, all the focus on weather conditions I think betrays a lack of understanding what was actually important. Those kind of gimmicks remind me of Fzero X where Nintendo also lost sight of the fundamentals and replaced them with nonsense like half pipes and other extreme track designs.

Long way of saying that EAD better be developing this if it exists.

So does anyone think getting the sports licenses is worth it for Nintendo? Especially up against something like 2K?

I've personally thought for years that NST doesn't deserve to exist because they ruined with their sequels/remakes 3 of the absolute masterpieces in history of gaming: Bionic Commando, Wave Race and Donkey Kong '94. Bionic Commando has been redeemed luckily with the Grin remake, but for the other two they stil haven't got justice.

And Retro killed Metroid

Making the most critically acclaimed (outside of Super Metroid) and commercially successful game in the series =/= "killing Metroid". Even if you don't like it, it's just objectively a quality game.

If anyone killed Metroid, it was Yoshio Sakamoto.

I agree that Blue Storm was a disappointing follow-up to Wave Race 64, but it was by no means a bad game. I appreciate its attempt to make the gameplay more challenging. It even had some nice ideas that tried to evolve the series. The weather system in particular was a fantastic innovation that added a lot of depth and replayability to the game. If they ever decide to make a new Wave Race, they really need to keep this.

The problem with Blue Storm is that it ruined the best aspects of Wave Race 64, the amazing feel of cutting through the water and the incredibly fluid controls. Even the use of physics never felt quite as satisfying as in 64. Not because the physics were bad, but because the gameplay didn't emphasize them in the same way.

Then there was the disappointing presentation. This is, of course, completely subjective, but Wave Race 64 had an elegance not present in Blue Storm. The beautiful "blue sky" aesthetics, along with the catchy, melodic, tunes, made the game feel like OutRun: Jet Ski Edition. It was impossible not to fall in love with it. Blue Storm felt too uninspired and generic compared to Wave Race 64.
