NPD - PS4 was the top selling console of November 2016

I think even then that wouldn't be a great move. Announcing a new console gen would upset a bunch of people. Especially with the Slim launching this year.

If it was full backwards compatible it might not be so bad. The Scorpios specs seem like such a missed opportunity to have to be tied down to XB1's 1.31TFs.

But Sony only had the Unwanted 4 bundle against such fantastic Xbox deals!
PS4 Pro was a flop and UHD BR drives were supposed to be the must have items of the holiday season 2016.

Emmmm....LOL.

Now seriously...it was obvious that Sony's strategy this year was to take the holiday season while the wait for the Pro and the temporary lack of deals on the Slim damaged sales in the pre-season months. But those lost sales were pretty much irrelevant and bounded to be recouped over the holiday period.
With Sony having great deals over Cyber Monday, a new price cut to 249$ lasting for two weeks period and a few exclusive bundles like the special FFXV Luna edition, December will also be a huge month for PS4.

I might do that some day, unless there are singing scenes. I can live without the brownie points, if that's the case. ;)

It's a Disney movie, so there's singing lol

I was at a BB last weekend and they had two huge pallets of Xbox One S and one huge pallet of PS4 Slim. There were 3 Pros available.

I don't think this industry is ready for a new gen right now. These mid gen upgrades seem to be the way to for publishers. I think EA said it's no extra R&D to port games to Scorpio or Pro. Their engine is scaleable. A new gen would require imo more powerful hardware and for companies to spend millions in R&D making new engines to accommodate that.

The lack of world wide appeal is due to the original, awful, xbox one idea. I wish the scorpio was an actual next generation. So we could get a clean cut.

Even the 360 failed to outsell the PS3 in Europe, so I don't know what the Scorpio could do to change that.

UHD movies are not that big of a deal,
and besides the good movies aren't getting the UHD treatment any time soon.

A company winning the month where they released a new console is not really something of note tho.

Uh...the Xbox 1S release, not to mention the looming release of Pro and Slim, helped MS sell the most the past 3 months.

I can't believe people thought that a UHD Blu-Ray player held any kind of market sway.

The online shouting match that it's absence caused tried it's damnedest to make it sound important.

The Xbox One definitely did additional damage to the Xbox brand in markets outside the US. Its marketing core was on the TV overlay, sports compliment programs (particularly American football), and other US-centric features. Didn't play well to an international consumer.

Probably nothing. There's more to it than specs. While I think it's great that they're building off of the groundwork of the Xbox One, so system/online features are intact day one, it doesn't change their games library, which is lacking compared to the competition.

Did people around here really think the lack of a UHD blu-ray player would hurt Sony that much?

360 still lost but it did a lot better market share wise.
The problem is that markets like germany have grown a lot this gen and the growth was almost exclusively PS4.

I always said that shit didn't matter in picking a console. Most people don't even have the tech to take advantage of that.

I doubt its most vocal supporters even cared about it. It was just one thing the XB1 had over the PS4 so that latched on.

Read the thread were no UHD for the Pro was announced.

It was ironic ;)
It was obvious to all but a few Microsoft fans that UHD were pretty much a non factor, the current lineup is really poor and everyone but videophiles has moved on to Netflix and streaming services.

Oh yes those cheap 4K TVs selling like hot cakes during Black Friday bundled with a XB1S were supposed to rule November.
I'm not going to call out anyone because honestly it's not worth it but the amount of bullshit thrown around in September when the Pro was announced was outstanding...

A little off topic, but it's something I've noticed in quite a few retailers here in Florida. A lot of the big retailers(Target, Best Buy, Walmart, etc) have bigger sections reserved for Xbox games/accessories compared the the PlayStation sections. Also, it seems like the TVs used to demo the games are better calibrated when hooked up to an xb1 than a ps4. That last point might just be me, though.

Never even bothered responding to those who acted like the One S was a better buy than the Pro based on UHD. What gamer buys worse gaming hardware because movies look prettier? Absolute non-sense. UHD would be nice to have, and I wouldn't be shocked to see Pro and/or Slim revisions include it, but its importance was definitely overblown.

Those kind of region specific features didn't do it any favors. It most likely hurt the brand to some extent in Europe. Not to mention, banking on Kinect. Plus, their mindshare had probably diminished due to the lack of (non-Kinect) 1st party releases in the later years of last gen.
