Like, without name brand recognition what is Yahoo even worth?

verizon gets the yahoo brand

they only bought the 'core business' (or whatever the actual terms of sale were), so there's still a lot of stuff outside the core business that needs to belong to some company not called yahoo. now they have a name for that entity

So this is just the name for the holding company (which owns the Alibaba shares). Everything Yahoo related will be given to Verizon.

I hope this means the Yahoo front page is being shut down. They have some shady sources in their feed.

Can someone clarify what Verizon owns and what Altaba owns?

The sale does not include Yahoo’s cash, its shares in Alibaba Group Holdings, its shares in Yahoo Japan, Yahoo’s convertible notes, certain minority investments, and Yahoo’s non-core patents (called the Excalibur portfolio). These assets will continue to be held by Yahoo, which will change its name at closing and become a registered, publicly traded investment company. Yahoo will provide additional information about the investment company at a future date.

Like, I get that the brand is nothing like it used to be in its heyday (over a decade ago), but ditching a proven brand name worth billions is still risky as hell. And yeah it sounds like the name of a disease or some medicine. "YouTube Red" is at least funny-awful, but this is awful-awful.
But what will happen to my spam email account
I too am curious! I still use that for ... uh... stuff!
