Never gonna trust an MS conference again.
Looking back at reactions now is a truly headshaking exercise.
"Mic drop" indeed.
And respectively were 1) shut down and 2) broken for months. That's still a pretty poor showing even if they were officially released.
I think a part of the problem is announcing games multiple year in advance before its even remotely ready. Thats not just MS, but everyone.Yeah but the purpose of the article is to point how, in retrospective, the E3 2014's press conference of Microsoft was a huge joke in our faces.
I guess it just happens. What percentage of the MS Exclusives back in 2014 were cancelled? What percentage of the PS Exclusives in 2014 were cancelled? If it's on par .. whatever. If it's very high on the MS side .. shame on you Phil.
It's terrible, and yeah, MS is not alone in that and probably not the worst offender.I think a part of the problem is announcing games multiple year in advance before its even remotely ready. Thats not just MS, but everyone.
Like Cyberpunk as an example.
2014 was a unique case. They have go from TV,TV,TV to game, game, game in short period.
Must be greenlit a lot projects without taking deep consideration.

That is a very interesting article.Phil Harrison of (then) Microsoft Studios Europe disagreed.
Lionhead was explicitly not allowed to make Fable 4 or something that would evoke Fable 4.

Maybe it's just me but I have no problem announcing projects way out in advance as long as you have something in the mean time.
The movie industry does this all the time and it's not an issue. I know every Marvel movie coming out from now till like 2020 but that doesn't stop me from enjoying what's coming out in 2017.

My reason for disliking announcing games so far in advance is that games are very much moving targets.Maybe it's just me but I have no problem announcing projects way out in advance as long as you have something in the mean time.

MS E3 2017 needs to deliver software wise and deliver hard.
Makes it even sillier to lock it behind win 8Honestly it might have been too ambitious for a 360 anyway.
As far as I know, none of Sony's were canceled. Rather, when was the last time Sony canceled a game that was officially announced? I genuinely can't remember any.

I'm gonna say that movie and games and their production is not the same.
Fury Road was in development hell for many years, with pre-production starting as early as 1997. Attempts were made to shoot the film in 2001 and 2003, but were delayed due to the September 11 attacks and the Iraq War. In 2007, after focusing on Happy Feet, Miller decided to pursue producing the film again. He briefly considered producing it as a computer-animated film but abandoned it in favor of live-action. In 2009, Miller announced that filming would begin in early 2011. Hardy was cast as Max in June 2010, with production planned to begin that November. Principal photography was delayed several more times before beginning in July 2012. The film wrapped in December 2012, although additional footage was shot in November 2013
Nothing you mention matches the question though...Walk away from Rime, What remains of Edith Finch and Wattam.
SSM Stig's project cancelled behind the scene with some layoff.

Movie production can be just as tremulous and game production. Just take Mad Max Fury Road as an example
Not the same thing is it?Walk away from Rime, What remains of Edith Finch and Wattam.

Rime is no longer exclusive. Neither is Edith Finch. Stig's project was never announced (I don't believe).
Projects like Deep Down are still in dev. No Man's Sky was a nightmare and that's the only one I think is comparable.

Honestly thats pretty crazy
Halo Master Chief Collection- released
Fable Legends - Cancelled
Crackdown - in progress
Phantom Dust - converted to an improved port
Project Spark - released and then shut down
Scalebound - Cancelled
two games cancelled, bad but no a disaster
That is a game by Capcom. The closest thing to a cancelation from Sony is Deep Down, wich is AWOL but not officially dead
Phantom Dust was supposed to be a new game, not just a remaster of the original title
So it counts as cancelation, especially because this "change" sunk the studio

Yeah, the worst offender is Square Enix. It's terrible, and yeah, MS is not alone in that and probably not the worst offender.
I'm confused that the ratio of posts in Xbox One announcement threads to posts in Xbox One cancellation threads is so high.
yes but one could argue that game development is more likely to become tremulous than movie production
USGamer said:Especially ahead of the official unveiling and launch of the more powerful Xbox Scorpio in 2017, Microsoft has to convince players that great Xbox-exclusive games are on the horizon. Instead, the highlights are falling off the radar for Microsoft, in a year where Sony is counting on PlayStation 4-exclusives like Persona 5, Horizon: Zero Dawn, NieR: Automata, Yakuza 0, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix, Gravity Rush 2, and Dragon Quest Heroes II.
That was the same year as the Crackdown 3 reveal which has gone dark as well.
Yep. I'm guessing Crackdown 3 will resurface during the Scorpio reveal, as the more powerful hardware will allow them to do the citywide destruction -- locally.
How a game like MCC, a huge entry in a flagship brand for Microsoft gaming, makes it out the door in the condition it was in, blows my mind every time its existence is mentioned. I was overwhelmed with excitement when the collection was announced, because I just knew that friends and family on Xbox would be picking this up ...then those reviews came out.
So 3 major cancellations and 2 major bungles. Meanwhile Sony has actually resurrected things everyone thought were cancelled (The last guardian). Amazing.
But Phil Spencer said he was bringing the "games, games, games"
Wouldn't worry about Below either. I've played it and it is looking amazing (and seemed nearly finished). I'm sure it will be along in good time.I totally forgot about Fable Legends
Man and the still absent Cuphead and Below
