Super Mario Odyssey Announced (Holiday 2017)

I like the city level. It's going to be fun to bounce on every possible thing.

Using Mario acrobatics including the new cap throwing mechanics to scale buildings and jump between skyscrapers is going to be so much fun. Speedruns for this game are going to be insane.

That city level doesn't look like either Soleanna (by way of architecture, the contextualized use of series staples within the environment, and general IQ) or Crisis City (obviously). So even if this comparison is only on the basis of visuals, either all of you are blind or your forgot what Sonic 06 really looked like.

Seriously, this is nothing more than a visceral reaction to "platformer character in a city," in part because dogging on Sonic 06 is still cool even a decade later. Nothing more or less, which is fine(?)- emotions are emotions- but I'm not at liberty to take stock in ill-defined or inaccurate artistic comparisons. Y'all can do better than that.

Come on. It's a distinct, whimsical, colorful, cartoony mascot, right next to bland, generic, and cheap looking humans. I said it before, I'll be there for this day 1, but I cannot see how anyone can objectively dismiss all the visual analogies to Sonic Adventure/06 as without merit.

How many times have Nintendo launched with one must-have system-seller followed by a drought?

After all the shit they've gotten, does it not make sense for these guys to just wait a year and launch with three killer titles ready to go?

Launch with Zelda, Mario and a new MK/Smash Bros and you have an automatic system-seller.

Instead we have a Zelda game that at this point should have just been a Switch-only title from the ground up instead of this long-delayed mess gimped by the need to be compatible with Wii U hardware, a Mario game that's coming almost a year later and a pithy re-release of a years-old Mario Kart game with what are honestly quite lame extras that nobody can honestly qualify a full price for.

Yes, the graphics look great. But what I really like is the inentiveness of it all. Mario in [insert time and place] is something worth exploring.

As bad as the city looks, other locations look great (ignore the compression and size from poor shots). It's not Ratchet and Clank PS4 or anything, but when they have a strong art style they can overcome the limitations.

In some ways it's interesting how levels have fairly different art styles. For the desert and food (?) worlds, you have the city and parts of the forest that look out of a different game.

I still don't know if I think the Zelda trailer or this was better. I think Zelda has a slight edge, but that game is done and Mario isn't. They really added a lot of jovial things to Mario, although he's very bad at them, like listening to people, dancing, etc.

But the game looks AMAZING

I skipped Wii u so I find the games pretty enticing. I'd really appreciate some bayonetta, tho.

Yesterday's presentation has wet my appetite for Odyssey, so you can imagine how painful it is that we won't be hearing much about Mario's latest adventure for some time. :(

I already admitted that people's reaction to this is based only on "cartoon character next to generic humans." However, to base such a visceral negative reaction to the city, or even the entire game, based on that broad of a concept is intellectually-lacking. Are the emotions real? I mean, sure, what-the-hell-ever. Reactions are reactions. But I'm not obligated to give those reactions much more credit than that, especially moreso than my own which at least have taken the time to better compare the two ideas and their executions.

I keep laughing so hard at business men in suits walking about in a Mario game.

It's so strange!

I know what you mean. That element (not exactly how they look, but the IDEA of it) reminded me a bit of Mario is Missing where you wander round, and the characters in the town don't even look as if they belong there as they look so different from Mario. Of course that was down to the limitations of the NES/SNES back then more than anything else, but still.

In recent years there have been tropes where characters enter the "real" world, there was Ella Enchanted, the Smurfs movies etc, and Wreck it Ralph had the idea of all the game worlds being so different from each other.
I just remembered Pixels too (the Adam Sandler movie), with aliens in the form of the video games.

You are forgetting Splatoon 2, ARMS and Xenoblade 2, all with the potential to be quite big. Wonder why?

Also, E3 may have yet more titles that are slated for 2017. Pokemon anyone?

It's bizarre that they didn't even manage a couple of launch day Wii U ports, which could have been as good as new titles to people who skipped the Wii U. Would it have really taken a world of effort to bundle Smash Bros. for WIi U with its DLC and have it on Switch day one?

I really can't blame third-parties for not porting games when even Nintendo isn't doing it.

I'm super-stoked about the city level now that it's clearly an homage to arcade Donkey Kong. All of the sudden, New Donk City's "retro NYC" look and feel makes perfect sense. We already see climbable girders in one section, and street signs named after Dixie, K. Rool, Rambi and Expresso throughout. Also a sign for Diddy's Mart. I'm loving this, and hoping the big ape himself makes an appearance.

The gameplay looks fun as sin but I was surprised at how generally low-fi the environments and shadows looked.

The shots with broken shadows and such should've been nixed from this trailer.

I sill can't get over New Donk City.

The city is fine, but I don't understand why they populated it with realistic looking people.

I think it was cute. If the entire game was this level, sure, that would be a problem. But guess what? It isn't. Every world clearly has it's own distinctive art style and characteristics and the whimsical nature of that is really exciting to me!

Also literally every 3D Mario title has become an instant classic. Have some faith people!

Outside of the lower resolution, this looked pretty good. This is the first Mario I'm interested in since Mario 64.

I bet a lot of these games will look absolutely beautiful on the handheld screen. It always amazes me how great some 3DS games looked at 800x240

anyone else think this a nod to the neverending story?

(the part of the book after Bastian goes to fantasia, aka, not the first film)

this is exactly who I picture graograman the Lion with bastian at night jumping on multicolor dunes (obviously without the multicolor thing in the Mario game)

Me too. I'm in love with everything and how expressive Mario is.

Absolutely, he looks fantastic. The colour palettes and movement and zaniness speak to Galaxy in a more open format and that's just.. mind melting. Really screams playground.

Not for the first time, but, I think Nintendo may have hit platformer gold again.

I've explored a whole bunch of cities, and exploring one as Mario just doesn't seem interesting. The forest level also looks like it's missing anything I want to see in a Mario game. The settings also reveal how behind the system is graphically.

Some of the other levels look great though.

I hate how this game looks, it's totally inconsistent and lacks the polish that the galaxy and wiiU 3d mario games had. It looks rushed.

And it's not just about the city level, is about the whole thing in general, each level seems like it was made by a different studio.

Really really bummed about this. Hope they can somehow convince me with great gameplay but unless they reduce the price of the switch seems like i won't be able to tell.

I feel the same way. I'm buying it because I know the game will be good, but I've watched the trailer three times trying to see what people like about it, and it just looks jarring and inconsistent. I really hate it. I loved the look of Mario 3D World, and this is just amateur looking by comparison.

I really like the scale of the forest part, and with it being so dark it gives a feeling of a kind of stark loneliness that's going to be interesting to pare against Mario and the context of the rest of the game. Also, there's a part where Mario grabs onto a growing vine and rides up past the canopy, and I'm curious as to what that'll lead to-- tree-top hopping? Tree houses in the canopy a la Donkey Kong? A cloud/sky area? I'm curious.

Honestly, it's these new areas that have me the most intrigued. We've seen food world in Mario before. We've all seen desert world in Mario before. We've all seen ice world in Mario before. They're old hat(ayy). Putting Mario a bit out of his element with these more atmospheric and realistic environments is a breath of fresh air.

I'm not digging Mario's height compared to the adults in the city. I think the adults should be around the same height as Mario. Or just take them out of the city altogether. Looks odd. The other stuff looks good.

I think that's very intended.

You travel from an abstract world made of food to a semi-realistic metropolis, and that's incredibly fascinating in my eyes. Notice how gray and boring the humans look, like a parody of the real world.

Remains of the Super Mario 3D World engine. The shadows were always elongated when Mario is on a wall or edge. Weird artifact. Strange they haven't fixed it yet.

But then that would remove the fun of the level.

What are the chances you fight Donkey Kong in New Donk City?

Pretty slim, considering we've seen what looks to be the boss and it's a giant robotic caterpillar.

edit: unless like Mario 64 and Sunshine they go back to multiple objectives in one level, then I suppose there could be multiple boss fights too.

I'm worried about the number of levels. Mario 64 had 15 but Sunshine only had, what, eight? I hope we get at least 10, but I want as many as possible ;__;

And the worst part is that i had this feeling even before mario appeared in that trailer. I was watching at that city and thinking to myself "holy crap, that looks horrible, what shitty game are they going to show now... maybe it's a ubisoft rabids game..."

And then Mario jumps with that horrrrible lens flare effect... what is this? PS1 era?

And then i saw the people walking and images of Sonic 2006 came rushing into my head... and then all these other levels that were all so random...

Terrible.
